Big Question: Who’s Juve Raid Was Best?

By: Daryl | July 21st, 2006 | 25 Comments »

Real Madrid and Barcelona are always competing, especially when it comes to shopping. So far, they’ve signed two players each in the Juventus fire-sale.

Madrid plucked Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson from the flames for 20 million euros, while Barcelona picked up Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta for roughly the same price.

Two good pieces of business, but who got the best deal?

Yeah, right, everybody should hve the rights to insult anybody else, it’s such a nice thing to do… nothing to do with physical violence, right ? :-/

I hope the Materrazzi incident will be laid to rest soon. It’s never good to see people blaming others for their own inadequacies. France had the better of the game before AND after Zizou was dismissed, but they couldn’t put the ball in the net and their nerve failed in the shoot out.Italy have made the catennaccio form of football into an art, and used this tactic to perfection.

Italy may not have been pretty, but what they did have is defensive organisation, concenteration and resolution. And the winners medal to go with it.

Hey Matt

Physically assaulting someone is AGAINST THE LAW and insulting someone isn’t. Get your head screwed on straight Zidane broke the LAW. If he did this on the street he would have been charged and put in prison.

Back to our regularly scheduled program…

I think that Real got the best deal. Not only because individually, are Real’s new pair better than Barcelona’s pair; but, more importantly, becase they are much more likely to upgrade their new squads.

I’m far from unbiased, but I would say Barca got the better deal. Thuram is old but Barca already has two other great CBs in Puyol and Marquez, at worst he serves as an excellent backup plus he can play RB. Zambrotta is worth more than the other three combined, Cannavaro is one of the worlds best CBs but world class Left and Right backs are much more rare, Zambrotta is possibly the best in the world at both positions. Last season Barcelona’s only real weakness came from a relatively weak defense, now their defensive squad is their deepest.

Okay i didnt come to this blog for this reason but I just had to correct this statement:

“Italy have made the catennaccio form of football into an art, and used this tactic to perfection.
Italy may not have been pretty, but what they did have is defensive organisation, concenteration and resolution. And the winners medal to go with it.”

I’m tired of ppl saying Italy plays a catennaccio game cuz they don’t. They scored 12 goals which is 2nd place to all other world cup teams this year. That’s not a defensive team. It may be cocky to say but Italy played an amazing offensive game and an amazing defensive game. The results speak for themselves.

Now as Cajun said “back to our scheduled programming” :-P I think its a pretty even deal since Cannavaro means so much just on his own but Thuram and Zambrotta are both extremely effective players. I think the edge just might be a BIT more on Barcelona’s side.

adam rupulo u couldnt be more right, and noone seems to regonize all the terrible calls that went aganst italy in the game but nevermind that, if we had roberto boggio noone would evan be saying this crap about italy’s offense. YEs barcel. got the better of the deal but real might get better in the long run with christiano ronaldo maybe van nestel evan kaka might come down to spain

Chris T, the funny thing is we didnt even need Baggio. It would’ve been nice to have Vieri, an amazing soccer player but he was injured. And we all know he works amazingly with Totti, so perhaps Totti wouldnt be so invisible if Vieri was there.

And Nesta was gone of course. People seem to disregard the fact that Italy was missing 2 of their best players for the tournament and yet STILL won. W/e… i’m getting way offtopic.

barca got the better deal i think … i mean zambrotat is like 28 i think and is the best defender in the world when it comes to playing at club, because cannavaro is very vicious wne he played a juve Turam is a good defender but old .. and i think Emerson is the worst player in thje wolrd .. i dont know why they rate him so much when he does nothing at all .. so barca got the better deal

I think Cannavaro is the best defender in the world. Zambrotta is second best to him. But I don’t think emerson is anywhere near Thuram. So maybe Barca got the better deal.

I have a different perspective on the signings.

We have two excellent central defenders (Cannavaro and Thuram), and two great defensive players who are extremely dangerous going forward (Emerson and Zambrotta)

First we compare Cannavaro and Thuram. Both are getting on in age for soccer players (33 and 34 respectively) but they both had excellent performances at the World Cup. Head to head I’d have to give Cannavaro a slight edge, since I think he reads the games slightly better than Thruram. Beyond that, these two battle each other to na standstill.

Emerson and Zambrotta are both better suited, in my opinion as holding midfielders, similar to Claude Makelele. At 30 and 29 years of age, they both still have a few years of great football left. Zambrotta is the better defensive player but Emerson has the offensive edge. Emerson was hurt during the World Cup and many pundits say his presence in the Brazil team would have given them a greater sense of urgency, but like everything else, that’s speculation. I give Zambrotta the slight edge after his impressive World Cup performance, but make no mistake, they are both extremely versatile and impressive players.

The final area would have to be how they will fit into the two teams. This is where Real have the definite edge since they need a strong central defender in Cannavaro and the get the holding midfielder they lacked in Emerson (Real was never the same after Makelele left). I think that it’s going to be interesting to see what Barcelona do. They have great chemistry. Adding these players should help them, but not as much as it will help Real.

Edge: Real Madrid

Cannavaro & zambrotta are great players as shown in the WC. The other 2 are past their best..
It is a great shame that 2 star italian players are playing in spain.

I have to say, based on team needs, Real Madrid gained the most benefit.

A world-class defensive mid and defender were just the ticket for Real.

At the end of the day jon, all john terry’s won is the premiership and english league titles. When Chelsea start to perform against the rest of the world then I’ll tip my hat to them. In my opinion, The england debacle showed that english players are simply not as good as they think they are.

I totally agree with Marco. I have also been wondering why Emerson is rated so high. He is far less effective as Viera.
