Group G: Google’s Fallible Predictions

By: WC Bob | April 24th, 2006 | 5 Comments »

Crystal BallOver the course of the past few months, World Cup Blog has offered its infallible predictions for each of the World Cup groups. We are so confident of the infallibility of our selections that we are willing to match wits with the smartest kids on the block: Google. Google Fight is a site that allows you to enter any two terms and the Google gurus tell you who would win in a fight. Today we played out this battle with the Group G to see how our predictions compare to Google’s. Will World Cup Blog reign supreme in this clash of Internet titans?

France vs. Switzerland, June 13, Stuttgart
Google winner: France
WCB winner: France

South Korea vs. Togo, June 13, Frankfurt
Google winner: South Korea
WCB winner: South Korea

France vs. South Korea
, June 18, Leipzig
Google winner: France
WCB winner: France

Switzerland vs. Togo, June 19, Dortmund
Google winner: Switzerland
WCB winner: Switzerland

France vs. Togo
, June 23, Cologne
Google winner: France
WCB winner: France

Switzerland vs. South Korea, June 23, Hanover
Google winner: Switzerland
WCB winner: South Korea

Group winner

Google: France, 9pts
WCB: France, 9pts

Group runner up

Google: Switzerland, 6pts
WCB: South Korea, 6pts

Conclusion: We both agree that France is the clear favorite and that the money game in this group is South Korea versus Switzerland. Google is perhaps swayed by the Swiss effort to lure women to their country. We are not impressed with the Swiss beefcakes and are going with the Red Devils to advance.

You’re fairly stubborn with your SK prediction, aren’t you?

I think a lot of people will be very disappointed after the Korean Team’s matches this year.

My predictions:

France vs. Switzerland, June 13, Stuttgart
We drew them twice in the qualification. We played them at the EC. Both teams know eachother very well by now. It will be another draw. 1-1

South Korea vs. Togo, June 13, Frankfurt
After the disappointing AC, Togo doesn’t have much credit with the ‘experts’ anymore. I think SK will underestimate them as well: 0-2 for Togo!

France vs. South Korea, June 18, Leipzig
After the disappointment against Togo, the Koreans will do better. But France will outclass them in the last minute: 2-1 for France.

Switzerland vs. Togo, June 19, Dortmund
High on sunshine after the Korea game, Togo comes out all offensive and is dealt three counter attack blows. 3-1 for Switzerland.

France vs. Togo, June 23, Cologne
After the lesson against Switzerland, Togo is more careful this time around and holds France to a 1-1 draw.

Switzerland vs. South Korea, June 23, Hanover
The standings before the game leave a demoralised Korea and a very defensive Switzerland. Classic 0-0 draw.

France 5
Switzerland 5
Togo 4
Korea 1

If you’re only going to watch from this group, then the one to watch will be on June 18 - France v South Korea.

This is the match that the South Koreans must get at least a draw from. By drawing with France, they put themselves in the driver’s seat for their last match against Switzerland.

In the June 23 match, I see Switzerland fighting hard to get all three points to advance, but who can they really count on to score? Frei, maybe, if he’s recovered from groin surgery or he’ not on a red card somewhere. Plus, no Lonfat.

France - 1st
South Korea - 2nd

1. South Korea with 7 points
2. France with 5 points
3. Swiss with 4 points
4. Togo with 0 point

South Korea already beat Togo. And just tied with France. Leaving France with two points. Swiss currently has 1, and will probably score a victory over Togo. Korea will probably beat Swiss. And France will beat Togo.

Current Scores
1. South Korea 4 points
2. France 2 points
3. Swiss 1 point
4. Togo 0 point
