A Soccer War Comes to an End
One of the worst chapters in World Cup history has final come to an end. On Tuesday the presidents of Honduras and El Salvador shook hands and ended a border dispute that dates back to the infamous 1969 conflict known as The Soccer War. The conflict was initially triggered by violence that occurred during a series of World Cup qualifying matches between the two countries and eventually evolved into a brief, but bloody war. For those who are interested in history and international affairs, I recommend that you read The Soccer War, by Ryszard Kapuscinski, which offers some interesting insight into the conflict as well as first hand accounts of uprisings from around the world.
