John Terry Named England Captain
The David Beckham era is officially over for England with Chelsea defender John Terry named captain of the Three Lions today. Terry beat out Liverpool’s Stephen Gerrard for the right to wear the armband. Gerrard was named vice-captain, which presumably means he’ll take over if Terry dies or is otherwise indisposed.
Said England boss Steve McClaren: “I’m certain I’ve got the right man in John Terry. I’m convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had. John has all the attributes an international captain needs — leadership, authority, courage, ability, tactical awareness and a total refusal to accept second-best. He has been an inspiration for Chelsea and is at his best in adversity.”
Terry, who didn’t once throw up on the pitch this summer in Germany, will lead England towards its Euro 2008 run which will undoubtedly come to an end with blown penalty kicks.

Not sure if I did it on this forum, but I actually recommended Terry for this job some time ago, despite his occasional dalliances with alcohol. England needs a tough chap in charge on the pitch given all those egos.
