Would you want to coach England?

By: WC Bob | April 27th, 2006 | 12 Comments »

We’re exhausted. Ever since Sven’s Sheikh scandal rocked the world a couple of months ago, the intense speculation about who would succeed him as England’s coach has been nothing short of tiring. Our certified Sven expert Shawn over on the England blog has been courageously reporting every detail and every rumor. It has been a full time job. For today at least it appears that the madness has come to an end. The reports say that after he leads Portugal at the World Cup, Luiz Felipe Scolari is going to become the next Sven.

A quick scan of the headlines will tell you that everyone but the Queen Mum has an opinion about this choice. We do too. Scolari is a proven winner as a coach and England could have done worse.

For us, the more interesting topic is whether the England position is really all that desirable? Sure it pays well and sure it is high profile, but do you really think that Scolari is going to have a lot of fun coaching the Three Lions?

If ever there were a position that sets it self up for failure it is that of the England manager. With endless media scrutiny and public expectations that are off the charts, there can only really be two outcomes: hero or failure. More times than not the result has been failure.

What do you think about Scolari going to England? Would this be a position you’d want if you were a coach?

The FA put Scolari in a very difficult position. He wishes to go once he desire’s a new challange and the British team has potencial to win tournaments if coached well. However this pression to decide before the WC doesn’t do any good. He can’t accept the job right now but he is not willing to jeoperdize the negotiation, so he’s not sure about what to do.

The Brazilian newspaper says that they hasn’t agreed on the salaries yet, once Scolari doesn’t want to be paid less then Sven while the Portuguese Press says that he didn’t attempt the meeting but sent his manager, Gilmar Veloz to do it.

Would possibly one of the most challenging things ever. But yet again, as a German, I wouldn’t have a free minute without that yellow press…

I wouldn’t mind the rumored £3 million a year salary, but no way could I put up with the tabloid media.

I hope Big Phil doesn’t have any skeletons in the closet or they’ll be front page news the day after the first disappointing result.

While Senna and Mansell were around in F1, in one english race in Silverstone, there was a huge board saying: “Senna may have God but Mansell has the bolls”.

And if there’s something Scolari has, it’s balls. PLUS a big brain… I couldn’t imagine him being scared by the english media. They are used to Beckham’s and co… Look at Mourinho :-) He has them right where he wants them.

One must realize, there is no bad publicity for public figures. Especially while they are winning. When Mourinho starts loosing, or Scolari, the media will drop them and forget them.

Scolari is an excellent coach, gained a lot of visibility in the world scene after 2002, gained a lot of prestige in the euroepean scene after 2004. Here are the results… Now is the time to pick them.

Is it good to be the english coach…? C’mon, Sven makes what, 7 millions, right…? I guess it speaks for itself.

As a deal, it’s a win-win situtation for any coach. They make a lot of money, they know they are hired to be the future’s scape-goats and not actually the coach, it’s a prestigious team with a lot of potential, usually they have the raw-material to be there, so…?

Anyone would say, “why not”?

Media, and etc… For what I have seen, Scolari will be there until he wants. And while he is there, he will do his best and he will keep his word, PLUS he will be making something like those 7 millions… What in god’s name does the man need to prove? Nobody can make him dance with this line…

[...] As we wrote yesterday, the England job kinda sucks and Scolari found that out the hard way: “I don’t want anything more to do with this England matter because in the space of two days … my life was invaded, my privacy was disrupted,” he admitted. “Today there are still 20 reporters outside my home.” [...]

[...] We’re starting to think that Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari reads World Cup Blog. First he changed his mind about the England coaching gig just hours after we explained why that jobs sucks. Now he has gone ahead and answered one of our Big Questions. In an interview with Kicker magazine, Big Phil offers his thoughts about how many goals will be scored at this year’s World Cup. [...]

Indeed… Sir Alex Fergusson is one of the most charismatic and good coaches still around. How come nobody thinks of him, in that side of the cannal?

the closest person they can have to a coach is alan shearer. if germany can go for jurgen klinnsman, holland for van basten, surely england can go for alan shearer. i loved the way he captained the team at the 98 world cup with england down to 10 men against argentina, surely he is a leader and also, well-respected.
