Cinco de Mayo Friendly: Mexico vs. Venezuela

It is a good day to be in Mexico. Not only do you get to celebrate kicking French butt back in 1862, but you also get to watch El Tri play a friendly against Venezuela this evening. The game is being played at the Rose Bowl in California and surely will have a festive atmosphere. There might not be much of a party on the pitch, however, as Mexico coach Ricardo Lavolpe will use the game to help decide which players he is taking to Germany and which ones will spend a long, hot summer at home in Mexico.

One Mexico player who has been attracting a lot of attention of late is Andres Guardado, a 19-year-old midfielder who plays for Mexican club Atlas.

“He’s got the dynamism you’d expect of a 19-year-old kid,” Lavolpe said. “He shuttles back and forth. He doesn’t know what fear is, either. We thought he might be nervous and overawed about playing for his country, but he’s shown real character and steel.”

I haven’t tracked down an online stream for this game but there might be one here. The game is on television on Telemundo for those in North America with kickoff at 11:00 pm east coast time. There won’t be a LiveBlog, but our bloggers on the Mexico blog will surely have some great analysis of the match this weekend.

Happy Cinco de Mayo to one and all.

Friendlies on tap for next week:

9 May – Japan vs. Bulgaria
11 May – Belgium vs. Saudi Arabia; Trindad and Tobago vs. Peru
12 May – Mexico vs. Congo

A somewhat complete list of friendlies before the World Cup

In honor of this game and kicking French arse…I will be munching on Fajitas and pulling back a few Dos Eqis. Arriba!

It’s so frustrating that TV Azteca broadcast all the Mexico games on the channel that they don’t stream!

Just a comment, on the 12th of May, Mexico is playing vs “Congo DR”, which according to EA’s 2006 FIFA World Cup (TM), is a different country than “Congo” :). I thought it quite neat of the game giving all these facts about every country you play.
