Totti has better things to do than play for Italy

By: WC Bob | February 9th, 2007 | No Comments »

Francesco Totti must be living a full and fulfilling life. The Italian striker says that he is quite content to not play for the Azzurri. “I’ve got better things to do at the moment,” he was quoted as saying by Italian news agency ANSA on Friday.

I can hardly blame the guy. He won a World Cup last summer and he already plays more than enough games in Serie A. Pundits and old time footballers always like to talk about the honor of playing for one’s country and how disappointing it is when modern players decline to play for their national teams.

It is true that there is great honor in representing one’s nation, but given the crazy schedule that modern players face I can hardly blame them for not being too excited to face San Marino in Euro qualifying or to play in any number of countless friendlies. Totti served his country this past summer and if he wants to stay home with the Mrs. than so be it. I think Italy will be able to scrap up another capable striker from its ranks.
