Hooliganwatch™: Baseball Bats, Knives, Chainsaws and Cell Phones
It was a rather slow news week in the Hooliganwatch™ central offices, but that doesn’t mean the bad guys aren’t out there making their World Cup plans. As this article points out, the Germans are taking the threat very seriously with more than 250,000 police on duty during the tournament. Their concern: “Hooliganism is becoming international — the men, equipped with baseball bats, knives and even chain saws, meet up on a short-term basis via a cell phone short message. And the Eastern European hooligan scene appears to be more ruthless and better prepared than any other, because it has not been met appropriately.”
The article also mentions that there might be as many as 20,000 hooligans in Poland alone and that there will be many Poles traveling to Germany because their country does not have television rights to broadcast the games.
Anyone care to explain why the games aren’t being shown in Poland? I might resort to violence too if I couldn’t watch the World Cup.

Chainsaws! I nearly spilled my coffee into my laptop when I read that. How intense to you have to be to drag that thing around. I’ve worked plenty with them and they would not be my weapon of choice, unless I was going to cut down telephone poles during the melee. Not only do they want a massacre they want to leave a bloody scene. Will they be carrying their own fuel to refill them and chain adjusting tools. Sweet Jesus, how hard is it to spot a hooligan- look for the guy carrying a chainsaw to the game. I read the blog right, and them I look up at the top of it and there’s an ad for Husqvarna chainsaws, with free shipping! I need a reality check. Poland doesn’t want to shell out for the television rights. Man get out of the way of those Poles and don’t offer them any Budweiser to try to appease them either.

Ya know Godwins law? I can’t wait until the british press will call the german police methods SS-like…

In the article it says the Brits are sending 50 uniformed police. 50 That is some cost-effective crowd control. Is London suffering a crime wave and that’s all they can allocate. It’s just getting crazier and crazier on this planet. I’m thinking of hanging out with the Hari Krishnas for awhile, at least no chainsaws.

Unless they make plastic chainsaws these days, I imagine the stadiums will have metal detectors. Does not stop the violence outside the games, I guess.
Why can’t ze Germans create a hooligan world cup, where dickheads from around the world can get together and beat the tar out of each other in the name of national pride. There could be a big enclosed area outside the city where the game is being played where hooligans from the respective countries are kept apart (but only just) and they can watch the game on the big screen. Then after the game they’re unleashed on each other and they can maim and kill to their hearts’ content. No hospital care will be offered and FIFA will not sanction the meetings so no participants will be capped for their country. By the process of attrition, but the end of the world cup, there may be no hooligans left.
An elegant solution where everybody wins.

hey, i think that this world cup will be extra violent. I am excited to see what happens, although i doubt any hooligans will be bringing chainsaws, that ridiculous, the most outrageous thing confiscated (in europe excluding s america of course) was an axe in greece. Anyway forza italia and i hope everyone beats the crap outta each other

I don’t think anyone would really be so crazy to bring a chainsaw to the World Cup. in the case of the fight mentioned in the article someone probably had one with them by coincidence. But it makes for a funny image. I reread the blog a couple of times and laughed myself silly. I wouldn’t doubt FIFA bans all woodworking tools, gardening implements and cooking utensils from all games.
