Jumping Rope to watch the Champions League

By: WC Bob | April 26th, 2006 | 12 Comments »

Soccer fans in the United States are fairly used to having their sport play second, third or even fourth fiddle to other sports, but this might be a new low. While the rest of the free and not-so-free world is tuning in for today’s Champions League semifinal between Barcelona and AC Milan, viewers in the US will be treated to the 2005 USA Jump Rope National Championships on ESPN2. While those who are in the know tell us that the 2005 Championships were simply amazing, the bloody thing took place months ago. Frankly, no one cared back then and no one cares now. Fortunately there are Chinese pirates to the rescue. You can watch the game online, learn a a new language in the process and record the jump rope competition so you can watch it instead of Tunisia-Saudi Arabia this summer.

Sweet, that means I can watch the jumprope championships while I Tivo the tiddlywinks semi-finals at the same time. Hopefully for the Champions League final in Paris they’ll instead show the group draw for the World Cup of Whittling. Idiots.

Soooo sad! There must be something wrong in their DNA or something. Here I have 2 ESPN (cable) channels: ESPN Brasil won’t show the game, but ESPN International will show it.

I bet many Brazilians will ‘fall ill’ this afternoon to watch our players performing.

The Band channel (open TV) will also broadcast the game this afternoon, around 15:30h.

When will these idiots realize that more and more imigrants are watching TV and actually WANT to watch soccer, along with us Americans who know football and the game where you actually USE your feet! WTF. What’s next, not showing one of the World Cup games and instead showing some ballroom dancing crap? Oh wait, they probably are are planning that.

Hmm…I’m in the US, and I’ll be watching the game. Setanta Sports USA. It’s also on ESPN Deportes.

ESPN sold the rights for the English-language broadcast to Setanta.

US broadcasters are idiots! I remember MSNBC actually cut away for commercials during an olympic soccer match. And it wasn’t half time. BAHHH, what a joke.

This is why my high school Spanish is so important. I just watch ESPN Deportes and don’t even rely on ESPN to do the right thing.

I would have happily watched it in Spanish (even without understanding it) but ESPN Deportes “>isn’t available everywhere, neither is Setanta TV. Curse you Comcast!

[...] 4:00 p.m. T minus 2 hours and counting. I’m anxious to see how SportsCenter treat the roster announcement. Will it be lavished with attention? Or will it be baseball, baseball, NFL Draft, 2005 Jump Rope Champiosnhip, and in other news Bruce Arena? [...]
