Big Question: Should The Match Fixing Scandal Affect Euro 2012?

By: Daryl | July 18th, 2006 | 30 Comments »

There’s some speculation that the matchfixing scandal could cost Italy the chance to host Euro 2012. The decision will be made on December 8th, with competing joint bids from Poland/Ukraine and Hungary/Croatia.

UEFA won’t be keen on accepting Italy’s bid unless the Italian Football Federation cleans house in time for the vote. Former President Franco Carraro resigned after being implicated in the scandal and UEFA’s December deadline may come too soon for the Federation to re-organise.

The “two men shaking hands” logo doesn’t help either.

yeah the logo doesn’t look good does it?!

but either:
a) Italian soccer is still corrupt, in which case they buy off FIFA (well known to be corrupt in any case)
b) Italian soccer is no longer corrupt, in which case FIFA can’t justify taking the tournament off them

so either way Italy will host in 2012 ;-)

I can understand the reaction by a member of UEFA’s Executive Committee, who has said that unless the management committee of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is totally overhauled, Italy cannot be awarded the 16-team tournament. Let’s not forget he is only speaking for himself, not the UEFA Executive Committee.

Last year, in Australia, the Australian football federation was totally overhauled, but not because of corruption. It was the in-fighting between officials – too many Indians wanting to be chief – so the government stepped in, set up an enquiry which eventually gave recommendations to dismantle the football federation and the league of clubs of the time and a temporary board was created of respected businessmen and football heads and a new league was formed. It has been an enormous success culminating in Australia’s successful entry, after 32 years, in the finals, and also into the Asian league.

So, maybe, the Italian Football Federation also needs a complete overhaul, otherwise some stain will hang on and the Italian football administration will continue to have a fishy smell.

To heck with Italia!

Hungary NEEDS this Cup for vital restoration of the local football program and Croatia, with its natural beauty and fantastic athletes deserves it.

Italy has the World Cup trophy, the headlines of sports pages, the Pope and the best food in the world. Give Hungary the tourney, FIFA! We want the true beautiful game in Budapest!

With the fall of the Iron Curtain 16 years ago, it is time to let these new countries host these big sport events. I think Poland/Ukraine or Hungary/Croatia would be a terrific choice. Since the Italien clubs have appealed their demotions and punishment there is a possibility that they could win the appeals. Let Italy show the world that they really cleaned up their mess and that is not something they can accomplish by Dec. 2006.

As a passionate Italian fan, I still think it would be nice to see Hungary/Croatia or Poland/Ukraine hold the world cup. New places are needed :)

But I dont think the scandal should affect the decision too much. If anything its shown that the Italian justice has punished these teams severely becaus ethey’re not gonna take no sh!t. lol. Good luck to whoever; but it might be nice to see someone new.

Hi !

Everyone knows that Italy has best facilities to host euro. But development of other undeveloped football countries is also important in my opinion. For Croatia and Hungary this would be greatest event in decade or more, and it would definitely help to boost economy and open more job positions. Im not saying that with Italy will not be same, but it will occupy everyone in our countries. Remember Athens olympic games, there was great scepticism before games, as so great sporting event was planned in relativly small country, but we all have seen later how great event was organised. So pls give us a chance.

Give it to Poland\Ukraine. Italy will NOT be able to clean up their act 2012, anyway some of the eastern euro countries need to devolp their football too.

HI!
As long as the the teams have been punished there is no need to punish the rest of italy.
Corruption is everywhere in the world, eastern europe, usa, have all worst cases of this.

It is obvious that Italy already has most of the necessary amenities to host such an event (even though their stadiums have not been improved since the WC’90).
Even so it must be time for some changes in the hosting of the WC and EC. It is very hard for one country to host such an event unless its Italy, UK, Germany, France, Spain (the standard hosts) but as we have all seen in recent competitions it is possible to organise a joint event and this enables the “smaller” countries to get involved and improve their infrastructure, stadiums, training failities and interest in the game.
It would be a shame to give Italy EURO 2012 because it would show that UEFA do not think forward but just stick to safe and do not give other countries a chance. In my opinion Croatia / Hungary would be the ideal choice as they are located fairly centrally in Europe (Ukraine seems too far to travel), they have beautiful and historic cities to see while waiting for matches (eg Budapest, Dubrovnik), Hungary were a major force in football in the past and Croatia are currently near the top tier of football in Europe. They have the capacity to hold many visitors / supporters though their developed tourist industries (not quite so in Poland in Ukraine). All in all it would be less risky and easier for Cro/Hun to organise the event than Pol/Ukr.

we truly deseve the cup for more reasons.
first of all croatia and hungary have invested lot of time, effort, optimism and love, i would dare to say, in ther candidature.
furthermore, neither cro or hun have ever hosted such a major event and they (or should i start saying “we”) will be determined to prove we are capable and reliable for such honors. not to mention the special atmosphere cup will get thanx to our enthusiasm of organising such a festival for the first time.
second, as davis said, italy has highly developed sports (and all other kinds of) infrastructure and our countries would greatly benefit from this competition infrastructural wise.
third, i dare to say that our country has, objectively, archived magnificent results in such a short span (nevermind my nationality), and hungary was at the top of the world some fifty years ago, but never has it recieved some recognition for that and now their football is in such sad state. this would be chance for europe to reciognize and help good football.
fourth, this is second croatian and third hungarian candidature, that only proves desire to organise this event. that shozld be noted.
and last but not least, corruption should be punished most harashly and strongy discouraged everywhere. i think scandal of such proportions does put in question

I’m afraid Dominik, that you didn’t see all these polish girls who came to uk. They are gorgeous. The best most beautiful women in the whole world. And as far as I know the girls from ukraine are top models too. Give euro to them

how can you tell me stuff like that..You obviously dont see good…I said that poland or ukranians girls are really beautiful but not more than our…
Also cro/hun are more ready for this tournament than pol/ukr are..
give it to us, everybody is tired of england, italy,or germany, i am too..
who would be favorit in italy,,, italy of course,,, not some germany, england, or spain…. So someone else has more chance to win.. it’s harder to win on some other teritory that has shown germany- they always win ontheir own teritory…

In my opinion Euro 2012 should be organised in Poland and Ukraine, because people all over the world want to see something new. Not only the famous and rich countries. Poland and Ukraine are worth seeing because of their specific culture. I am sure that vievers would be satisfacted.

Euro 2012 for Poland and Ukraine. I think Italy has hosted their share of major events already, and UEFA should expand their horizon and invest in the future. Poland and Ukraine are a much bigger market (80+ million people) which should makes the sponsors eager to invest. Also both Poland and Ukraine love football (from what I read Hungary is not so much into it). I really believe that we will all meat in Poland/Ukraine in 2012 (even I will come from Chicago to be a part of this great event). My second choice is Croatia/Hungary. There is more to Europe than just the West!!!
