La Liga To Become NFL?

By: Daryl | July 21st, 2006 | 8 Comments »

Spanish football’s governing bodies have signed an agreement that could create American style “franchises” in La Liga.

Clubs could technically sell their name and their rights to other clubs, and possibly change location without affecting their league status.

Not sure what to say, except… “Go Atlético Barcelona!”

Okay, I love the NFL. But I love it because of the sport.

Being from Louisiana, I can tell you that the business aspect is terrible for fans. It seems that every week, Tom Benson is threatening to move the New Orleans Saints to some other location … unless he gets a new stadium; bigger luxury boxes; higher ticket prices.

It’s like a hostage situation.

I don’t wish that on any other sport, not even hockey.

I think it’s a pretty good idea.

An NFL style system of franchises would work well. It works well here in the U.S. and would bring in lots of revenue to the clubs.

Hey Nick, we went thorugh the same thing here in Los Angeles with Al Davis and the Raiders. I say good riddance. Spain will find it’s clubs are run by a bunch of rich pimps like Al Davis and Tom Benson. Who cares about Materazzi anymore? He is just another dirty player who got what he deserved. Unfortunately he didn’t get his punishment on the field via a red card.

Claude,

Look out! Benson really wants to end up in L.A. (as opposed to my LA).

combine NFL style corporatism with the global nature of football … we could be seeing Real Madrid based in San Diego playing Liverpool of Bangkok playing Chelsea based in Moscow …

*shudders*

THis is horrible and will destroy the beauty of the Euro/World style of sport and turn it all into an American version that will screw the fans… You can say bye to relegtion/promotion and say hello to closed leagues and 100$ ticket prices and local TV blackouts…

This paves the way towards a Euro Super League Horrible news for the fans of the game…
