Brazil and Argentina to Meet in London Friendly

By: WC Bob | August 2nd, 2006 | 24 Comments »

It was the match that many people wanted to see during the World Cup, but now it will happen a few months late and in London, instead of Germany. Brazil and Argentina are scheduled to play a friendly on September 2 at Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium according to the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The two South American giants were both eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. They last played one another in the final of the Confederations Cup final in Germany last year with Brazil coming out on top 4-1.

Brazil is also scheduled to play Norway in a friendly later this month.

Meanwhile, Brazil defender Roberto Carlos says that he plans on staying at Real Madrid through the end of his contract, squashing speculation that he would be playing elsewhere.

I don’t understand this match.
Players are out of shape, just starting their pre-season.
Both sides have new coaches, testing waters.
Is this match arranged by those russian guys that own the rights to friendly matches by both teams?
What a mediocre thing to do for the bucks…

albo,
Clearly you haven’t been reading your football news. Wake up.

It was announced just yesterday that the new Brazil coach Dunga released the names of his new squad. None of the older players were on that list. None of the stars were on that list. To clarify: Ronaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Adriano are not on that list. This is a NEW Brazil team that includes Robinho, Cicinho, Fred and some players from domestic clubs who have never been on the national team.

Before posting a message showing you clearly are not paying attention to football news, do your research.

Sandrahn, thank you for your prompt response but honestly, you’re not answering my questions.
I read all the football news. I know who Dunga is and who he didn’t call and I know who Basile is and what situation he is in now.
I think you’re the one that has to read my post again.
I don’t appreciate the last line of your post.
I post whenever I feel like, sorry if I sound rude.
Best regards.
Albo

lol Albo, sandrahn’s tone was a bit off. I’ve heard Brazil have no competitive matches until the Copa America so presumably they’ll need to play quite a few to get their radically new side right.

But yeah this seems more of a publicity/money-making stunt than anything else - also though it was game everyone wanted to see pre-world cup, I think the game everyone wants to see post-world cup is Italy v. Argentina …

Nicko, thank you for your words.
For what I read during their last days of the WC, a consortium of russian businessmen bought the rights to a few friendly matches by the Albiceleste. I understand they did the same with the Verdeamarelha.
Many in Argentina believe this to be one of the issues that prompted Peckerman to resign.
The players are nowhere near a decent shape, they don’t have game, they’re just starting their pre-season.
To have two heavy sides like Brasil and Argentina play at a time like this, is ridiculous and in no way is a match like this a measure of their capabilities.
It’s just my opinion.
I hope Sandrahn is done with her judging duties…

Given the russian involvement, maybe Argentina v. Chelsea would be better, certainly would be a great spectacle and avoids the weirdness of Brazil v. Argentina in England with nothing to play for.

My guess is that this has something to do with the politics surrounding the choosing of the 2014
host nation. England seems by far the strongest challenger to Brasil for hosting after South Africa.
Maybe England agreed to drop its bid and this
is some kind of acknowledgement from South America. Otherwise, it is like Brasil and Argentina are underscoring the argument that the economics of staging the 2014 Cup in
England would be better,

Guys (specially sandrahn), the squad Dunga announced left out a bunch of people that he plan to call on the future on purpose. He’s giving some people a chance, and leaving people who are sure players (ie, Kaká, Ronaldinho) out because they don’t need to be tested yet. This isn’t his definitive squad. He also had to leave São Paulo and Internacional players out because both teams are still playing on Libertadores and need their whole squad, for example.

And I agree…: an Argentina vs Brazil match so soon won’t do any good tactically or technically. Players are just back to their clubs, and both teams will have a lot of players out it seems.

You know what I hate? Those people who somehow think they’re well educated becaus ethey can read a bunch of articles and can go around saying the classical cliche lines of “Maybe you should do some research before you talk”

Sandrahn, Albo was simply saying a very valid point. They were saying that this game will not be all its cracked up to be. Its a friendly so it’ll just be testing things out. Both teams have new coaches meaning even further testing. And its in England so there’s absoluetly no one to play for really.

So before going around acting like you are an all-knowing soccer God… calm down and recognize other people for having opinions.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Dunga and Basile could sit and talk about the weather, while the guys enjoy a real “picadito” match, the way you see played in Copacabana or Parque Patricios?
Pure art, no prepared plays.
It’d be fun to watch once in a lifetime.
