English Tabloid Seeks Football Team for Euro 2008, Non-German Preferred

TabloidsSteve McClaren’s reputation wasn’t the only thing damaged by England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008. There are all kinds of other consequences too. Sales of tabloid newspapers for example. Without an England team to build up and then knock down, without an army of WAGS to coo over and without an England manager to second-guess twice a day during the tournament, sales will inevitably be down.

Usually, the English red-tops will throw their dubious support behind whichever home nation that makes it. But none of them did this time. Failing that they’ll follow the Republic of Ireland as they did at USA ‘94. But again, no dice this summer. So what’s a tabloid to do, if they want to replace all those lost sales?

Well, credit The Daily Mirror for innovation. The paper’s sports department is looking for a team to follow at Euro 2008 and have opened it up to a reader vote. Just write or email in and tell them who to support.

Maybe this will spark a trend throughout the whole of Great Britain this summer. How great would it be if every British newspaper (the broadsheets too) chose a different Euro 2008 team, and then supported them throughout the tournament?

I’m guessing that all of the Home Nations besides England will get behind Croatia. There are certainly a boatload of Scots that already have. There’s nothing better to buy new loyalties like old spite.

And Croatia loves all of their Scottish fan support…It was a great party in London in the pubs with the Scots after our ousting Enga-land.

heh, imagine them supporting italy. makes me laugh just thinking about it.

  • John

Why don’t they just run a smear campaign against Croatia? Afterall, they’re the ones that ousted the English.

    Uhhhh Croatia.

As for who the English will support, Spain seems like a good fit. You’ve got Fabregas, Alonso and Torres to get the Liverpool and Arsenal fans on board anyway.

    Croatia what? :-)

as a Liverpool fan (and by the way it’s always club before country) I’ve supported Spain throughout the qualifiers. Although its sometimes hard to cheer on the ever-annoying Fabregas, In Alonso and especially Torres (*swoons*), there’s enough to hold my allegiange.

Other than that i’ll be supporting the underdogs: Switzerland, Greece, Austria, Romania, Poland, Sweden. and i’ll be hoping Germany, Italy and France lose horribly.

And all the time i’ll just be thankful that i don’t have to read the all the England rubbish in my newspaper every day. Happy days. It’s gonna be a great tournament

That’s an easy one, to enhance the sales they should support Poland. We’re the biggest European minority in Great Britain.Croatia is also a good call.
