Here Are the Groups for Men’s and Women’s Olympic Soccer

By: Laurie | April 20th, 2008 | 4 Comments »

us-women4.jpgHere’s what the Olympics group stage will look like:

Sixteen teams divided into four groups for the men, with top two from each moving on.

Twelve teams divided into three groups for the women. Top two from each group move on, and also the two top-finishing third place teams.

This list came to us via BBC sport, which reminds us that:

Great Britain will not have a team in Beijing because the International Olympic Committee does not recognise separate teams from Britain’s four home nations.

I am certain that this is the only reason.

And is women’s Group B the Group o’Death or what? Brazil and Germany? You have to feel for Nigeria and N. Korea.

And here are the groups:

Men’s Group

Group A
Ivory Coast
Serbia
Argentina
Australia

Group B
Netherlands
USA
Nigeria
Japan

Group C
China
Belgium
New Zealand
Brazil

Group D
South Korea
Italy
Cameroon
Honduras

——————————————————————————–

Women’s draw:

Group A
China
Canada
Argentina
Sweden

Group B
North Korea
Brazil
Nigeria
Germany

Group C
Norway
Japan
USA
New Zealand

No disrespect to Belgium or New Zealand … and only a little to China … but Brazil has to be joyous about that draw. They shouldn’t be seriously tested until the quarters. I really like the men’s draw overall – no major group of death. Honduras can’t feel great about their chances, but what draw would they feel good about? Group A will be fun to watch … some good young talent from all of those countries, but the Argies should do just fine.

What kind of draw is sandwiching Nigeria in a group with Brazil, Germany, and S.Korea. Its simply a way of saying our Falcons should not to go past the group stage. Its a direct condemnation to first round ouster. But the draw voodooists may yet be surprised at the kind of performance our girls would post. They would shake the world. So go girls, darling Falcons. Show them you are not going to be wiping lassies.
