Dangerous Goalkeeper Housewives

Just when you thought it was safe to forget about Jurgen Klinsmann’s decision to choose Jens Lehmann as Germany’s number one keeper instead of Oliver Kahn, along comes former German goalkeeper coach Sepp Maier to keep the drama alive. Maier says that Lehmann wasn’t named number one because of his talent, but rather because of his wife’s friendship with the wives of Klinsmann and team general manager Oliver Bierhoff. In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Maier has this juicy, gossipy quote:

“Bierhoff’s wife and Klinsmann’s wife are the best of friends, and Bierhoff’s wife is also a close friend of Lehmann’s wife.

“Bierhoff and the others all have the same manager, which makes them all intertwined.

“The DFB (German Football Association) just watches it all and that really annoys me.”

Bierhoff is none too pleased with this suggestion and denies that it is true. It also worth noting that Maier was relieved of his duties as goalkeeper coach back in 2004 when his outspoken support for Kahn got him into hot water with Klinsmann.

Not that we are in the business of starting rumors or anything, but we do wonder if Maier’s support for Kahn has anything to do with the friendship between their two wives. Hmmm…didn’t we see them together at Starbucks last week?

Or perhaps Maier is just sympathetic to scary looking robots…
