THE BIG PICTURE
Just when you thought they couldn’t get any higher the tournament raises the stakes. It’s win or go home for both Germany and Sweden and this will be the final World Cup match for one team until 2010. Germany have that home team advantage (link to bob’s testosterone post) and the tournament’s leading goal scorer in Miroslav Klose. Last time the World Cup was held in Germany, West Germany defeated Sweden on the way to winning it all. Sweden, well, they have a lot of fan support in town and an offense that has been steadily increasing its productivity by one goal a game. Are you going to root root root for the home team or cheer on the underdog?

Teams: Likely formation; shirt numbers, name, caps, goals, coach:

Germany (4-4-2): 1-Jens Lehmann (35-0); 3-Arne Friedrich (39-0), 21-Christoph Metzelder (24-0), 17-Per Mertesacker (26-1), 16-Philipp Lahm (21-2); 19-Bernd Schneider (67-1), 8-Torsten Frings (55-8), 13-Michael Ballack (67-31), 7-Bastian Schweinsteiger (31-7); 20-Lukas Podolski (28-13), 11-Miroslav Klose (58-28) Coach: Juergen Klinsmann

Sweden (4-4-2): 1-Andreas Isaksson (41-0); 3-Olof Mellberg (67-2), 4-Teddy Lucic (84-0), 5-Erik Edman (40-1), 7-Niclas Alexandersson (90-7); 6-Tobias Linderoth (61-1), 9-Fredrik Ljungberg (60-13), 21-Christian Wilhelmsson (32-2), 16-Kim Kallstrom (37-4); 20-Marcus Allback (59-24), 11-Henrik Larsson (92-36) Coach: Lars Lagerback

I always love the underdogs (well, except Brazil). I would love to see a Sweden victory over the German. But I feel that it would be very very difficult for them to beat Germany, a team which has good players at all the three positions on the pitch. And Germany is playing at home, just a huge advantage!!
Hopefully the two teams will play well and in good spirit. and no bad calls from the ref please!!!

I believe Germany will win. Keep the home crowd happy and waiting to see if they will have a re-match against Brazil.

I cross my fingers for Sweden, not because Germany eliminated Poland in group A (it was Polish team fault of course), but simply because in my opinion German team is not in its top form and Sweden should take advantage of it. Go, Sweden !

Hm. That’s gonna be a close one. Germany will certainly not to get scoring goals like they did in the group stages. So far, I’m a little bit disappointed with the Swedes though.
None of them really ‘mean’ anything to me, so I don’t wish for a particular winner, but for a good game.
