2007 FIFA World Club Championship to Feature Goal-Line Technology

By: WC Bob | November 21st, 2006 | 4 Comments »

After much discussion and hubbub about the need to improve officiating through the use of technology, FIFA Grand Poohba Sepp Blatter announced today that goal-line technology will be used at next year’s World Club Championship. The technology has been tested at youth competitions and Blatter opened up the possibility that it will be in use in other competitions in the future, including the World Cup.

“In 2005 we did different tests at the Under-17 World Cup in Peru but the evidence wasn’t clear so we will continue to carry out trials in junior competitions in 2007,” Blatter told a news conference in Madrid.

“We will then use it at the 2007 World Club Championship and offer its use at other FIFA competitions too.”

I’m all in favor of limited goal-line reviews that don’t disrupt the flow of the game. I just hope that this isn’t the first step towards a wider use of video replays that will determine fouls, cards, etc.

What do you think? Is this good, bad or are you indifferent?

Bob, His Majesty Sepp Blatter, is not calling for video reviews like they have here in the NCAA or NFL. He is talking about technology like the smart chip that lets the referee know if the ball crossed the goal line. There were a couple missed calls in this world cup and it’s time to check out balls that have a smart chip in them and other technology that would improve the accuracy of a referee’s call without delaying the game.

I think technology should be used to idicate off-sides as well, they are very important and tough to call by a human.
