Australia fans will be disappointed in the events of the match but ultimately proud of the way their team held on and continued to push forward throughout the game. Initially, the Aussies were off to a near-perfect start with the first 10 minutes seeing many scoring opportunities while Ghana seemed content to sit back and failed to organize a credible offensive push forward. The Australians were rewarded in the 11th minute when the Ghanaian goalkeeper fumbled a ball sent from a Bresciano free kick. The loose ball landed generously in front of Holman, who had the instincts to put it in the back of the net (not as easy as you’d think – ask France or England!). Video of the first goal below the jump..

Australia refused to sit on their lead and continued to press forward – while the goal seemed to only further rattle Ghana who did not display the disciplined team work that impressed everyone in their first game against Serbia. In one of Ghana’s first offensive opportunities of the match in the 24th minute, they were awarded a corner kick which Asamoah met in the box to send toward the goal. The ball seemingly past 3 different Australian defenders before being cleared off the line…by Harry Kewell’s arm. Meaning, the Ghanaians were denied a certain goal scoring opportunity (because it was on the line) by a handball. The referee immediately produced a red card to Kewell (who had just been given the okay to start for the squad after recovering from injury) and pointed to the penalty spot which Ghana’s Gyan converted by sending the Australian keeper the wrong way (video below).

Australian fans will be quick to claim the call was unfair, but according to our own World Cup Referee (visit his blog here for Referee previews and reviews) the call was spot on. This was his take on the red card and penalty in our live blog…

Regarding the red card, I refer you to the rewording on law 12 of the football rules, altered in 1998: Subsequently, the wording of Law 12 was changed and the term professional foul was replaced by denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to remove the implication that in order for a red card to be issued, such a foul had to be deliberate.

Currently, if a player denies a player an obvious goalscoring opportunity by foul means, whether deliberate or not, he is almost certain to be sent off.

This distinction is why Kewell was sent off whereas Serbia’s Vidic was only given a yellow in yesterday’s game against Germany. In the Serbia-Germany game, the ball was not found to be (by the referee) a certain goal scoring opportunity.

However, its hard not to understand why Australian fans will feel that they were treated unfairly when a rough, late tackle by Ghana’s Addy in the 40th minute was made on Bresciano. The tackle was eerily similar to the one made by Tim Cahill in Australia’s first game versus Germany, but arguably worse. The match referee only adjudicated the tackle to be a yellow and Addy was able to stay on the field (video below).

Unfortunately for spectators, the dramatic events of the first half (two goals, a red and a controversial yellow) did not continue in the second half as both teams struggled to convert their opportunities in front of the goal. Though Ghana had several clear chances in front of the goal, they failed to make the most of them and take advantage of the extra man they had on the field. Meanwhile, Australia fans and fans of the game have to admire the attitude of the Aussie team who never gave up, continued to push forward and demonstrated enormous discipline to not allow the Ghana players any space.

This leaves Australia as the only team in the group that has failed to win a game – with Germany, Serbia and Ghana now all picking up at least 3 points. Serbia’s earlier win over Germany means that Ghana is now leading the group, having won both a match and securing a draw (4 points). Though technically Australia aren’t out of this tournament yet, they will be facing Serbia next game without Harry Kewell (though thanks to FIFA reducing his suspension, Tim Cahill will be available).

Final Score: 1-1 (Holman 11′, Gyan 25′)

Moving through the groups at a pace now, and we find ourselves in Group E. Time to put our necks out and say who we think is going to get through this one. I haven’t been finding it too easy to rank the teams in each group from 1-4, and E is not really an exception.

This group finds Holland, Denmark, Japan and Cameroon together. Four teams with a varied, but rich history in International football. And of course, this group might have got that little bit closer with the news that Arjen Robben, possibly Oranje’s best player limped off in a warm up match.

He’s having a scan tomorrow, which makes doing predictions today somewhat trickier. But I’m going ahead anyway.

Because regardless, I think Holland will win the group. Even if they go into the group stages without Robben, they still have a wealth of absolutely quality attacking options, and Dirk Kuyt. They don’t look as strong at the back (despite a deceptive qualifying run), which I think makes them Dark Horses rather than Tournament favourites, but pre-Robben’s hamstring I was tipping them to go to the last four.

Its a bit trickier putting the rest in order.

Denmark won their qualifying group, which was, on paper a really tough one. Sweden and Portugal were also in their group, but the Swedes seem to have lost the power they had a few years ago, despite Zlatan’s magic, and Portugal never looked particularly convincing regardless of the fact they have Ronaldo in their side. So them winning that qualifying group is not, for me, as convincing as it seems.

Cameroon lit the fuse for African football back in 1990, when Roger Milla and co captured the imagination of the world, but they’ve had a pretty miserable time since, and they didn’t even qualify for the 2006 World Cup. They also only made the Quarter Finals of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. But one African Team is going to get into the knockout stages, I just feel it.

I love Japan. I really enjoyed the show they put on with South Korea in 2002, And I love that their fans get into the spirit of Second Teams and continue to love the tournament even after their country has exited. Clearly, they love their football. The fans have had plenty of time to watch their team this year – they’ve played 10 friendlies since January. They have had really mixed results, and though they look organised, they don’t seem to take to pressure that well.

So bearing that in mind, I’m going to say

Holland
Cameroon
Japan
Denmark

I think. I’m not very confident, and I’m not a betting man. But lets hear your predictions, how do you see Group E finishing?

USA out, Ghana through. Good effort from the Americans, but their tactics were maybe a little too timid. Ghana are the only African team to go through.

Final: Ghana 2-1 United States

Full-time It’s finished 2-1 to Ghana. USA are out, Ghana go through with Italy. I go and drown my sorrows. Thanks to everyone for stopping by, and for all the comments.

90+4 Arena looking very down on the touchline.

90+2 Donovan challenges Mensah for theball. Mensah rolls around like he’s on fire. Everyone knows Donovan can’t hurt you.

90:31 McBride nods down for Olsen to shoot, but it’s blocked.

89:31 Donovan squares to Olsen who swings his leg at thin air. On the break, Essien shoots wide. 5 minutes of stoppage time to come.

88:00 kingson teases Donovan, waiting for him to come before picking up the ball. Italy – Czech Republic has finished 2-0 to Italy.

85:44 Donovan’s corner cleared, Convey plays it back in but it’s over the bar.

84:30 Looks like Pimpong has stitch. Never seen that in a World Cup before.

83:30 Convey with a decent cross, Bocanegra heads it over, but did well to get there. Pimpong down again. He’s not my favourite player.

83:00 Dave O’Brien says “someone has to go on a mad run here.” He is a tactical genius.

82:00 McBride holds it up well then lays it out to Convey with a back heel, but Convey’s cross is too long.

81:21 Italy now winning 2-0. What might have been.

81:00 Donovan’s cross is awful. Goes too high and deep.

80:00 Convey taken down as he tries to burst down the left. Mensah booked.

79:30 Tachie-Mensah replaces Draman.

78:00 Dempsey with a high cross for McBride. Kingson gets there first. Kingson stays down injured. Ghana players seem to bruise easier than pears (or is it peaches?)

77:25 Onyewu holds off Pimpong. No foul this time.

76:00 Draman leaves on a stretcher.

75:27 Draman down injured, crowd whistling. Losing fans are so unsympathetic, he looks injured to me.

73:00 Onyewu gets the call this time, as a Ghana player is hacking at him in the US box. Convey coming on for Eddie Lewis. Fresh legs on the left. Lewis has done pretty well, I’m giving him a round of applause as soon as this sentence is finished.

72:15 Conrad blocks an Appiah shot. One more for Ghana would kill the USA off altogether.

71:26 Johnosn with a great turn and run, but well defended. DMb fould one of the Addo’s in Ghana’s half. At least he’s battling for the ball.

71:00 Italy still winning 1-0.

70:11 DMB wins the ball, dribbles and tries to play EJ through. Nice try. Times Square looking a bit busier.

69:31 Lewis offside now. Ghana playing a very high defensive line.

68:45 Johnson offside from a flick on. Time is ticking.

66:33 Bocanegra shot deflected onto top of the goal. Corner taken by Donovan, Onyewu heads it only just over. Close again.

65:14 Lewis beat his man down the left and crossed, McBride’s diving header hit the post! So very close.

63:42 US seem to be playing a lot of high balls, hoping for McBride & Johnson to win headers. Not smart. Play on the floor.

62:40 Draman was all alone wide left. That’s the danger with a 3-5-2. His cross is blocked by Ben Olsen.

60:00 Johnson on for Cherundolo. That says 3-5-2 to me.

59:30 Someone told him. Johnson is apparently getting ready.

58:22 The other Addo (Eric) replaces Amoah. Does Arena know he can makes subs as well? Some one tell him.

56:30 Still 1-0 to Italy in the other game. Come on! Dempsey beats the full back and crosses, Kingson catches.

54:00 Short corner, and Donovan slips DMB through with a slide pass. His shot is blocked and Ghana break. Amoah’s shot saved well by Keller. End to end.

52:00 Pantsil clears with a bike, but his feet are high. Free kick from wide area to US. Pantsil clears Donovan’s cross for a corner. Draman down injured.

50:30 Eddie Johnson must be frustrated. Maybe Arena is trying to wind him up? Wait till he’s a raging bull then send him on. I’m clutching at straws already.

49:20 Donovan with what looked like a great ball for DaMarcus Beasley, but DMB did a good impression of Ronaldo by not moving.

46:51 Bocanegra nailed Essien, who’s still down. No foul called, but probably should have been.

45:53 Ghana have brought on Otto Addo for Boateng.

45:00 Second half underway. Come on!

-Finally, the penalty on ESPN. No shock, as they agree it was no pen. Pimpong just collapsed, Onyewu’s eyes were on the ball at all times, he even headed it away.

-ESPN are usually so biased it hurts, but for some reason they’re scared of debating that penalty. What’s happening here?

-Just seen the replay on Univision, and still convinced Onyewu did nothing wrong. Am tempted to label Pimpong a diver.

-ESPN not showing the Onyewu “foul” till after the game. Erm, why? I’m off to Univision.

-Czech Republic have had a man sent off against Italy, Polak got two yellow cards.

Half-time Want to see that penalty incident again.

45+2 GOAL! Appiah blasts the penalty into the roof of the net. I’m shell-shocked. Kingson does a forward roll to celebrate.

45+1 PENALTY! Ref says Onyewu fouled Pimpong in the box. I know I’m biased, but he didn’t.

42:40 GOOOAAALLLL!!! Dempsey. DMB dispossessed a Ghana defender and broke through, then played a superb ball across the box to the onrushing Dempsey. Dempsey buried it, and then did a little dance to celebrate.

41:00 Celo Balboa of ESPN says “Ghana won’t know about Ben Olsen.” It’s not as if he’s Wayne Rooney though is it? Olsen’s first act is to foul Essien on the edge of the box. Now they know.

40:00 Reyna has given up and is replaced by Olsen. Fair play to him for trying, but would have preferred either John O’Brien, or even a reshuffle to get Johnson involved.

38:30 DMB with a perfect ball behins Ghana’s defence for Eddie Lewis, whose low cross wasn’t quite good enough. USA have woken up though.

37:38 Dempsey and Donovan with a great passing move, but DMB inexplicably slows it down. Ends with a failed cross.

36:00 Lewis crossed dangerously, Kingson got there first.

35:40 Free kick from the right after Cherundolo was fouled.

34:00 McBride heads it down for Donovan to shoot, but it’s over. That’s what they call route one football.

33:20 Bring on Edward Johnson!

31:50 Dempsey has taken a wack to the side of the head, contesting a header with Shillah. Shillah sees yellow, while Dempsey sees stars.

30:00 Can the US score twice? Dempsey’s header was only their second attempt on target in three games.

28:00 DMB dribbles, lays off to Reyna who loses possession again. Pimpong breaks but shoots (only just) wide. Feel for Reyna but he needs to get himself sorted.

26:30 Some good news. It’s Italy 1-0 Czech Republic. Goal by Materazzi. Reyna back on for the US.

25:11 McBride with a lame shot from the edge of the box. Kingston down injured now, he looks in bad shape, the stretcher is coming for him too.

23:23 Reyna leaving on a stretcher. Great tackle from Draman, doesn’t look like he fouled Reyna at all.

21:40 GOAL! Ghana. Reyna disposesses by Draman who dribbles on Keller and sidefoots home. Reyna caught trying to dribble at the back. He’s still down.

19:50 Reyna doing a decent Pablo Mastroeni impression in defensive midfield. Conrad gets across to make a good defensive header and concede a corner. Corner goes nowhere.

18:00 Onyewu roughs up Pimpong. Free kick goes straight to Keller. It’s a minor miracle that Onyewu made it through the Italy game with just a yellow card.

16:31 Dempset gets his head to a Donovan corner, but it’s straight at Kingston in the Ghana goal. Lewis back on after some ER treatment.

15:25 Eddie Lewis has a cut over his eye after contesting a header with Pantsil. If the World Cup was awarded on bleeding, this US team would be Brazil.

14:19 DaMarcus Beasley looking a little lost in central midfield. Quite surprised to see him playing there but guessing it’s for his pace.

13:22 Boateng fouls Eddie Lewis, who doesn’t look too happy about it.

12:30 “Ghana known as the black stars becuase of the black star on their flag.” Where would we be without Dave O’Brien?

11:00 US midfield is packed in tighter than cars on an LA freeway. Fine for now, but they’ll have to open up at some point.

8:00 Conrad fouls just outside the corner of the box. Ghana square the freekick, but Essien’s shot is wide. Very wide.

6:47 Referee Merk shows Lewis a yellow after an accidental hand ball. Very unnecessary. That’s two acrds in the first few minutes. Is Markus Merk actually Jorge Larrionda in disguise?

4:30 Yellow for Essien after he floored old man Reyna with a sturdy tackle. He’ll miss the next game, if Ghana go through.

3:00 Pimpong crosses but no one there. Disappointing crowd in Times Square. Looked like about 30 people.

2:00 Another cross from Cherundolo, Lewis heads it back across goal. Dempsey fouls the Ghanaian keeper.

0:37 First mention of the sponsor. Good work Dave O’Brien. Cherundolo’s attack down the right blocked by Mohamed. Second cross goes straight to the kepper.

0:00 We’re off!

Both teams in a huddle. Seperate ones obviously.

US national anthem. Gooch looking intense, Reyna not singing as usual.

Ghanaian national anthem. Either there aren’t any words, or the Ghana players aren’t big on karaoke

Teams are coming out, holding hands with children as usual. Good job little Steve Cherundolo’s wearing a USA jersey or we wouldn’t know who was the child and who was the international footballer.

Just over 10 minutes till kick off. The situation for the US is this:

“The United States needs a win over Ghana and a Czech Republic loss to Italy to advance. If the Czechs draw with Italy, the USA must win and make up the goal difference with the Czechs (currently +1 for the Czechs and -3 for USA). If the Czechs beat Italy and the USA beats Ghana, the Americans must make up the goal difference with Italy (currently +2 for Italy).”

For Ghana:

“Ghana will advance with a win over the United States and if there is a winner between Italy and the Czech Republic. They can also advance with a draw against the USA and a Czech Republic loss to Italy. Ghana will win the group if the Czechs and Italy draw and Ghana wins or if the Czechs win and Ghana wins and Ghana finish with a better goal difference. (Czechs +1, Ghana 0).”

Keep an eye on the Czech Republic vs Italy LiveBlog, which Bob is manning. Bad news from there (for USA anyway, probably good news for Ghana) is that both those teams have chosen to go one up front.

Eric Wynalda not happy with USA’s one up front formation, but Eric Wynalda is never happy. I’m OK with it as a starting formation, things can change as the game does if necessary. Would love to see Eddie Johnson at some point.

No Pope, no Mastroeni for USA, no Muntari, no Gyan for Ghana, all through suspension.

ESPN programming begins, 30 minutes before kick off! This must be an important game.

30 minutes till kick off. Have to be honest, I’m pulling for USA so this cold be a slightly partizan LiveBlog. Ghana go through with a win, here’s what the USA need:

“The United States needs a win over Ghana and a Czech Republic loss to Italy to advance.

It is all over and Italy wins it. The Azzurri got the job done in a must win game and they are through to the round of 16. You can read the blow-by-blow below and leave your comments about the match and the teams.

Final: Czech Republic 0-2 Italy

Full time Italy puts together an effective performance in a crucial game to come away with a two goal victory. The Czech Republic never could get it going with too many players missing and a feeble offense that only suffered when it was forced to play a man down for the final 45 minutes. Italy wins Group E and will likely next face either Australia or Croatia. Thanks for joining me. We are liveblogging every match so come back again and see if my fingers are still functioning.

90 A few minutes of added time are all that are left between Italy winning this game and the group. The Czech Republic looking like it will have an early vacation.

88:43 Marco Materazzi down in pain. He looks about how the Czech fans feel right now. Not very happy.

88:12 Pippo’s goal tops off a complete performance from Italy. The Czech Republic was never really in this game and playing a man down for the final 45 minutes made their task next to impossible. Italy will win Group E.

86:08 GOALLLL!! Filippo Inzaghi on a break away from midfield and he dribbles around Cech to score the goal and punch Italy’s ticket to the round of 16.

84:56 If I were a betting man I would say this one is going to end the way it is right now. Of course, if I were a betting man I would have picked Italy and Ghana to go through and I would have won enough money to retire and never have to liveblog again.

83:45 Cliche time: The clock is Czech Republic’s worst enemy.

82:45 If the results stand Italy will finish first in the group and will likely play the Australia-Croatia victor. Pippo with a header that should have gone in but was simply poor.

81:45 Nedved with an in swinger that is caught easily by Buffon.

81:34 Lippi looks like a guy who would be fun to share a bottle of wine with and shoot the shite. Not sure why I think that but he is a funny coach. I like his style even if he was caught up in the match fixing nonsense.

80:01 We’re about five minutes ahead of the other game so at least we can focus on one game for the last five minutes. Starting to feel faint. If you don’t see me type on here it is because I am passed out in a puddle of spit.

78:45 This Czech team looks like a shell of the team that destroyed the US. Injuries and age have hurt them this competition.

76:56 Marek Heinz coming on the Czech Republic as they finally realize having a forward in might be a wise strategy. Kovac out. He played a decent game.

76:35 Totti falls down and he grabs his right buttock. Millions of Italian women have a heart attack at that precise moment.

75:15 One minute Italy looks like 1970 Brazil. The next they look like my men’s team. Can you blame me for being conflicted? Seriously, they have played well enough to get the job done today. But the job is still not done according to my clock.

73:45 Mauro Camoranesi out and Barone in. That was a brilliant sub from a liveblogging spelling standpoint.

73:34 Ghana still leading in the other game. Admit it, you had Ghana and Italy as your picks all along, right?

72:21 Those whistles you hear aren’t in appreciation of Nedved’s beauty but because both teams are playing like crud.

71:12 Italian player down on the ground. It is Fabio Cannavaro who is able to walk it off. He’ll live but he will hear the whistles from the crowd.

70:02 Nedved with another blast that Buffon is able to punch away. Nedved looking like an 18-year-old girl. He has been fantastic. Buffon steady as always.

68:45 Italy starting to look like Argentina. They have been impressive today. A very effective performance without too many mistakes. Wish I could say the same about my typing.

67:34 A refreshing lack of diving, acting, magic spray and fake injuries. Pippo breaks through after a Czech error but he isn’t able to pip it in.

66:34 Anyone else cross-eyed from watching two games and a computer? This can’t be good for our health.

64:56 Italy looks like the team playing behind. I would question the heart of the Czech players but right now I don’t hear any hearts beating. Totti’s shot saved by Cech.

64:12 David Jarolim in for Baros who stunk worse than the World Cup Blog HQ in Berlin. Not a pleasant olfactory experience at the moment.

63:12 Thank you all for joining me today. I know your boss would prefer for you to do work, but reading my wandering rants should help with your productivity later in the day. Just keep telling yourself that. Corner kick Italy and Mauro Camoranesi would have scored if he had shorter hair.

61:45 There is no rain so the Czechs have only themselves to blame. Not sure why Baros is still out there. He has been very ineffective. Kind of as bad as a Milli Vanilli song except he is authentic.

60:12 Nedved might look like Kurt Russel’s wife but he is having one heck of a game. Italy sub are Inzaghi comes in for Gilardinho. Forward for forward. Pippo is what I will call Inzaghi.

59:23 Still 2-1 in favor of Ghana and 1-0 to Italy. Those two teams are looking good to go at this point but there is still a long way to go. Italy in the best position of them all.

58:12 David Jarolim set to come in for the team in when the referee wakes up and lets him.

57:02 Mad props to the Italian fans for breaking out a White Stripes chant. Love that one. It will be stuck in my head all day now.

56:12 Other Nedved, the Czech team hasn’t shown much spirit today. They are a step behind and have their shoulders slumped like it is already over, which it isn’t.

55:25 The Czechs might want to try to convince Beckenbauer or Rudi Voller to play this half. Another shot by Italy but it is off the mark.

54:15 Italy continues to pressure the Czech defense. It looks like the Azzurri have an extra man out there. My calculator tells me that in fact they do. 11 vs. 10

52:46 Neded breaks through on the other end and gets a great shot off that Buffon saves. The Juventus teammates meet up on that one. Excellent run by Goldie Hawn.

52:34 Totti with a shot that is just saved by Cech. Corner for Italy. They seem eager to score another and end this game.

51:02 Simone Perrotta almost with a goal for Italy but just misses. That would have been the nail in the coffin.

49:58 Italy very content to let the Czechs dink around with the ball in the midfield. Baros has the ball taken away from him again. Anyone want to play for the Czechs up front? Today might be your lucky day.

47:04 The referee getting rid of Polak might have rid this game of the worst hair but it also has taken some of the drama out of it. Italy playing a man up and a goal up is an automatic win, right?

46:35 Baros looks like I did after an all night binge in a German bar last week. I feel sorry for the guy. He is normally a class player.

45:35 No changes for either side this half. How long will Baros be left alone up top for the Czechs?

45:01 With Ghana leading the United States, it would be the Black Stars and Italy both going through to the second round if the results stand after the next 45 minutes. The task is a difficult one for Czech Republic. They are playing a man down and have shown little sign that they can crack the very well organized Italy defense. Will that change in the second half? My guess is that you are like me and you will probably watch to find out.

Halftime After 45 minutes, Italy is on top thanks to a corner kick goal by Marco Materazzi in the 27th minute. I’m going to go clean my keyboard and will be back for the second half. Go ahead and leave your thoughts on the first half and what you expect to see in the next half.

45+ Polak gets his second yellow card and he is out of the game. Huge break against Czech Republic as they will have to play a man down and a goal down for the second half.

44:34 A very effective half thus far from Italy. They got what they wanted and now are playing solid defense against a Czech team that lacks for fit forwards.

43:21 Goal for the US and suddenly things are interesting again. Not on the field in this game, but in the standings at least.

42:56 Still Italy in the lead and Ghana beating the United States. Those two teams will go through if they both win. The other two teams get a one way ticket to a summer vacation. Except for the US players who have to go back to Major League Soccer.

41:45 The Czechs are able to get it to the box but then the Italy defense swarms them like pigeons around a piece of bread.

40:23 Polak shown squiting water into his ear. That was gross. Hasn’t he hear of Q-tips?

40:02 Italy corner kick is cleared away. Mauro Camoranesi down looking like he has been shot. Magic water applied. He shall live. That was hit or miss for a second.

38:35 Gilardino goes down outside the box but no call. This ref has been pretty solid to this point. Baros on the other hand just doesn’t seem to have it.

37:35 Nedved should consider a career in scuba diving and/or wig design.

36:45 Other than a couple of long shots from Nedved the Czechs haven’t had much near the Italy goal. They will need to play with desperation in the second half or they will go home and watch Ghana on tv.

34:56 It looks like Polak further dyed his mohawk between games. It looks worse than ever. Talk about a bad hair day or a bad hair life.

33:58 Gilladino and Totti coming way back to receive the ball. Italy might go into one of their pattened defensive games now. Can’t say I blame them. They’ll win the group as things stand. Yellow shown to Pollak.

32:45 Funny how different a game Italy is playing today as opposed to their previous match against the US when they look disorganized and out of control. The only consistent team in this group has been Ghana.

31:45 Pobarsky with a shot from far out and it is off by a km or two. That Italy goal on the corner was just a well played ball and great finish. Czech defender left his man.

30:45 Gattuso shown a yellow after Nedved does his usual fall down on the ground and look dead act.

30:12 My keyboard is officially sticky and gross from all this liveblogging. Anyone have any tips for how I can clean it at halftime?

29:12 Italy should be very happy to sit back on this lead. They know they can go through with a tie. Yet they push forward. Go on them for giving it a go.

27:45 Czech Republic facing really trouble being down and with Ghana up against the US. They will have to unleash their attack and I’m not sure Baros is up tp the task.

26:34 Marco Materazzi with the goal for Italy. Lippi looking like a genius to take him off the bench.

25:47 GOALLLLL! Italy on the corner kick.

24:45 Italy with a chance in the box but Gattuso heads it wide and hide. He looks a bit like Socrates. The Brazil player, not the philosopher.

23:56 If the scores hold up it would be Ghana and Italy. Somehow I don’t think the scores are going to hold up but I am optimistic we’ll see more goals.

22:45 Ghana just scored in the other match so that puts the pressure on the Czech Republic to win this one.

22:34 Perrota sends Totti through but it doesn’t happen. Czechs on the other end and it isn’t going to happen either. A whole lot of not happening right now.

21:03 Game bogging down a bit and the sun has come out. Those two things aren’t connected but I just noticed both. Italy starting to play keep away.

20:01 Czech coach Karel Bruckner looks a bit like my grandfather who never coached in the World Cup but was still a fine man.

18:34 Still scoreless in both game. My right eye is now out of socket trying to watch the other game while I watch this one.

17:45 They are showing Nesta’s crotch on the bench so something must be wrong. Always practice safe sex, folks.

16:32 Marco Materazzi in for Nesta. I have no idea why. He was controlling Baros. Doesn’t look injured. Lippi must not have liked what he saw.

15:45 Another Nedved shot that Buffon has to save. The Czechs showing more interest thus far. Lippi on the sideline looking like he is going to throw in a sub. This early? Interesting.

14:45 Corner by Czech Republic. Nedved takes it. It is cleared away by about four Italy defenders. 9 in the box for Italy. Czechs roll it around.

13:54 Some action but a bit of a slow, methodical pace. The fans on both side trying to inject some energy into the game. Baros is being eaten alive by Nesta. he isn;t the first one.

12:35 So far both teams look interested in winning. Italy pushing forward with its attack while the Czechs are setting up the counter attacks. This could tuen out to be interesting if Italy doesn’t close down the game.

11:45 Baros looks winded and out of synch. Nedved with a long shot that Buffon dives to get. Nedved on his game today.

10:45 Koller looks like a big clown on the Czech bench. Since when did football players start wearing baseball caps? Too bad he is out. He is a fun guy to watch since he is a gentle giant.

10:02 Still scoreless in both games. I am watching both, typing, drinking beer and reading your comments. That is the definition of multitasking.

8:20 Nedved finds Baros in the box but his first touch is worst than mine. That could be a bit of rust on Mr. Milan’s part.

7:56 Italy corner kick. The Azzurri uniforms are classic. It is swung in but nothing comes off it. Czechs seem very interested in counter attacking.

7:12 We’ve gone seven minutes without a card. This is the best referee yet. I think he is from Argentina but I could just be a drunk liveblogger.

5:56 Baros with a hand ball in the Italian box. He gives that look that says the referee forgot to give him a birthday present.

5:26 Nedved looking increasingly like Goldie Hawn as he gets older. Italians go forward but they are unable to finish in the final third. Rudi Voller also here. He isn’t playing either.

4:23 Rosciky gets it on goal but Buffon isn’t challenged. This game features two of the sport’s best keepers.

3:11 Beckenbauer at this game. No, he is not playing.

2:21 Baros with his first touch of the game. It will be interesting to see how effective he is coming off of injury. I doubt he’ll go the full 90 but the Czechs don’t have many options up front.

1:34 Nedved with his first dive of the match but Nesta is called for the foul.

1:25 Italy comes out with a slow attack. Will we see the Italian offense or will they sit back?

0:12 This game kicks off before the other one. Surprised they don’t coordinate better.

Kickoff We’re underway in this critical Group E clash between Italy and the Czech Republic. Both teams have a chance to advance to the round of 16 and both teams could also be sent home today. Thanks for joining me for the liveblog. Your comments are always appreciated. Please keep them clean, have fun and love one another. This will be a fabulous day of World Cup football so let’s enjoy it together.

3 minute countdown: Italy’s turn to stand and sing. The players are locked arm in arm. Another excellent anthem worthy of a fine country. Fans in the stands look like they are going to cry. Very emotional moment for both teams. This is the essence of World Cup football. Let’s hope the game is played well and both teams give their best effort. I’ll try to do the same here.

5 minute countdown: Czech Republic anthem is played and the players kind of sing their way through it. The crowd sounds great and the anthem is pure class. I’m fired up.

7 minute countdown: Both teams are lined up in the tunnel in Hamburg. It is a pleasant summer day here in Germany with temperatures that aren’t hot enough to affect either team. Both teams looking less nervous than the guys playing for USA and Ghana. Czech Republic wearing white. Italy wearing blue. The kid escorts adorned in yellow and red.

10 minute countdown: I will offer no predictions for this game but I do hope that the both games go down to the wire so that we have that drama of watching two games at once for the final 20 minutes with the outcomes still up in the air. Nothing is more exciting than rooting for your team as well as for another team to deliver the result you need.

15 minute countdown: German television giving about equal pregame coverage for both matches. I would have thought they would be all about Italy and Czech Republic but since both games mean something they are dividing it up. In 17 more days I will never, ever have to see a German football talking head again. Not that I am counting the seconds. I wish the World Cup would last all year.

20 minute countdown: Just a reminder that you can follow both games through our liveblogs. Daryl is manning the ship for the USA-Ghana match. Sean and Nick are lucky bastards because they are at that game in Nuremberg. Chris also deserves our spite for going to the Australia-Croatia match in Stuttgart. It is just me and a bottle of Budvar here in Berlin. They say you should never drink alone so I thank you for joining me.

25 minute countdown: Both these teams appear to be going with lone strikers up top. Italy only needs a draw to advance so will we see their infamous 10 behind the ball strategy or will they go for the win and the near certainty of avoiding Brazil next round? The Czechs need to be a bit more offensive minded, which wasn’t a problem when they played the US but was a problem against Ghana. If nothing else, this has turned into the tournament’s most interesting group.

30 minute coundown: In another lifetime I will have Pavel Nedved’s locks. Sigh. Or any of the Italian players’ hair. Sigh again. Poor Jan Koller. He is jealous too. Sitting on the bench covering his hair with a baseball cap turned backwards.

35 minute countdown: Your starting lineups for both teams. Worth noting that Milan Baros is getting the start for the Czechs after sitting out the first two games with injury. No Luca Toni for Italy and of course De Rossi is out after nearly taking off Brian McBride’s noggin.

Czech Republic
1. Petr Cech, 2. Zdenek Grygera, 5. Radoslav Kovac, 6. Marek Jankulovski, 8. Karel Poborsky, 10. Tomas Rosicky, 11. Pavel Nedved, 15. Milan Baros, 19. Jan Polak, 22. David Rozehnal

Italy
1. Gianluigi Buffon, 3. Fabio Grosso, 5. Fabio Cannavaro, 8. Ivan Gennaro Gattuso, 10. Francesco Totti, 11. Alberto Gilardino, 13. Alessandro Nesta, 16. Mauro Camoranesi, 19. Gianluca Zambrotta, 20. Simone Perrotta, 21. Andrea Pirlo

40 minute countdown: Ten teams are already through to the round of 16. Another three teams will advance today. Will it be both of these countries or will Ghana or the United States come up big to take one of the spots? Here are the various scenarios for Italy and Czech Republic. Please forgive me in advance if I mess up the scenarios during the liveblog. I suck at math and have killed too many brain cells drinking beer and liveblogging the past 14 days.

Italy
Italy need just a draw to advance, but a loss could see them eliminated depending on the outcome of the USA-Ghana match. Italy will win the group with a win over the Czech Republic or with a draw, provided Ghana beat the USA. If they draw and the USA beat Ghana, Italy would need a better goal difference than the Americans to win the group (currently +2 for Italy, and -3 for the USA).

Czech Republic
The Czechs need to win to be totally assured of a spot in the Round of 16. If the Czechs earn a draw, they will also have to sweat the USA-Ghana result. They will win the group with a victory over Italy, provided Ghana don’t beat the USA and finish with a better goal difference (Czechs +1, Ghana 0).

50 minute countdown: I’m really looking forward to the next couple of hours watching a pair of games which could lead to any number of different outcomes in Group E. Italy and Czech Republic are two of the big boys in European football and with it all on the line hopefully we will see some great play. I’ll do my best to keep up with it all and hopefully my fingers won’t fall off before this day is done.

Pregame: Should be a great game. Who do you think will win?

One of the things I like the most about the World Cup is that it is just that – a world’s event. Countries both big and small, rich and poor, new and old, are able to compete with one another regardless of their history, their culture and their standing in the global economy. That is evident today with the matches that will bring together players from disparate lands all trying to achieve the same goal, a spot in the next round.

With the United States and Ghana you have one of the world’s richest countries taking on a country that may not be financially rich but is rich in culture. A nation with 300 million citizens going head-to-head with a nation of 22 million people. And for 90 minutes, none of this will matter. It is simply your best 23 versus my best 23. May the best team win/

In the Croatia and Australia match, we see two countries that are tied to one another through immigration and history. It will be evident on the pitch with players from both sides having lived and played in each other’s countries. But there will be no confusion where the loyalties lie once the players lace them up and take the pitch.

Japan and Brazil are also tied to another with Brazilians making up the second largest immigrant group in Japan. Brazil is rich in football tradition. Japan has recently become a footballing nation, although like the United States it has competition from other sports. A win today by Brazil is expected. A win today by Japan would probably be the biggest victory in the country’s football history.

Finally we have Italy and Czech Republic, two European nations now joined together by a common currency and a common desire to bring home a World Cup.

Eight teams from eight different countries with one common goal and millions of fans holding their breath with each and every move.

How cool is that?

Brazil is the only team playing today that is guaranteed a spot in the round of 16. The seven other teams are all still mathematically alive. With two games going on at the same time, you will need at least four sets of eyes keeping track of it all. Here is what each of the teams needs to happen to advance to the next round.

Group E

Italy needs just a draw against the Czech Republic to advance. Italy will win the group with a win or with a draw if Ghana also beats the USA. If they draw and the USA beat Ghana, Italy would need a better goal difference than the Americans to win the group (currently +2 for Italy, and -3 for the USA).

Czech Republic needs to win against Italy to be assured a spot in the Round of 16. If the Czechs earn a draw, they will also have to sweat the USA-Ghana result. They will win the group with a victory over Italy if Ghana doesn’t beat the USA and finish with a better goal difference (Czechs +1, Ghana 0).

Ghana will advance with a win over the United States and if there is a winner between Italy and the Czech Republic. They can also advance with a draw against the USA and a Czech Republic loss to Italy. Ghana will win the group if the Czechs and Italy draw and Ghana wins or if the Czechs win and Ghana wins and Ghana finish with a better goal difference. (Czechs +1, Ghana 0).

If you think all of that is complicated, it only gets worse. The United States needs a win over Ghana and a Czech Republic loss to Italy to advance. If the Czechs draw with Italy, the USA must win and make up the goal difference with the Czechs (currently +1 for the Czechs and -3 for USA). If the Czechs beat Italy and the USA beats Ghana, the Americans must make up the goal difference with Italy (currently +2 for Italy).

GROUP F

Brazil is through. With a win or a draw against Japan they will capture the group. A Brazil loss and a huge Australia win over Croatia would give the Socceroos the group.

Japan can qualify for the Round of 16 with a win over Brazil and a Croatia loss or draw against Australia. Japan can also qualify with a win and a Croatia win if they finish with a better goal difference than Croatia (Croatia currently -1, Japan -2).

Australia needs a win against Croatia to guarantee a spot in the next round, but they can also go through with a draw if Japan fails to beat Brazil.

Croatia can qualify for the Round of 16 with a victory over Australia, provided Japan doesn’t beat Brazil and they finish with a better goal difference (Croatia currently -1, Japan -2).

Got that all straightened out? Good. Here’s how I think things will turn out.

Group E
1. Italy
2. Czech Republic

Group F
1. Brazil
2. Australia

This day is very wide open. What do you think will be the outcome?

Argentina, Netherlands, Ivory Coast and Serbia and Montenegro – before the World Cup kicked off Group C was tapped by most of the football world as the Group of Death. But death came quickly to two of the four teams with Ivory Coast giving a good showing and Serbia and Montenegro’s vaunted defense proving to be anything but vaunted. Now that we’ve seen the games another Group of Death has emerged and that is Group E.

Saturday’s games involving Ghana-Czech Republic and United States-Italy threw the group into a maelstrom and have left us with a pair of group ending matches on June 22 that will be nothing less than a battle with all four teams still holding hope that they will advance to see another round.

The images from this group will include the bloody and battered American forward Brian McBride, the lightening pace of Ghana’s forward trying to crack the impenetrable wall that is Peter Cech, the wonderful combination play of Pavel Nedved and Tomas Rosicky, and the ruggedness of the Azzurri.

Argentina’s performances to date have been nothing short of masterful. The Dutch have more than held their own and have gotten the job done. The success of both teams has taken some of the luster off of their upcoming match and as a neutral fan that is a shame.

What isn’t a shame is the drama in Group E, the new Group of Death.

USA held on to draw 1-1 after the game was reduced to 9 v 10 by a ref who just couldn’t stop showing off his red card.

Final score: Italy 1-1 United States

-Thanks to everyone who stopped by and left comments. Apologies again for the technical breakdown.

-For the record, it was technical problems, and not what jeremy suggested in his 10:30 pm comment. And I wasn’t red carded by Jorge Larrionda either.

Full-time All over. Good result for the US considering they had 9 men, and a preformance ten time better than the last one. Still not sure about the refereeing though.

89:00 Conrad tugs Iaquinta’s shirt in the box. Amazingly, this ref doesn’t blow for a foul, penalty, red card or anything. Conrad lucky though.

84:00 Pirlo splits US defence with a pass, Iaquinta miscontrols it.

79:00 Another shot from Del Piero, this time a curling effort from 25 yards, another save from Keller. Welcome back Kasey.

73:00 Del Pero hit a left footed volley but Keller makes a fantastic athletic save. That was important, no arguments.

65:00 DMB has the ball in the net, with a low left footed shot past Buffon! Ruled out though. McBride was judged to be offside, which he was, and interfering with play, which he wasn’t. Actually he sort of was as he was blocking Buffon’s line of sight and lifted his foot over the shot. Could have stood though. DMB very unlucky.

63:00 Donovan runs at the Italian defence, then slides a ball to McBride. BMB misses this glorious chance by slicing it wide. Maybe he’s still dizzy from the blow to the head.

62:00 Dempsey off. DMB on. Dempsey was doing well.

61:00 Perrotta shoots wide. Toni (who’s been dominated by Gooch) off for Iaquinata.

54:00 Del Piero on for Owngoalio Zaccardo

53:00 Bocanegra heads onto his own bar.

52:00 Conrad on for Convey

-The following wasn’t LiveBlogged but I’ve filled the action in after the event. Just for the record.

-So sorry folks. Technical problems. Hope no one was relying solely on the LiveBlog for information. Looks like I wasn’t needed anyway, as the comments continued regardless! I read the manual and it seems my laptop has a three red card minumum before it explodes.

50:00 Can anyone work out USA’s formation? Looks like 4-3-1 or 3-4-1.

49:00 OK US fans. It’s still 1-1, still OK. I refuse to accept playing 9 v 10 as an excuse for losing.

47:33 Pirlo’s free kick just over. As with Mastroeni, the ref is within the rules to show that card to Pope, but he doesn’t need to. He should be calming things down not creating more drama. Maybe he’s got the World Cup confused with Big Brother?

47:00 Marcello Balboa thinks they should sub out the referee!

46:00 RED CARD! Second yellow for Pope and he’s off as well. This is getting crazy.

45:00 We’re off. 1-1 and 10 v 10 if you’ve just joined us.

-I counted four reds in the first half. De Rossi’s card, Mastroeni’s card, McBride’s nose and Zaccardo’s face.

-Alexi Lalas wants to see DMB in this game, and Eric Wynalda agrees. Not sure which is more shocking, the fact that they want DMB on the field or the fact that they agree on something.

-Seeing that Mastro tackle again, it was more or less two-footed which is obviously not good. On the other hand, if Mastroeni had only been shown a yellow, very few would have been calling for red.

Half-time 1-1, and 10 v 10 for the second half.

44:30 That looked like a yellow to me. Am I being biased? Let me know Jen in Boston. Either way, it’s 10v10 now.

44:00 Red card! Mastroeni shown a straight red for late tackle. He looks shocked. I am too.

42:45 Reyna and Donovan work an opening, Reyna shot blocked. Really liking Reyna today. Vintage.

41:00 Mastro shoots from about 40 yards out. Lands on top of the net, very close. I take back what I said about him earlier.

37:40 Gattuso and Matroeni battling away. They’re similar players (though Gattuso is better with the ball). Would love to see a 50/50 ball contested between those two.

36:00 McBride moving about more this game. In the Czech game he looked like Ronaldo (that’s not a compliment, if you saw him against Croatia).

34:45 Lippi brings off Totti for Gattuso. Totti not fully fit, Gattuso will win planty tackles. Makes sense. Italy have it in the net but it’s offside.

33:30 This is getting pretty rough. Maybe Eddie Johnson was right with his whole “war” thing…

32:00 Thanks Jen in Boston. Just wanted to check.

31:00 McBride back on to a decent size cheer. Toni gets a shot away, just wide. Not happy with Eddie Pope so far.

30:00 If De Rossi should be elbowing anyone in the face it’s Zaccorda.

28:00 Am I being biased or does De Rossi absolutely deserve that? Looked very deliberate and now McBride’s face is streaming with blood.

27:30 Red Card! More good news for USA. De Rossi off. Looks like he elbowed McBride in the face.

26:45 GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL! USA! Zaccardo swings at the ball to clear the cross and slices it past Buffon with his shin. Get in!

26:00 Reyna wins a free kick wide right. He’s covering a lot of ground for an old man.

25:00 Mastroeni with a rubbish shot. Stick to tackling Pablo.

24:00 Just saw the replay of Gilardino’s violin celebration. Is he playing a sad song for US soccer?

21:30 Gilardino unamarked. Looked like the US defence was trying to come out and catch them offside. They failed.

21:30 GOAL! Gilardino scores a header from a Pirlo free kick.

20:00 Pope booked after a tussle with Gilardino. Isn’t he supposed to be infallible? Looks like he got a handful of blue shirt. Now Mastroeni fouls Totti.

19:00 McBride not looking quite as lonely up front today.

17:46 Dempsey shoots just wide. Hope DaMarcus Beasley looks embarrassed on the bench.

15:30 Dempsey with about 50 step overs before crossing, Convey shoots over. Dempsey looking awesome. If he scores, go leave a comment on www.clintdempsey.com

14:00 US free kick right on the edge of the box… Convey hits the wall.

12:30 Canavaro heads wide, but he was offside anyway.

11:30 Onyewu outmuscles Toni without fouling. More like it. Are people from Canada supporting the US?

10:00 Solid tackle from Mastroeni, solid start from USA who are enjoying plenty posession.

8:30 Still scoreless here, but USA looking evenly matched. Donovan nearly put McBride through but Italy had numbers back. Another foul by Onyewu. He’s heading for a yellow card.

6:00 ABC sound guy still struggling. If it is their first day, it might also be their last.

4:30 Totti booked for a foul on Reyna. Sounds like a pro USA crowd. Another foul called on Onyewu.

3:20 McBride wins a flick on, down the left. US get a throw out of it. ABC’s sound guy is having a nightmare as the commentators voices keep going up and down in volume. Must be his (or her) first day.

2:00 Onyewu called for a foul on Gilardino. You can’t manhandle Italian strikers as if they’re Jared Borgetti.

0:32 First mention for the sponsor.

0 We’re off.

-USA now. Dempsey had his eyes closed, Reyna not singing, Brian McBride’s eyes are tiny.

-National anthems. Italy first. One Italy fan singing it in his blue underwear. His parents must be proud.

-Teams are coming out. Got to feel sorry for the kids holding hands with Oguchi Onyewu and Luca Toni. Those guys must look like monsters.

-10 minutes. Even if USA lose, I’d still like to see an improved performance.

-15 minutes to go. ABC’s pre-game is all adverts. Interesting approach.

-I’m watching this on ABC. How about everyone else? Is anyone unlucky enough to be stuck at work on a Saturday?

-In the interests of full disclosure, should let everyone know I’m worldcupblog’s USA blogger, and will be supporting them.

-Italy line up, as expected:

G Buffon
C Zaccardo
A Nesta
F Cannavaro
G Zambrotta
S Perrotta
A Pirlo
D De Rossi
F Totti
L Toni
A Gilardino

-For those who can’t read signatures (not the smartest way to display the team, shame on you US Soccer) the team is:

GK: Keller

RB: Cherundolo
LB: Bocanegra
CB: Pope
CB: Onyewu

DM: Mastroeni

RM: Dempsey
LM: Convey
CM: Reyna
CM: Donovan

CF: McBride

-Any strong reactions to the first eleven? I’m surprised not to see Eddie Johnson, but very pleased to see Clint Dempsey. Love the guy’s attitude.

- Arena has named his starting eleven and it looks like this:

-Bad start for ABC. We just heard their sound guy humming to himself while adjusting the levels on the crowd volume, then he sa “oh jesus!” before they cut to commercials. That’s entertaiment.

-1 hour till kick off. Great result from the Ghana game, though it makes USA’s loss to the Czechs look even worse. If that’s possible.

Pregame: It is do or die time for the US. Will they do or will they die? What do you think?

The Black Stars of Ghana have knocked off the Czech Republic to make Group E very, very interesting. You can read the blow-by-blow below and as always feel free to leave your thoughts about the match.

Final: Ghana 2-0 Czech Republic

Full time Ghana has done it! They have won their first World Cup match and they have done so in convincing fashion against a Czech team that just didn’t have it today. A great individual effort by Petr Cech kept the Czechs in the game the second half but eventually Ghana broke through to seal the win and three points. They are now tied with Italy and the Czechs atop the table in Group E and have put themselves in great position to advance if they can get a win against the United States.

90+ Kingston with a pair of great saves to keep the sheet clean for Ghana.

89:35 It is all Ghana as they attack in waves and it appears that there are no players left in the Czech backline.

88:13 Ghana waltzes in for a goal but it is offside. He shouldn’t have passed that one. Could have scored himself.

87:45 Ghana mere minutes from their first World Cup win ever. The Black Stars have earned the three points today and if not for a great game from Petr Cech they would be up by more than two goals.

86:55 A tale of two games for the Czech Republic. They were fantastic last week and have not had a good game today. Injuries are taking their tool and now they face card suspension challenges. Their match against Italy will test their courage.

85:21 Icing on the cake, Pimpong is on for Ghana. He replaced Gyan who had himself an excellent game up front for Ghana.

84:35 Ghana continues on the attack, playing a man up. This win throws Group E into a whirlpool. The final round of games in this group will mean something after all.

83:21 What a second half from the Black Stars. Ghana is pulling off the biggest upset of the competition thus far, taking down a Czech team that looked unstoppable against the United States.

81:47 GOALLLLL!!!! Muntari hits it into the top of the goal and Ghana has done it. They have cracked Petr Cech and taken a two goal lead.

81:35 Ghana crowd is small but biy are they excited in the stands. The party tonight in Accra will be legendary if they can hold on to win.

80:12 Gyan gets a long pass and he just can’t control it. Ghana killing the Czechs down the middle. The Black Stars continue to stretch the Czech defense.

79:06 Eric Addo on for Matthew Ammoah, who played a great game up front for Ghana.

77:45 Cech again with a kick save. This is starting to sound like a broken record. It is the Ghana offense against Cech and the keeper is winning even though his team is down a goal.

76:23 Every minute of this game is seeing crazy action. The pace is electric. Ghana has brought a great game today and Petr Cech has shown his value.

75:25 Boateng shown a yellow card for triping the Czech player. An opportunity for the Czechs with a free kick. It is hit over the Ghana crossbar and the team from Africa continues to pull off a shocker in Cologne.

73:45 Nedved down with a boo-boo. I can’t believe that Ghana hasn’t scored another goal. Cech is single handedly keeping his team in this game.

72:45 This game is turning into a track meet with lots of up and down action. Ghana smells blood but the Czechs are eager to get the equalizer. Cech with anothe tremendous save. What a keeper!

71:15 Asamoah with another great shot and once again Cech keeps his team alive. All Ghana at this point.

70:02 Asamoah with anothe near goal but Cech swallows up the ball. Ghana looking hungry for another goal while the Czech Republic is on its heels playing a man down.

68:15 Can the Czechs come back with a man down? Can Ghana overcome a missed penalty kick to close out the match? The final 20 minutes are going to be something.

66:45 That was a bit of a questionable penalty award so maybe justice has been served. Ghana had a chance to put the nail in the coffin but the post denies them.

66:00 Gyan drills the penalty kick off the post. Wow, what a miss. Czechs are down a man but still have life.

64:14 Amoah clipped in the box and he is awarded a penalty kick. Tomas Ujfalusi given a straight red card.

64:01 Nedved looks good in the reserved distributor role but he might need to step up to score. The Czech forwards are showing little in this game.

62:30 No sighting of Beckenbauer at this match. A shame since this game has been more entertaining than the Portugal-Iran match the Kaiser attended. I’ll bet my life he is at the US-Italy game later on.

61:15 Boateng has brought some skill off the bench for Ghana. Could you image in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Togo all merged into one country? They might be a power every World Cup.

59:15 Cech punches out Marek Jankulovski instead of the cross. Not the best way to say hello to your mate. He lives though.

58:16 Czech Republic with a free kick into the area and it goes for nothing. The Black Stars of Ghana remain stingy on defense.

56:47 Petr Cech couldn’t have expected he would have this type of workout today. Ghana keeping the pressure on and continues to lead by a goal.

55:47 Plasil with a wide open shot that sails over the bar. I’ve determined through my astute analysis that Plasil is not a very good player.

54:43 Czechs make their second sub with Jiri Stajner on for Pobarsky. I don’t understand that move but I don’t speak Czech so maybe it was smart.

54:15 For a team that has played so well Ghana really deserves more stylish uniforms. They should sue Puma for these white kits.

53:35 Pobarsky and Kuffor banging around and get into it. Remarakably few fights and confrontations this World Cup. Maybe all these yellow cards are helping to cut down on that.

51:45 Gyan with yet another great shot for Ghana. It tests everything Cech has but the Chelsea keeper saves it. Gyan is a danger this game.

50:45 Czechs starting their attack but it goes for nothing. People all over the world are rooting for the Black Stars right now. Well, except for those who want the Czechs to win. I’m indifferent. Just want a good game and to enjoy my pilsner with my virtual friends.

48:52 Strange exression saying you want to be a fly on a wall. That really isn’t desirable. Lovenic gets a card. His second of the competition so he’ll be out against Italy. Czech Republic will have no forwards for that game.

48:03 I wish I could have been a fly on the walls inside the Czech locker room at half. Their coach could not have been pleased with the way they played the first half. Credit to Ghana though for playing well.

45:38 Nedved heads in a goal but he is offside. Just by a hair but that looked to be the right call. That would have made things very interesting if it counted.

45:10 Horror hair candidates Jan Polack on for the Czech Republic. Boateng on for Ghana.

45:01 We are underway in the second half of this Group E clash. Ghana is trying to get the first win by an African team in the 2006 World Cup. The Czech Republic is trying to come back to win and stay atop the group. The next 45 minutes should be excellent. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comments.

Halftime A good game thus far with Ghana taking a lead in the first two minutes and playing the Czech Republic straight up the rest of the half. I’m off to learn how to spell and type. I’ll be back at the start of the second half. Go ahead and leave your thoughts on the first half. Your comments and jokes are the spice of life.

44:01 Ghana should be content taking the lead into the half but they continue to search for a second goal. I like how this team isn’t sitting back. They continue to play their game even with a lead. Will they do the same in the second half?

43:03 Nedved finds Pobarsky who crosses it in and it doesn’t quite go on goal. Great ball from Nedved. That looks like the Czech team I know.

41:23 Czech offense looking a bit like my men’s league team. We are in last place.

40:02 Gyan down on the ground after falling on his tailbone. A little magic spray and TLC from the trainers should make the goal scorer feel better.

39:14 Ghana continues to attack and to create some problems for the Czech defense with their speed on the wings. Appiah doesn’t miss by much with a shot from outside the box.

38:02 Admit it, you all had Ghana winning this game in your predictions, right?

36:23 Essien booked after a collision with Nedved. We’ve seen worse from Essien in our days.

35:55 The Czech attack is missing Koller and Baros. Their midfield might need to score if they have any hopes of getting the equalizer.

34:02 Czechs with a corner that leads to a scramble in front of the Ghana goal. This keeper Kingston likes to go on walkabouts. He is going to give me the shakes it he keeps that up.

33:40 This Ghana team showing that they deserve to be on the world’s biggest stage. They are more than holding their own against the second ranked team in the world.

31:46 Czech fans trying to wake up their lads. Ghana continues to put the pressure on. Gyan with a point blank shot that is saved by Cech. Wow, that was close to being two goals for Gyan.

29:57 Amoah with a nifty turn and shot but it would only get you points in American football.

29:01 Pobarsky with a close in shot that goes just wide. He is really the only Czech player showing much thus far. He is creating opportunities in the midfield. Still Ghana by a goal.

28:02 Czech attack is breaking down. Ghana is playing with no fear and a world of confidence. They feel they can win this game. They might be right.

26:45 Ghana free kick from the side of the area. It is hit back by the Czech defender and the Black Stars get a corner. It is cleared away. Ghana players joking on the bench. Another corner for Ghana.

24:12 Marek Jankulovski makes a run from the back and gets a shot on the Ghana goal. His permanent five o’clock shadow is an art form in its on right.

22:57 Muntari with a run but his shot is way off. Petr Cech is such a quality keeper. Ghana scoring on him is huge.

22:35 Rosicky wakes up to make a nice run with the ball but Plasil does nothing with it. The Ghana coach looks like a physical education teacher. Tuck your shirt in man. You are on television.

21:04 Czech free kick from far out. Nedved hits it about as well as I would. In other words, not very good. Still Ghana by a goal.

20:15 Tomás Rosicky pretty much a non factor at this point. Pobarsky is the only Czech player showing much out there. I think they are a bit stunned still by that early goal. I know I am. I’m also hungry but that isn’t Ghana’s fault.

18:45 Ghana showing it is dangerous in the counter attack. Czechs getting bogged down in their attacking third. Doesn’t look like the same Czech team that dismantled the USA.

18:02 Appiah warned by the ref but doesn’t get a card. A rare case of a ref using restraint. Good on him. Just like that Addo picks up a yellow. I typed too soon.

16:52 We’ve gone more than 16 minutes without a yellow card. That might be a record. Also, I believe that goal was the fastest of the tournament but I could be wrong. Correct me if I am.

15:25 Some good action from the Czechs but Ghana’s defense remains tight and they are eager to get the ball up the field. Ghana playing an entertaining style of football. Group E could really be wide open now.

14:05 Suddenly there are a whole lot of people rooting for Ghana around the world. The beauty of the World Cup.

12:35 Another direct kick for Ghana. It goes well over the bar and the Czech fans sigh in relief. This game has started exactly as Ghana wanted it to. Makes you wonder even more about the United States’ perfomance against the Czechs.

11:35 Nedved shot taken in by Kingston. Great shot of Nedved’s hair being shined on by the sun. Nedved is fun to watch when he doesn’t dive.

10:35 Ghana looks young and hungry. Czech Republic looks old and tired. I’m looking something in between today after liveblogging 9 matches thus far.

9:45 The refereeing delays the free kick so he can get some camera time. It is finally taken and Cech brings it in.

9:02 Nedved creating some chances for Czech Republic but they haven’t cracked the Ghana defense yet. Ghana with a free kick at the other end.

7:42 Plasil with a blast well over the Ghana goal. He looks like a mini Nedved with his shaggy hair.

7:25 For those scoring at home I am enjoying a tasty pilsner for this game. I am still wearing the Angola flag from last night. Czechs settling down a bit and looking to get it even.

5:45 Ghana doing what no minnow has been able to do thus far, score early. The early goal scoring teams have won most of the games this competition. Will that hold true today? I don’t think this will be the only goal of the match.

4:15 The crowd seems stunned by the early goal. Czech corner and they get a shot out of it. Ghana keeper is always an accident waiting to happen. He makes my spleen hurt just watching him.

3:10 You couldn’t ask for a better start from Ghana. Amoah with a shot that is wide but it is all Ghana already. The Czechs needs to wake up quickly or this might be a long day.

1:05 GOALLLLL!!!! Asamoah Gyan knocks it in from the top of the box. Wow, what a start for Ghana!

0:56 Early corner kick for the Black Stars. Muntaru swings it in and Cech punches it out.

0:05 Argh, the return of the Shadow. It is on the far side of the pitch. I thought we chased that thing away with an Ecuadorian shaman.

Kickoff We are underway from Cologne in this Group E clash between Ghana and Czech Republic. Ghana is looking for their first World Cup point. The Czech Republic looking to earn a spot in the knockout round. Thanks for joining me for this weekend game. Your comments are very much appreciated. Let’s keep it clean, have fun and love one another during what will hopefully be an entertaining 90 minutes of World Cup football.

Pregame

3 minute countdown: It is time for the Ghana anthem. It is God Bless our Homeland. An upbeat tune which the players largely sing softly. I’ll never get tired off this part of the World Cup. Love to ceremony, the anthems, the exchange of gifts…it is all cool.

5 minute countdown: The national anthem of the Czech Republic is played. It starts off slow but picks up midway through. The players are a little reserved in their singing. Nice anthem.

7 minute countdown: The players are led out onto the pitch and line up on their respective sides. When I grow up I want to be one of the kids that gets to walk out with the players.

10 minute countdown: Both teams are lining up in the tunnel. Ghana wearing their white kits. Czech Republic decked out in red. The Czech fans fill the stadium but the Ghana fans are better dancers.

15 minute countdown: Essien showed his skills last game for Ghana. It will be fun to see how he does against a very experienced and steady Czech midfield. Not sure why but the German commentators always say Chelsea London. But they never say Arsenal London. It is just Arsenal.

17 minute countdown: Seeing the replays of Samuel Kuffour’s mistaken back pass against Italy is still sad. To his credit he stood in front of the reporters after tha game and took responsibility for his mistake. Keep an eye on how he responds this game.

20 minute countdown: Best names on the rosters – For Ghana it is Razak Pimpong. For Czech Republic it is Antonin Kinsky. I could have sworn I read that as “Kinky”.

25 minute countdown: There are few things in life less interesting than watching players warm up for a match. Fortunately we are being treated to the talking heads on German television telling us how the game is going to be played out. Even in a foreign language you can tell it is all nonsense. And the Czech players continue to do sprints in the background. Nedved practicing his flops.

30 minute countdown: Vratislav Lokvenc to get the start for the injured Koller. Lokvenc has experience and a scary sounding name, but he hasn’t had that much success in international matches. He’ll need to step it up today. We all need to step it up today. It is the World Cup and it is a Saturday so there are no excuses for not tuning in.

35 minute countdown: Good images of the Czech fans enjoying some tasty pregame beverages. I might just have to do the same. Strong showing from the Czech fans in Cologne. It will be interesting to see if their team can continue the high level of play it displayed when it beat US 3-0.

40 minute countdown: I will never tire of Nutella. It goes so well with German bread. So far in this competition the African teams have played well but they are just a notch below where they need to be. Ghana looked good against Italy last week but came up short. Only Angola and Tunisia have gotten results, both earning ties.

45 minute countdown: Portugal gets the job done against Iran and is through to the knockout stage. The Czech Republic is looking for a similiar result in Group E while Ghana is hoping to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Should be a real contrast in styles. It is a cool day here in Germany so weather shouldn’t be a factor.

Pregame: The Czech Republic looked very strong against the USA, but will be missing Koller and Baros for this game. Does Ghana have a chance?

Live: Italy 2-0 Ghana

Full time Italy comes away with a deserved 2-0 win against a spirited Ghana side. Pirlo and Iaquinta are the goal scorers for the Azzurri who joing the Czech Republic atop the Group E table with three points. An impressive debut for Ghana but the Black Stars come up short. Thanks for joining us for today’s liveblogs. We’ll be typing like crazy until the end of the tournament so come back again. Be safe kids.

89:14 Things we learned from this match. Italy is strong. Ghana is better than anticipated. There is a player named Pimpong in the World Cup.

88:15 Ghana has nothing to be ashamed of from this performance. They played an on form Italy team very well. A couple of breaks either way in this might have been a different result.

87:03 Iaquinta picks up the yellow card for being a butthead.

85:13 Italy will play the next five minutes trying not to pick up cards. My on the spot analysis says they’ll have no problem against the US. Ghana might give the Czech Republic a game but I see the two European teams advancing at this point. Bold prediction, I know.

83:47 I feel bad for Ghana. They’ve played a great game and to make a mistake like that in the final minutes is heartbreaking. Italy deserves the win but still….

82:21 GOALLLL!!!! Italy. Horrible mistake by the Ghana defender Kafour leads to an Iaquinta goal. 2-0 Italy. Game over.

81:29 Del Piero on and Toni off. Very solid game from Luca Toni. What a luxury it is for Italy to have Del Piero come off the bench.

80:45 Essien with a long shot that isn’t close. If you don’t like this game then you should consider a new hobby. I recommend knitting.

79:46 Ghana fans and neutrals on their feet imploring their team to score a goal. Can they follow the lead of the Aussies and pull off a late game miracle?

78:03 Ghana player with a serious dive in the box. He split two defenders and then lept to the ground. Good no call.

76:31 Iaquinta gets the magic spray and he is ready to run back onto the pitch. I need some magic spray for my fingers. They ache.

74:45 Iaquinta breaks free but the flag is up. He was brought down by the Ghana player and now needs to have his leg amputated. Replay shows that he is a cm offside. That was as close as it gets.

73:49 Pimpong is bouncing all over the field for Ghana. Aha, finally had an excuse to write that.

73:02 Ghana leads possession 53-47 but Italy is ahead where it counts. 1-0 Azzurri on a goal by Pirlo in the 40th.

72:16 Ghana has twenty minutes to make history. Can you imagine how exciting it must be in that country right now. Ghana player pushed down in the box but no call. Probably the right no call.

70:01 It is killing me that Pimpong is playing in the latest game when I am tired and out of jokes. His name sounds awesome in German. Who knows how it translates.

67:50 Pimpong on for Amoah. They have a player named Pimpong. Wow, you have to love Ghana.

66:10 Perrotta with a dead on shot. Ghana keeper Kingston having himself a great game. Apologies for ripping on him earlier. He looks dodgy but in a good way now.

64:41 Asamoah gets a yellow card for a dangerous slide tackle. The yello cards are starting to come out in this one but the play isn’t especially dirty.

63:07 Appiah finds some space and rips a shot well wide. Ghana creating chances. Iaquinta in for Gilardino for Italy.

61:23 Camoranesi gets a yellow for tripping a Ghana player. He might also be penalized for having an out of control ponytail.

60:12 Every time I think Ghana is about ready to crack they start stringing together passes. They have kept their composure nicely and have put themselves in a position to get a result.

58:22 I’m starting to think that this game and the Argentina-Ivory Coast match have been the best played of the entire competition. End to end excitement in both games.

56:40 Totti with ice on his leg on the bench. I think he just got kicked and will end up with one of those ugly blue bruises. I have one myself from kicking a door the other night after a goal. Wasn’t a pretty scene here.

55:18 Totti gets cracked on the leg and he is being replaced by Camoranesi. Don’t think Totti is seriously hurt but given his injury history probably is a good move to get him out.

54:42 In my next life I really want to be a third string keeper. You sit on the bench picking grass without a worry in the world.

54:01 Ghana controlling the action the past few minutes. These Black Stars can play. Will they be the first African team to get a point this tournament?

52:32 Lots of back and forth action. This game has been played at a very good pace. Compared to the earlier matches today this one is much more entertaining. Still 1-0 Italy of a Pirlo goal in the 40th.

51:45If I haven’t thanked you already, I am much obliged for your comments and for you coming to World Cup Blog. We’re liveblogging every game so tell your friends and loved ones. Heck, tell your enemies too.

50:31 Gilardino breaks free and hammers a shot that Kingston kick saves away. The Ghana keeper has played a good game despite looking dodgy at times.

48:45 If only Puma knew that Ghana would be so decent they might have spent a little more time designing a kit. These Ghana kits are boring with a capital ugly.

47:45 This is probably the best Italy has started a tournament in a long time. They are playing very well tonight against a Ghana team that is going to prove to be dangerous this competition.

46:31 Italy breaks free but the cross is just out of the range of Toni. Again he gives the constipated look. The Italian team is very dramatic. Makes me laugh every time.

45:13 For those scoring at home I am enjoying a nice Hefeweizen this half. God bless German beer. My apolgies to those of you who can’t drink and work.

45:01 Shillia in for Pappoe in the Ghana backline. Game is back on.

Halftime The first 45 minutes were quite entertaining with both sides having a number of chances to score. Italy looks solid and Ghana does not look like a minnow. The only goal is by Pirlo in the 40th minute. A real beauty of a goal. I’m off to get another beer and will be back right before the start of the half. What are your thoughts on the match thus far?

44:56 Rossi with a near goal but a diving Kingston breaks it up. Could have been a crushing goal before the whistle.

43:45 Ghana with space to operate in the midfield but Italy comes back to recover. Shouldn’t have much added time.

42:45 Referee largely a non factor to this point. Just the way it should be. There was a shot of a Ghana fan after the Italy goal and it was just crushing. We’ve all been there.

42:00 Ghana looking to settle the play down. Italy is always tough to come back on. My guess is this Ghana team will throw everything they have at the game.

40:29 A well earned goal by Italy. How will Ghana respond to the adversity?

39:15 GOALLLLL! Andrea Pirlo drills it from just outside the box right into the corner of the net. Very nice goal.

38:02 Essien wins the corner kick. Played into the box and Buffon comes down with it. Wow, that is an ugly keeper’s kits. What color is that?

37:25 So far a very cleanly played game with lots of pace. Both teams have attacks that are worthy. Italy playing a much more offensive style of football than in years past. Really quite refreshing to see.

35:12 Luca Toni continuing to wreak havoc but unable to put the ball in the goal. This game is being played in waves of attack.

34:24 If I am Ghana I don’t want to see Totti line up over a free kick. What a cannon of a shot he has.

33:25 Both sides could be on the board at this point. Lots of close calls. Still 0-0.

32:17 Totti knocked down by an indvertant elbow. Free kick Azzurri. Totti blasts it from 40 out and Kingston has to rise to knock it over the bar. This game is coming to life in a big way.

31:05 Papoe with another golden chance for Ghana. If the Black Stars would keep their shots down they might actually take the lead.

30:11 Essien breaks free but his left footed shot sails wide. Essien showing his skill in this one.

30:00 One third of the way through the match and Italy has had the better chances, but credit must go to Ghana for staying composed and making this a game.

28:22 Asamoah with a shot from long range and it is just off the mark. Buffon might not have gotten to that if it was on goal. Good action now.

26:54 That was just a splendid individual move by Toni. He beat his defender and nailed it but the bar is Ghana’s 12th man.

26:11 Ghana creating some chances but looks reluctant to shoot. Luca Toni goes one on one with the defender and he drills the bottom of the cross bar. How did that not go in? Close

24:01 Italy looking sharp. They also are on form with disappointed looks. The wave is going around the stadium and Ghana clears it out of their end. Italy smells blood.

23:05 Totti starting to come to life for Italy. He seems to be moving well coming off of that injury.

22:11 How about this Group E? Czechs looked great today and both Italy and Ghana look decent. Corner kick Italy and it is eaten up by Kingston.

19:50 Asamoah showing nice skill for the Black Stars. The German annoucer constantly refers to Essien as Michael Essien, Chelsea London.

18:34 In absolute contrast to Angola, Ghana looks comfortable playing in the World Cup against a good team.

17:34 No shock in this statement, but the Italian defense looks very well organized.

15:43 By this point last evening C. Ronaldo had already had 25 pouts. None on either side thus far. The Italian fans are singing a White Stripes tune. Bonus points for them.

14:59 italy free kick and it is blasted over the bar by Totti who also gives the I’m constipated and not feeling good about life look.

14:30 Anybody know what font they use on the Italy uniforms? Has to be one of the least readable choices out there.

13:00 Italy with the better run of play thus far but Ghana looks like they can play with the big boys. This one could be interesting if the Ghana keeper gets his head in the game.

11:50 Wow, this Ghana keeper Kingston is something to watch and not in a good way. He is all over the place and nowhere near the ball. My men’s league team keeper might be better.

11:15 Free kick for Ghana and it is booted away by Italy which races down the pitch. Luca Toni nearly hits in a cross and Ghana dodges a bullet.

9:40 De Rossi kicks the Ghana player down just outside the box and he is awarded with a little yellow card from the Brazilian ref.

8:45 I once knew a guy who got malaria in Ghana. John, if you are reading this I hope you are feeling better. Little action to this point.

7:45 The Italy captian Cannavaro heads one over the crossbar and then gives the “I’m constipated and feeling bad” look.

6:55 Italy corner kick. This Ghana keeper Kingston looks unsteady. Hit over the endline for another corner, which is punched away by the Black Stars keeper.

5:45 Ghana standing toe-to-toe with Italy. They don’t appear to be overwhelmed by the moment.

4:00 I’ve decided that Luca Toni is my favorite name to hear in German. Followed closely by Eric Addo. Nothing happening to this point. For those of you at work this might be a good time to work on something.

2:39 Shot of Ghana coach who is known as Doya. The controversial Serb has somehow avoide being sacked before the World Cup. Not quite the mess of Togo but still not a good situation.

1:32 Luca Toni hits the turf. Ahhhh the familiar site of Italian players on the ground.

1:02 Both teams come out running faster than the ball. Lots of nervous energy. We’ve seen how important early moments in the games are this competition.

Kickoff We’re underway in the 11th match of the 2006 World Cup. Ghana makes its World Cup debut against 3-time champion Italy.

Pregame:

2 minutes: 4-3-1-2 for Italy and a 4-4-2 for Ghana

4 minutes to kickoff: Ghana players with hands over hearts. Singing but without the enthusiasm of Italy. Could this affect the outcome of the match? Probably not but I’m a little loopy after all these game.

5 minutes to kickoff: Italian anthem is played. The players are locked arm in arm and sing with much pride. Funny how some teams choose to sing and others are more reticent.

6 minutes to kickoff: Franz Beckenbauer is in the stands. Sitting next to Sepp Blatter. Beckenbauer is the man of the match before it even starts.

8 minutes to kickoff: The players are lined up in the tunnel. The referees lead them out and they line up on the pitch for the wonderful moment when the national anthems are played. Still gives me goose bumps each game. Italy is wearing their classic blue. Ghana adorned in very bland white Puma kits.

10 minutes to kickoff: Will Franz Beckenbauer be in the stands for this one? He was at the US match so his helicopter will have to race against time to deliver him from Gelsenkirchen to Hanover. Luckiest guy in the world getting to see all these games in person.

13 minutes to kickoff: Some cool shots of stands in the fans. Ghana might not have huge numbers but their supporters are very festive. The Azzurri has brought a good number to Hanover. Have to think a lot of neutral fans will be rooting for the underdog in this one.

15 minutes to kickoff: After two weeks in Germany I think I finally figured out the German words for “player” “team” and “coach.” Small accomplishments. With 54 more games to watch I’m still thinking I’ll be fluent by the end of this tournament. Nothing beats a football immersion language course.

20 minutes to kickoff: The sun is starting to go down and after a warm day in Germany it is finally cooling off. I’m still sweating buckets thanks to the massive heat given off by the projection screen tv at World Cup Blog HQ in Berlin. Probably just means I need to keep hydrated with more beer.

25 minutes to kickoff: Watching the Italian players warm up makes me feel very inadequate in the hair department.

30 minutes to kickoff: Shots of Ghana players on their hands and knees praying. Seriously.

The final game of the day. My fingers are fired up and ready to go. Get your predictions down now or forever hold your peace.
