The World Cup Magic Spray
After two weeks of World Cup football it has become a familiar scene. A player hits the turf and is rolling around in a pain that would lead one to believe that he is seconds away from death. The trainers run out on the field with coolers in hand and stretchers right behind. Then, like a beacon on a hill, a magic bottle and/or sponge emerge and within seconds the player has emerged from the grave to live to see another day. You might be wondering what exactly is that magic potion and where can you get some? Slate has the cut and dry lowdown on the healing powers of the magic spray.

I think it’s time for FIFA to review tapes of the games and to hand out yellow cards based on the video evidence. I don’t mean for this to be done during the game but afterward. FIFA officials should be handing out the yellow card awards for the best dives. We can’t expect the referees to catch all the actors.

My family and I are part of the ESPN-less poor. As a result, we have seen almost every game on Univision (in Spanish). We just add our own commentary and have had a running joke about the restorative powers of “magic spray”. Nice to know that someone else has shared our observations.
