“My Dear Roberto…” – Alessandro Del Piero Eyes Euro 2008 Recall

Del Piero my dear RobertoAlessandro Del Piero hasn’t played for Italy since the 0-0 draw with France on 8th September 2007. He was completely overlooked for the recent friendly against Portugal, where Italy claimed an impressive enough 3-1 win. So at 33 years old it’s possible he might not wear national team blue again, but he’s planning to. The Juve legend has been in fine club form this season with 11 goals and he’s keen to remind Azzurri coach Roberto Donadoni that he’s still got plenty to offer.

Italia ‘90 hero Toto Schillaci believes Del Piero’s form warrants a recall. “Del Piero is a great player,” Schillaci told a radio station. “It is right that the Nazionale calls those who are in good shape and at the moment that is Del Piero.”

The man himself agrees. Del Piero recently made this not so subtle suggestion in a television interview: “My dear Roberto, I’m asking you to think hard. Take a good look at how I’m doing … And if you need a nice bottle of wine, I can send you some.”

It’s great to see exciting new players at Euro 2008, but the tournament will definitely feel a little empty without some of the old guard. Francesco Totti is already absent through retirement, and there’s a good chance Raul could miss out for Spain. I don’t know the Italy squad well enough to know whether Del Piero deserves a spot in the final 23, but if he keeps up his good form he should at least give Donadoni something to think about, bottle of wine or not.

Here’s a little reminder of what Del Pierio is capable of, with what someone on YouTube has decided are the 10 best goals of his career.

Bottle of wine you say, well then yes Alessandro.

Whoever did this video completely messed up the ranking. There is no way that nº1 goal should even feature here… it was 50% luck! DP just raised his heel when the ball passed by, deflecting it ever so slightly.

The real nº1 (by the opinion of the man himself) is actually goal nº2 in the video. It’s the famous goal vs. Fiorentina which gave Juventus the victory that day: they were losing 0-2, then Vialli scored a double… until minute 87, when a long ball forward was magically flicked by Del Piero straight into the top left corner. An incredibly difficult shot, and a capital goal for the Bianconeri. It’s the goal ADP considers the best of his career to this day.

By the way, another goal missing here is the one he scored vs. Germany, in the 2006 World Cup.
