THE BIG PICTURE
Portugal can stamp its ticket in the round of 16 with a win today. In their opening match, an early goal from Pauleta proved to be enough to beat Angola and to pick up three points. Portugal faces an Iran team that played Mexico to a standstill for the first third of the match before wilting in the German sun. Iran needs a result. Portugal wants to win so it can take it easy against Mexico next match. Group D table

Portugal

Portugal have failed to advance from the opening stage of the World Cup finals for 40 years since reaching the semi-finals in England in their first tournament in 1966. They went out in the first round in 1986 and 2002.

The capital of Portugal was moved to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil (at the time a Portuguese colony) from 1807 to 1821 while Portugal was fighting the Napoleonic wars.

King Ferrand of Portugal was held captive from 1213 to 1226 by the Turks. They demanded ransom, but Portugal’s Queen Jeanne refused to pay for her husband’s return. She had beaten him in a chess game, and he had therefore hit her on the nose with his fist. It upset her considerably.

Iran

Iran have failed on two previous occasions to advance to the next stage: in 1978 and 1998.

Films made by Iranian directors have won more than 300 international awards over the past 25 years.

Azadi stadium in Tehran can seat more than 100,000 people for a football match.

Can’t imagine Iran winning this. Portugal must start firm favourites and should easily qualify for the round of 16.
