THE BIG PICTURE
Germany’s defense was exposed against Costa Rica, which gave up two goals to Paulo Wanchope, but the Poland attack doesn’t look to be too much of a concern after Poland fell to Ecuador 2-0. Two goals by Miroslav Klose on his 28th birthday led the way for Germany. There are no June 14 birthdays on the German side, (back up Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn is closest, born on June 15) but Germany captain Michael Ballack is scheduled to be back from a calf injury that kept him off the field against Costa Rica. Germany has not beaten a European side in a major tournament since 1996, but has not lost to Poland in the 14 matches the two teams have played.

Teams: Likely formation; shirt numbers, name, caps, goals:

Germany (4-4-2): 1-Jens Lehmann (33-0); 3-Arne Friedrich (37-0), 21-Christoph Metzelder (23-0), 17-Per Mertesacker (24-1), 16-Philipp Lahm (19-2); 18-Bernd Schneider (65-1), 8-Torsten Frings (53-8), 13-Michael Ballack (65-31), 7-Bastian Schweinsteiger (29-7); 20-Lukas Podolski (26-12), 11-Miroslav Klose (56-26) Coach: Juergen Klinsmann

Poland (4-5-1 or 4-4-2): 1-Artur Boruc (18-0); 6-Jacek Bak (73-2), 2-Mariusz Jop (13-0), 14-Michal Zewlakow (57-1), 4-Marcin Baszczynski (33-1); 8-Jacek Krzynowek (59-9), 21-Ireneusz Jelen (10-2) or 16-Arkadiusz Radomski (21-0), 10-Miroslaw Szymkowiak (29-3), 7-Radoslaw Sobolewski (20-1), 15-Euzebiusz Smolarek (15-4); 9-Maciej Zurawski (51-15) Coach: Pawel Janas

Dear editor,

I can’t impress my friends with these terribly wrong informations you are posting on this side. First, it is Gesundheit (no “z” – German isn’t that kind of hard pronouncing language you are used to hear from your Second WW anti-German movies on British TV). Second, German students are by far younger when they are getting their first degree (av~26). By the way, the first degree in Germany is equal to a MSc in England, we don’t have BSc yet. Even more important, have a look on this side (http://www.studis-online.de/Studieren/art-299-eurostudent2005.php), find a good translator, and interpret the result. English students seem to be the oldest…

With kind regards and have a nice day,

a reader.

Germany has an impressive team to say the least..,they are the host isn’t it.Their performance is expected.Klinsmann will want their 3pts to go top of group to avoid England if possible, not that they need to fear England but more to preserve their best card for next round.
