2007 Copa America Top 10 Group Stage Goals and on to the Semifinals
Alright, so the Copa America quarterfinals weren’t exactly thrilling but the group stage sure had its moments. The video above shows the top 10 goals from the competition’s opening round, which should get you fired up for the semifinals.
The best teams don’t always advance in football tournaments, but in the 2007 Copa America the final four teams remaining are the best teams in the competition. Needless to say this sets up a pair of interesting semifinal matches. Tuesday evening we get to see Uruguay and Brazil battle it out. Think these two countries have a bit of tradition? Uruguay have won the Copa America a record 14 times, but haven’t listed the trophy since 1995. Brazil have captured the tournament championship 7 times and are the tournament holders. Neither side has played consistent football, but both played their best game in their last match.
The other semifinal is a cracker featuring Argentina and Mexico. These two clubs went head to head in the 2006 World Cup and produced one of the tournament’s most scintillating games. Argentina have the strongest team in the competition on paper and they have done nothing on the field to prove that they aren’t the team to beat. They face a Mexico side that has yielded just one goal in four games. Their defense will be put to the test against and Argentina team that has scored 13 games thus far.
