Bravo Leo Messi, Bravo
Argentinian dribbling machine Leo Messi has been awarded the brilliantly named Bravo Trophy by Italian sports magazine Guerin Sportivo. It’s basically an Under-21 version of the more famous Ballon d’Or (which will be handed to Kaka in the very near future) but not associated in anyway. It’s somewhat belatedly awarded for performances in the previous season, and since 2006/7 was the year Messi scored that Maradona-esque goal for Barcelona against Getafe, who can argue? Interestingly, Messi is the first winner in five years that wasn’t playing in the Premiership.
I wish more awards were like this to be honest. Rather than imposing an unnecessary level of grandeur on proceedings with a heavy title like FIFA World Player of the Year, the Bravo Trophy sounds more like a pat on the back and a hearty well done for young player who’s fun to watch.
The great thing about Messi is that while he’s as entertaining to watch as 2004 Bravo Trophy winner Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s seems a whole lot more likeable. Despite his talents there’s very little arrogance to the kid, he’s always grinning and never seems to even brush his hair, never mind style it. For all these reasons the Bravo Trophy is perfect for him. To celebrate, here’s another look at his Diego like goal from last season.
