how many euro countries take the U19’s seriously? The absence of Italy, Germany and England in particular seems striking.

Only eight teams qualified for the final tournament. Italy, Germany and England all failed to make the cut.

Italy fell at the first qualification stage, finishing third behind Ireland and Northen Ireland.

Germany and England both fell at the second qualification stage. Germany finished second in their group behind Spain. England finished third behind Belgium and Serbia & Montenegro.

yeah, based on those results, my guess is that England and Italy didn’t send their strongest teams (probably because the players are committed to clubs already) – of course alternatively they could just be very bad, but Italy lost to Ireland and drew with Nth Ireland both of which went on to come last in their 2nd round groups. In the second round England lost to both S&M and Belgium, only beating Nth Ireland (bit of a grudge match maybe).

Given that most european powers don’t take the Olympics (U23 effectively) seriously, its not so surprising here in the U19s.

I’m surprised Turkey finished last. The team they sent to the World U-17 Championships was really one of the best in the tournament and they should have won it really.
Anyway, this tournament looks like good news for Austria & Scotland. Maybe we’ll get to see some of these players grace Euro 2008. Austria-Scotland for the final anyone?

I see Pete is sleeping through this as the England team did through the World Cup….judging by England’s finish in this competition, they can’t have any decent players coming up…so you can sleep on for many more championships to come. Nitey nite!

Spain already has a young world cup team that could be headed for great things. If these results are a showing of anything to come, then perhaps they’re bad international tournament luck will be at an end.
