Martin Hiden: The World’s First Carbon Neutral Footballer

By: Daryl | March 3rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Martin HidenThis is Austrian defender Martin Hiden. OK, so it’s not a very flattering picture, but the Austrian defender deserves some credit. Hiden is apparently the world’s first carbon neutral footballer after agreeing to compensate for all his carbon emissions with investments in Austrian projects to tackle global warming. He’s 35 years old, nearly 36, but could still play a role for Austria at Euro 2008.

Speaking of which, one of the stadiums for the upcoming tournament has also received recognition for environmental friendliness. The Wörthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt, Austria recently received the “green ball,” which is being awarded to any Euro 2008-related projects that make substantial contributions towards the environment. Seems the Wörthersee Stadion uses solar cells to provide some of its heating needs.

So between Martin Hiden and the Wörthersee Stadion, Euro 2008 looks likely to be the greenest football tournament every. Especially since that gaz-guzzling David Beckham won’t be there.
