THE BIG PICTURE
Zenadine Zidane is out for this game, having picked up two yellows in the last two matches, but as long as France beats Togo and makes up their goal differential, it will not be the end of Zidane’s career. France moves on over the loser of Switzerland vs. Korea, and can even win the group if the above game draws and France ends with a better goal differential than Switzerland. The Swiss are currently at +2 to France’s 0.

I think even if France win 100-0 and Switzerland ties 2-2 with South Korea, Swiss and S Korea go through.
http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/releases/en/fwc_regulations_2006_090604_en.pdf

Swiss France 0-0
France S Korea 1-1
Assuming S Korea Swiss 2-2

The tie breaker would be:
(i) greater number of points among the 3 in the games involving those 3 – same points.
(ii) goal difference in the games involving these 3 – same GD
(iii) goals scored in the game involving these 3 … S Korea has 3 Swiss has 2 and France has 1
So Swiss and S Korea through.

France can come first in the group if S Korea Swiss ties 0-0 and France beats Togo by a GD of 2.
France will come second, eliminating Swiss if S Korea Swiss ties 1-1 and France beats Togo by a GD of 3

The Group Standings are wrong, Switzerland should be #1 because they have a +2 GD, S.Korea has +1.

France needs to win, and by a good margin if Swiss & Korea tie. Assuming a 0-0 draw, France will need to win by 2. A 1-1 draw and it’ll be 3. I don’t expect more than 2 goals in the game, so it will be tight! I can’t wait!

Vancouver,
Goal difference and Goal scored in that order between/among the sides are the first things that decide a tie-breaker. The goal difference and goal scored within the entire group comes into effect if the first criterion fails to throw up a winner. So if Swiss and Korea tie 2-2, France is out.

Cresp, I don’t understand. If Swiss Korea tie 2-2, Swiss will be 2nd with a +2 GD. So wouldn’t France need to win say 3-0 to give them a +3 GD and then they’re in?
