Big Question: Who’s Going to Win Group B?

We’ve presented you with our infallible predictions and we’ve showed you how they compare to Google’s selections. Now it is time for you to be the smartypants and to tell us how you think things will play out in each of the groups. Today you get to predict the outcome for Group B, a collection of teams that includes the candy canes from Paraguay, the lions of England, the Soca Warriors from Trindad and Tobago, and the 23 men from Sweden.

This is our predicted order of finish:

1. Sweden
2. England
3. Paraguay
4. Trinidad and Tobago

Agree or disagree, let us know your predictions.

  • fernando

Are you sure Sweden can beat England? I think, England would be the best in the group and (surprise!) Trinidad and Tobago gets the third place: http://fo.reca.st/wm.php?u=gogi

  • Luis Carlos

Well with Rooney and Owen injured I’ll have to go like Bob:

    1. Sweden
    2. England
    3. Paraguay
    4. Trinidad and Tobago

Paraguay has nice players in the Mexican league and most of them are in their prime, but they don’t seem to fit well in the National team.

  • http://www.worldcup2006news.net/ Knut Karnapp

I still think England is gonna make it. Therefore I would change Sweden and England. Btw. I´m going to watch Sweden vs. Paraguay in Berlin on June 15th. So Group B is very interesting for me ;)

  • kaiserace

I’m surprised so many people underestimate Paraguay. After England, they are definitely the most skilled club. Therefore my predictions are:

    1. England
    2. Paraguay
    3. Sweden
    4. Trinidad and Tobago

Watch out for Santa Cruz and Valdez!

  • http://shinymedia.blogs.com/whoateallthebratwurst/ OJ

    Paul Robinson
    John Terry
    Ashley Cole
    Gary Neville
    Rio Ferdinand
    Michael Carrick
    Steven Gerrard
    Joe Cole
    David Beckham
    Frank Lampard
    Michael Owen

Do me a favour! Even without Rooney, only two Swedes (Ibrahimovic and keeper Isaksson) might break into England’s probable first XI.

    England will win the group.

  • Irfan

    I guess it’s gonna be
    1. Sweden
    2. England
    3. Paraguay
    4. Trinidad and Tobago

And I think the top 2 teams are gonna be separated by the goal difference in the end.

  • Half_n_Half

OJ … its not a team of stars that wins matches, rather a star team which Sweden most certainly is! Sweden v England will end a draw but the group will finish as our worldcupblog has predicted.

  • DT

It’s a walk in the park for England. Not because they’re good, but because this is the weakest group.

England will end up on top with 7 points. Sweden will be second with 5 points.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-which-current-coach-was-the-best-player.html#comments Pedro P

If SWE is more consistant than ENG, if it’s a walk in the park for ENG and if SWE will draw against ENG, how come it’ll be 7-5…?

I think chances are SWE will top the group, conceiding at the very most a draw agaiunst ENG. Don’t know enough about Paraguay and T&T, but I think the easiest of groups, on paper, is group H…

  • http://hotmail stuart wands

i think england will beat brazil with best goalie since 1966 and england to come first in group stages

  • http://shinymedia.blogs.com/whoateallthebratwurst/ OJ

Half n half, I totally agree that stars don’t make a team, but England is not packed with primadonnas, just very good players. As an overly optimistic Pom, I have to back them to win a fairly comfortable group. Cheers, OJ

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

    1. England
    2. Sweden
    3. Paraguay
    4. T&T

  • http://hotmail stuart wands

england will top group b with 9points and sweden will be 3rd with 3 points trinidad will sneak into wsecond place with 6 points and we will when world cup with p robinson and a strike force of m owen and p crouch

  • http://hotmail stuart wands

england are tops on win ing world cup copme on englan we all know paul robinson gcan save penalties and can’t save penalities but he want make any penalty mistakes in the final we will beat brazil

  • http://www.wretch.cc/blog/kilkenny Ximasa

as a Sweden team supporter, they
are not in good shape, but still
can run that unbeaten record(England didnt win since 1968)

a draw with Sweden might cost England’s champion…

  • Chris

Think England and Sweden will go through, but a few Swedes and English will not be without an hour or two of worry even though this is by far the easiest group.

Do you think England hired the same guy that got them the Olympics to get them this draw?.

  • mightie

    1st of all its not an easy group & i’ll tip paraguay to finish 2nd. paraguayans know wat is it like playing soccer powerhouses (arg & bra in qualifiers,copa america) so playin england & sweden wont b something new or complicated task, they surely know how to deal with them. since the last two world cups they have a good record at group stages but things can b different this time without the legendary chilavert. i prefer star teams like eng, swe to advance but i think the final standings will b;
    1)eng 2)par 3)swe 4)T&T

with teams like eng, swe, par cant even predict 3rd slot for T&T but lets not forget underdogs hav won championships “GREECE” :D.

  • matt

I think that sweden or england will be on top of the group but paraguay has a very good chance. Not too sure how T&T can make it through the next round but who knows!

  • Cajun Nick

    No Rooney. ‘nough said.

Seriously, who’s going to pair with Michael Owen – Peter Crouch? the young (and fabulously unexperienced) Theo?

Really, Sven, what were you thinking? If Rooney’s a bust, then you’ve got to have some striking power. You admit that you haven’t even see Theo play. Maybe Arsene really is running things at the FA.

And, in taking the kid, you’ve left Darren Bent at home. You know, Darren Bent, the best English striker in the EPL.

Meanwhile, Sweden is quietly putting together a very, very solid team. OJ, there is much to be said for the talent of individual players; however, team strength is more than just the collective strength of individuals.

Let’s not forget that Sweden pipped England in 2002, having scored more goals than England, to win the group.

Plus, Sweden won its group in Euro 2004 (which included Italy), scoring 8 goals.

This year, they’re pairing Ibrahimovich and Larsson. How many times will we see Larsson’s tongue?

    Sweden – 1st
    England – 2nd

  • Chris

England and Sweden to draw their game, England to top the group on goal difference.

  • DT

Paraguay 2006 is just not as good as Paraguay 1998 or 2002. They will get a low scoring (0-0 or 1-1) draw against Sweden and they’ll lose to England by one goal margin (0-1).

The Sweden vs England game will end up 1-1 or 0-0 (again, low scoring draw here).

Cajun Nick, Sweden did win their groups in WC 2002 and Euro 2004 by drawing 2 games and winning 1. I believe they’ll end up with 5 points (again), which will be enough for them to go through, but not as a group winner though. Not this time.

Regarding Trinidad Tobago, I don’t think the 4th best Concacaf team deserve to be in the World Cup.

Pedro P, group H is tougher than this group, but I won’t go into details now.

  • USA

    1. Sweden
    2. England
    3. Paraguay
    4. T&T

England has a good team even without Rooney, but Sweden really impressed me in the last few matches I’ve seen them play.

  • http://portugal.worldcupblog.org Luis Paulo

I don’t know. Sweden isn’t the same anymore but England lost their strikers. So Paraguay hava a little chance here.

  • http://footiegirl.blogspot.com Jen

England will draw with Sweden but still top the group.

    1. England
    2. Sweden
    3. Paraguay
    4. TnT

  • David

I really think england will take the group and bet sweden 1-0!

    1. England
    2. Sweden
    3. Paraguay
    4. TnT

  • Wil

In my opinion, England is going to win this group. Sweden and Paraguay are good teams and they have to fight for the second place. I find a little advantage for Sweden but you never know about Paraguayans. Trinidad and Tobago is the weakest team here.

    1.- England.
    2.- Sweden.
    3.- Paraguay.
    4.- Trinidad and Tobago.

  • http://www.bensefels.de Bense

    1. Sweden
    2. Paraguay
    3. England
    4. T&T

Because I want it to be that way ;-)

  • Cajun Nick

I alluded to this earlier, but let me expand my thoughts a little bit more:

I do believe that England have the most individually talented players in the group. However, those individual players have to combine their talents in such a way so that their collective ability is at least as good, if not better.

This is where I think that Sweden have the edge.

Given some of the decisions regarding the team selection that Sven made, I think that the mindset on the England team will be a little off. Surely, Sven has lost the boys a little bit.

I know, I know – These guys are professionals. They’re going to give 100%. We can’t, however, discount the annoyance that some of the England players will have at knowing that the best selections weren’t made.

This is not the time to sow any seeds of doubt in the squad, which is what Sven has done.

  • oakenfold_digweed_sasha_dyk

    1-England
    2-Sweden
    3-Paraguay
    4-T&T

    Owen\Lampard

  • Nick

I hope that we have a bit of a surprise and T&T dont finish bottom. England will win the group though.

  • http://paraguay.worldcupblog.org Daniel

Paraguay of 2006 is not the same as the Paraguay of 2002 (Because we will have a goalkeeper that is not out of shape like Chilavert in that WC) and is not the same team of 1998 (Now we actually have forwards ;-))

I am not surprise that the people understimate Paraguay, I think that is even better because you take off all the presure from the team, let us see how well play the spice boys with the presure of being one of the favorites to the championship, remember Argentina 2002, there believe that they were the Champions even before the tournament begun.

What I am saying is that now we have a team that actually is capable of scoring with the same strong defense…

    My prediction:

    1. Sweden
    2. Paraguay
    3. England
    4. T&T

  • http://paraguay.worldcupblog.org Daniel

and come on people… where is that spirit of cheering for the underdog… :-o

  • Bounty

Ingland will have a problem. Thaey are not gonna win against Paraguay, and Paraguay and england will win against T&T. so at the end they are gonna have same points and the goal difference is gonna tell who goes second PARAGUAY OR ENGLAND ????
    I go
    Sweeden
    Paraguay
    England
    T&T

  • http://www.thesportingrogue.com/blog J. Michael

Yeah, I’ll have to go with with WCB on this one:

    Sweden 3 wins
    England 1-1-1
    Paraguay 1-1-1
    T & T 3 losses

England are unfortunately in disarray, but I think they will squeeze by to the next round.

  • Zoki

    1.England
    2.Paraguay
3.Sweden-we(CROATIA) beat them two times in qualifications. They are weak.
    4.Trinidad and Tobago

  • Loki

England and Sweden make it out of group although place is tough to determine.

  • max the man

This is a though one, but I think the three teams that’ll have a chance of qualifying from the groups are Sweden, England and Paraguay. I think it’s stupid to underestimate Paraguay ’cause they’ve really shown that they are football professionals with a good team spirit. I don’t know who will come on which place but as a Swede I of course hope that Sweden will win and I do think we have a chance. As Zlatan Ibrahimovic said: ‘Course everyone should go to the championships with the mentality of “we can go all the way”.

  • http://cooper14.piczo.com ol-meister

“come on people” lets be straight now do you really think englands gonna lose the world cup if you do think that i would advise you to go book an appointment with the doctor…

    !!!COME ON ENGLAND!!!

  • soccer junkie

man wat yall thinkin england and sweden will be the top 2 teams we all kno sweden got more pptential to make it then paraguay is agree or not i think its gonna be England,Sweden, paraguay, and then TNT go team i want sweden to beat the pants off of paraguay lol do ur thang sweden woof woof…..lol

  • Nadine

I am still hopeful that Trinidad & Tobago will advance. If they can win 2-0 to Paraguay they will most likely do it. I know it’s a long shot but here are my picks

    1. England
    2. Trinidad
    3. Sweden
    4. Paraguay

  • Kat

    well the current standings are:
    1. England (2 wins)
    2. Sweden (1 win, 1 draw)
    3. Trinidad & Tobago (Soca Warriors) (1 draw 1 loss)
    4. Paraguay (2 losses)

They say that if T&T beat Paraguay (by atleast 2 goals) in d last match & if England beat Sweden it could look something like this:

    1. England (3 wins)
    2. Trinidad & Tobago (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss)
    3. Sweden (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss)
    4. Paraguay (3 losses)
