Fabio Cannavaro Tops the FIFA Player of the Year Award Odds

This is just terrible. this guy had a good WC and gets to be the main name in the list for winning this award. What bothers me about fifa is how unfair they are.

There are a gazillion brazilians on this list. WHY IS THAT?????? what has cafu done last year??? what has Roberto Carlos done last year??? what has Ronaldo done last year???? what has ADRIANO done last year besides losing his starting role to JULIO CRUZ??? what has Robinho done last year??? this is just crazy.

What has LAMPARD done last year??? where is MESSI in this list??? where is CRESPO in this list??? where is SEADORF in this list????

FIFA is just as corrupt as the ITALIAN league as far as I see it.

Italy had an easy run in the world cup, one good game and help out for pens in the final. That don’t make their captain the worlds best. Excellent yes but had they lost the shootout he wouldn’t be in the running. Since there’s no outstanding candidate they should give it to Henry, he lost 2 big finals but his own performances have been great as ever.

You guys are so against it? Why? First, he hasnt won it yet (ZZ is also nominated btw). And second, can you really deny his amazing performance throughout the entire tournament.

Well, After the penality shootout between Germany & Argentina one of the Germans called Gabriel Heinze a “dirty Jew” Heinze didnt hear him, but Cufre did and kicked the guy out cold. Then Heinze heard what happend and that whole fight scene broke loose.

FIFA then blocked that video to being aired. And collected all the evidence and it disapeared. They PUNISHED MAXI & CUFRE but non of the GERMANS.

GERMANY should have been disqualified from the tournament. but didnt and FIFA hid all the evidence. THE AFA couldnt sui because they couldnt get the evidence because the video was taken. If you guys watched the video while it happend live. You could see the defender approaching the Argentinians and saying something (which both Cufre and others said, he called them Dirty jew.

I agree. Fifa loves Brazil. Dont take this as an insult or an attack but I’m not 100% certain from your previous message if you knew that Brazil is not located in Europe.

You are right though. Most of the time, the players nominated are from Europe. But soccer has been around in Europe for a much longer time. Look at history. The USA didnt even make the world cup most of the time. That has a huge impact on the game. For now, Europe dominates the sport, but things will change eventually. Rest assured. There are many African countries with talent and some Asian countries that are getting better as well.

I also agree that FIFA is not favourable to Argentina (a team I love, though not as much as Italy).

FIFA loves Brazil. They didnt deserve the fair play award (not after all those goals offside). Shouldve gone to the Ukraine, Czech Repbulic, or even Switzerland or Trinidad&Tobago.

But for this blog, Cannavaro is exemplary and deserves to be there.

I think Cannavaro is an excellent player and imo, he deserves the award this yr.

But i do agree with Fair and others that Fifa has some messed up choices this year…seriously what have players like cafu or ronaldo contributed this year? nothing! Expect that they are Brazilian of course…it’s such an obvious bias. I dont know know too much about Fifa politics, but they do seem to have a particular grudge against certain countries…Argentina being at the top of their “evil” list, lol. go figure. And i know Europe is the primary market for soccer, so i would expect that most players to be nominated would be from Europe, but it would’nt hurt them to include some other players that have impressed in other places around the world…like Tevez in Brazil last year.

It’s good to see Riquelme on the list though! He’s my personal favorite out of everyone on that list..along w/ Zizou of course.

My own opinion on Italy winning the world cup has nothing to do with the game against Australia its YOU presuming because I live in Australia that I must be!! My own opinion on Italy winning is MY opinion and I don’t hate Italy, I admire great football and in My opinion Italy were not the best of the finals. Btw whether you agree or disagree I couldn’t care less because you have your own opinion and I have mine ;)

Mike! You are exactly right! Cannavaro wasnt even looking at Henry!!! Henry ran into him – poor baby (sarcasm).

Hopefully common sense will prevail and Cannavaro will win. It’s not often a defender wins and that might go against him, but it shouldn’t. He had a great year with Juve, played excellent in the champions league and led Italy to their fourth title. Most people would agree he should have taken home the GB from the World Cup but was robbed of it.

Some have complained of a Euro -bias, but I don’t look at it that way. Can anyone argue that the best leagues are in Europe? Tevez is a great player, but he has to play against the best in order to truly gage his (or anyone else) talent.

Cannavaro absolutely diddn’t care about the ball, he always looking Henry, and moved towards him, tried to injure Henry with his elbow. This kind of discreet fault is one of his specialties.

I had two floating ribs broken on the same kind of agression with elbow that you call comical. A story of 2cm and i could have pierced lung. People who never had played football or soccer didn’t really realize which a fault is spectacular but without any danger(zz ’s headbutt) and which could directly lead you at hospital. If you think i lie try it, run near 30 km/h and ask someone to give you an elbow butt to the lung or to the trachea.(a friend went directly at hospital with it). What Cannavaro or Puyol did are discreet but vicious agression. You have no right to play with yours elbows, you know.

I play soccer (believe it or not) and I’ve been elbowed (by accident) tons of times. Cannavara is NOT look there, his eye is on the ball. Get over it! Henry is a good diver and a wimp. He should watch where he is going. He CLEARLY ran into Cannavaro and it wasnt the only time he ran into someone to get a penalty – look at the videos.

To boot, the severity of the headbutt was not only what it could have done but also the crucial moment at which it happened. It was thoughtless and careless and he proved to the whole world that he didnt care about France. Or football. Nothing. Only himself.

I think its stupid you guys can call Henry a cheat or a diver…Cannavaro is one of the best defenders in the world and I agree he is no cheat but uses all he can to affect his opposition – which is within his right. He has every chance of winning WPoY 2006.

On the other hand Thierry henry is one of the best strikers in the world and one of the most honest players around (compared to the likes of totti among others) and its stupid that there is a debate on Henry or Cannavaro. They are both heads and shoulders above most players in terms of honest football.

Henry is also one of the nicest guys to boot, I don;t think there is more then a handful of footballers in the past decade that play football at the highest level as consistent with the same level of skill and flair as henry.

Catherine – the stuff you write just shows how immature and ignorant you are of football. showing the same utube video of the same few tackles over and over again means nothing, i see free kicks and penatlies there that are all worthy and seen less blantant fouls get given. If you want you can find hundreds of videos on utube of any players doing worst…

In my mind, the Italian league does more subtle fouls then either France or England.

But thats beside the point – Henry has always been well respected by footballers and pundits alike, and been top 3 in many awards in the past decade, you just make yourself look stupid saying those things you have about him.

I can’t believe you guys are actually saying this stuff. I totally agree with David and Thierry. Thierry Henry is the greatest striker, if not the greatest player in the World right now. He has a totally unorthodox style of play, for a striker, and this has led him to score some of the most spectacular goals in football, example: Arsenal vs. Manchester United,2001-2002.
And how can you say he was the biggest diver in the World Cup??? Did you not see Cristiano Ronaldo?? Portugal won Most Entertaining Team because of the amount of diving they did. And if you watched Thierry Henry play, you’d see that he doesn’t dive. Against Everton in 2004-2005 he dodged two SLIDING tackles and he still kept going. Thierry Henry is perhaps the most fairplay player in the world! You ought to pay more attention to the way he plays in the EPL and not just the World Cup, he plays different in the National Squad because of Zidane!!
