Live: Portugal 2-1 Mexico

Full time in the Iran Angola game too, which has finished 1-1 so Mexico are through. Great first half here, not such a great second half. Thanks to all for stopping by.

Full-time Portugal top Group D with 3 wins, Mexico should take second unless there’s an avalanche of late Angolan goals. Go here to see if that happens.

90+1:48 Big Phil points to the corner flags, Boa Morte disagrees and heads toward goal. Maniche’s shot is saved.

90:00 Yellow card for Gomes. ESPN commentator: “That yellow card is getting worn out.” A rare good moment from ESPN.

86:00 Terrible throw out from Sanchez, Tiago collects and shoots instantly but it’s over. Ricardo runs straaight into his nets. That wouldn’t be out of place on “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (US) “You’ve Been Framed” (UK) or whatever your countries equivelant is. Please let me know?

84:00 Franco controls with his chest in the area, then flicks over his head and, lets be honest here, takes a dive. Ref understandably not convinced.

82:14 Simoa bursts down the right and crosses, Sanchex takes an accidental wack from Marquez. Boa Morte comically misses the ball wide left. Was he being sporting or was his timing off?

80:00 Iran 1-1 Angola. Iran have equalised. Mexico can relax a bit.

79:15 Portugal take Figo off for Boa Morte. Figo gives Boa Morte a little kiss on the cheek as they pass.

77:09 Fonseca with another flick header, wide.

76:23 Eusebio in the stands. Wonder if he’s got his boots, just in case.

75:18 Maniche skies another shot. His early goal, coupled with his Euro 2004 wonder strike have given this guy a false sense of confidence in his shooting ability.

74:00 Caneira with a big slide tackle. Nothing wrong with him.

72:40 Bravo goes down in the box, but only gets a corner, which comes to nothing. Caneira looks in pain, but ref not convinced.

71:00 Marquez does the business with a tackle and through ball, but Castro’s shot or pass was so bad I can’t tell what it was. Gomes has a half chance but shoots over.

68:00 Mexican ball winner Castro brought on for Pineda. Portugal change Postiga for Gomes.

65:00 Angola’s goal differential now even, Mexico have plus 1. Also Mexico have scored 4 goals, Angola just 1.

64:00 Angola lead 1-0. Calculators at the ready…

63:14 Bravo put through but shoots over. Looked a lot like his penalty.

62:00 Maybe not a penalty, but not necessarily a dive either. Another unnecessary red for a CONCACAF team. Conspiracy!

61:00 HE’S OFF! That was Perez’s second yellow. Early bath.

59:40 That looked more like a penalty. Great one two passing from Mexico, Miguel looks to have fouled Perez. Maybe not. Perez booked for diving.

57:00 MISSED! BY A LONG WAY! Bravo skies the penalty.

56:00 PENALTY! Miguel either handballed on the floor or fouled Perez. Or neither. Not sure that was a good call.

55:00 Another comedy pass from Marquez, what is wrong with him? Fonseca with a weak shot. Trickled towards Ricardo who checked his watch before picking it up.

51:20 Pardo takes his time lining up a free kick from distance before firing it wide.

51:00 Great shot of Lavolpe’s dragon tie. Wish I had HD.

50:00 Both teams scrapping for possession here. Not pretty.

45:00 Second half underway. Mexico have brought skilfull little (5′4″) Zinha on for Rodriguez. Average height of the Mexican team takes a severe drop, but it’s an attacking substitution.

-To answer the drawing of lots (sadly no knife fight) debate, Ireland got lucky in 1990, being awarded second place in Group F via this method. Holland missed out. Does anyone else think drawng lots is an absolutley ridiculous way to decide things?

Half-time Good 45 minutes, and surprisingly feisty.

45+1:30 Might have worked though. Marquez nearly put an attacker through with a great ball.

45+1 Marquez changes his studs (or cleats depending on where you’re from). Excuses, excuses.

44:00 Massive goalmouth scramble results in Ricardo holding his knee. Looks like Fonseca caught the keeper while attacking a great cross.

42:44 Long range shot from Maniche, held by Sanchez without trouble. Pardo shot at the other end demands a big diving save from Ricardo, which he manages.

40:46 Figo loses a 1 v 3 battle aginst Mexican defenders but Marquez ruins the Mexican counter attack with a sloppy pass. Not the pony tailed one’s best night so far, though he does have an assist.

39:00 Do any World Cup Blog readers own a LaVolpe style dragon tie?

38:25 Another header by Fonseca, just wide but not much power behind it.

37:00 Figo and Salcido collapse in a heap. Portugal frere kick fired like an optimistic rocket by Simao. It bounces around before going out for a corner, which is cleared.

33:00 Miguel wins a corner for Portugal. For anyone confused about how goal differential works, it’s goals scored minus goals conceded. If that’s level between two teams then it’s decided by goals scored.

31:00 Another flip of the channel finds Univision’s commentary team in a happier mood that last time I visited. ESPN’s guys still sound like robots, only with less personality.

29:00 GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! Fonseca scores a header from the corner, just glancing it past Ricardo. Gol! Gol! Gol! etcetera!

28:00 Marquez flicks on a cross, Bravo shoots but Ricardo saves onto the bar.

27:00 Postiga draws a save from Sanchez, Tiago volleys the rebound over. Mexico’s defence looks like a poorly manufactured sieve.

25:52 Got to wonder what Marquez thought he was doing. Yellow cards for Miguel for Portugal and Perez for Mexico. Getting niggly.

24:29 A quick flip of the channels finds Univision’s commentators in uncharacteristically downbeat mood.

23:45 GOAL! Simao scores the pen after a stuttered run up. 2-0.

22:00 Figo’s free kick hits the wall, the bounces over Sanchez for a corner. Marquez handballs from the corner. PENALTY!

21:0 Maniche robs Marquez in midfield and storms towards goal, before becoming the meat in a Mexican defender sandwich.

19:00 Angola still 0-0 with Iran, Mexico still safe. Figo beats his full back and crosses with the outside of his foot, but Sanchez claims it.

17:00 Bravo thought he’d skinned Meira with a nice move, but Meira recovers to get between Bravo and the ball. Liking Bravo and Fonseca’s willingness to run at defenders.

14:23 ESPN commentator just called Fransisco Rodriguez (no. 22) “Mexico’s version of Peter Crouch.” Isn’t that an insult?

11:00 Portugal passing it around much better than against Iran. Of course, an early lead will do that for you.

7:30 Oscar Bravo nearly replies for Mexico, flashing a volley just wide. Looks like Scolari’s predicted 30-0 to Mexico is off. Hope no one put money on it.

7:00 Keep an eye on the Iran vs Angola LiveBlog, I’ll check the score and report back periodically.

5:30 Simao squares to Maniche in the box, who sidefoots it top right corner. Early lead, and good news for Angola fans.

5:10 GOAL! Portugal!

4:00 Lavolpe seen stroking his stubbly beard. Big question: will we see him smoke on camera today?

3:00 Mexican keeper Sanchez comes out to head the ball. Always good to see.

1:30 Maybe Fonseca is Ronaldinho. He’s just dribbled past two Portuguese defenders and got a shot away. Ricardo held it though.

0:00 We’re off.

-Now Univision have Postiga starting instead of Pauleta for Portugal. Line ups below adjusted accordingly. Kick off any second.

-Mexico’s players sing their anthem loud and proud. If the World Cup was decided on singing, Mexico would be Brazil. And Kiki Fonseca would be Ronaldinho.

-National anthems on Univision, basketball on ESPN. Good to see Portugal’s Brazilian coach Scoalri singing the Portuguese national anthem.

-5(ish) minutes to go. Portugal’s Pauleta is the only player starting for them who will be suspended if booked.

-20(ish) minutes till kick off. Mexico still missing their Jared Borgetti goal machine. Portugal resting Cristiano Ronaldo, Nuno Valente, Costinha, and Deco all of whom are one yellow card away from a suspension. “They won’t play one minute of the match even if Mexico are winning 30-0,” Scolari said from beneath his moustache this week. But Portugal’s second string are no mugs. They’ll dress to impress, looking to claim a place in the second round starting eleven.

-Teams as follows:

Portugal:

    * 01 A Ricardo
* 13 L Miguel
* 16 A Ricardo Carvalho
* 05 F Meira
* 03 M Caneira
* 08 A Petit
* 18 N Maniche
* 19 C Tiago
* 07 L Figo
* 11 S Simao
* 23 H Postiga

Mexico: Mexico

    * 01 O Sanchez
* 14 G Pineda
* 04 R Marquez
* 05 R Osorio
* 03 C Salcido
* 22 F Rodriguez
* 08 P Pardo
* 23 L Perez
* 16 M Mendez
* 17 F Fonseca
* 19 O Bravo

-Portugal are through. A win or draw here sees them top group D. Mexico top the group with a win and go through in second place with a draw. If Mexico lose here, Angola can beat them to second place with a win over Iran (if they make up the goal differential).

Pregame: Who do you think will win?

Angola created a little drama by taking a lead in the second half, but Iran came back to end Angola’s second round hopes. You can read the blow-by-blow below and leave your thoughts and comments about the match and the teams.

Final: Iran 1-1 Angola

Full time The final whistle blows and the game ends as a draw. Angola was able to keep their round of 16 hopes alive but a 75th minute goal from Iran finished off the Palancas. Both teams gave a good effort but based on their play today they both deserve to go home. Thanks to Angola for giving me a team to support. I will now watch the rest of the tournament as a neutral fan. Thank you for joining the liveblog. Stop by again.

90+ Good free kick chance for Angola from just outside the box. It is weak and Iran’s keeper eats it up. That might be it for Angola. Their lack of offense rearing its ugly head again.

89:23 Portugal did their job beating Mexico. Angola is going to come up just short in their efforts. I’m bummed but proud that the team I blindly adopted back in December held their own this World Cup.

88:12 Your Group D finish if things stay this way will be: 1. Portugal 2. Mexico 3. Angola 4. Iran

87:02 I will hear this horns in my sleep tonight. Free kick to Angola from the left side of the area. It is punched away by the keeper and this looks increasingly like a draw.

86:21 Just a reminder that we are liveblogging every single game in this tournament so please stop by again. Your readership and comments are appreciated and help us all survived the not so interesting matches.

84:55 Ricardo forced to make another save. He has been Angola’s man of the tournament. Iran looks like it has come alive from a slumber. They are putting the screws on Angola.

83:21 Angola needs four goals in the next 7 minutes. Even my optimistic dreams don’t think that will happen. At least my beer is cold and the game has had its moments of interest.

82:32 For the sake on Angola fans I hope they at least come away with a tie. Would be devestating if they don’t get at least a point from this one.

81:02 Mexico desperately attacking in the other game. They must not know that Angola was scored upon. Angola not so desperate in the attack. Time for the guys to give it their all or they’ll be on the next flight home to Luanda.

80:12 Iran’s coach looking like a high school math teacher on the sideline. Angola’s coach looking constipated. The tale of two expressions.

79:23 Iran controlling the ball in their offensive end. Angola looking a bit deflated after letting in the goal. I know how they feel. For about 15 minutes there it was looking good but now the hope is beginning to fade.

76:59 Mexico looking more and more likely to dodge the bullet. They should send some flowers to Zandi for scoring that goal. Angola players pointing fingers at one another.

75:37 Poor making by Angola and Ferydoon Zandi gets the goal for Iran. No Angola players on the back post. Angola needs even more of a miracle now but will play on for the win.

75:02 GOALLLL! Iran heads in a corner kick and that kills me and kills Angola.

74:38 Iran still going through the motions but not looking very interested in getting an equalizer.

73:45 They showed the Iran player helping Jamba on with the captain’s armband. Das ist fair play.

72:34 Figueriedo out and Rui Marques so that means Mantorras won’t see action in this game. Not sure I agree with that move.

71:12 Still Portugal 2-1 in the other game which started this half about 6 minutes before this one. Right now Angola would lose out to Mexico in goal differential.

70:23 Regardless of the outcome, Angola has represented their country well this World Cup. It is remarkable they qualified and it is remarkable they are still alive with 20 minutes left in the final group play match.

69:23 Angola continues on the attack and Love gets his head on a cross but the Iran keeper is up to the task. Starting to see some life from Angola after all these minutes of offensive misery.

68:24 The drama of watching both games at the same time is second to none. This is going to be the best week of football all year.

67:30 Ze Kalanga shown a yellow. Angola won’t have any players for the next game, but at this point who cares?

65:56 The horns continue to blow but it is the Angola fans that are making the noise. Iran goes with a sub. Borhani in and Kaabi out.

65:15 Ze Kalanga taken down by the side of the area. Free kick to Angola. They looked energized by the goal. Figueriedo takes the kick. Nothing there.

63:45 Mexico playing a man down and losing to Portugal. Angola winning and hoping to score a couple more against Iran. Very few would have predicted this heading into the World Cup. Mexico has to be nervous now.

62:12 Angola fans going crazy in the fans. The Palancas are on the attack. I can hardly type I am so excited. Angola shot goes wide of goal.

61:12 Angola finally break through and boy how they did so. Great cross and Flavio knocks it into the goal. They still need another and some more help from Portugal but boy is this exciting now.

59:24 GOALLLL!!!! Flavio with a header into the goal. OH. MY. GOD.

58:45 If I were coach of Angola I would consider putting in Pele or Beckenbauer right about now.

57:15 Ricardo drilled by a shot and he is none too pleased with his slacker defenders in front of him.

57:12 Things continue to fall into place for Angola except for the fact they can’t score and they aren’t leading this game. A miracle is needs and it is needed soon.

55:16 Mendonca continues to try to shoot but he might as well quit while he is ahead. Mexico now playing a man down and are losing to Portugal 2-1.

54:23 The horns blow on. Does anyone actually think that sounds cool? Like a flock of geese on acid. Andranaik Teymourian shown a yellow for being a wanker.

53:34 Angola continuing to attack but the final third of the attack is simply brutal to watch. It isn’t easy being an Angola fan when they have the ball.

52:16 Mexico awarded a penalty kick and Bravo misses it. Angola stays alive!!!

51:05 Flavio in for Akwa who is done with a groin injury. Now Angola has Flavio and Love up front. great names, but are they great players? About time we see Mantorras too.

49:47 Akwa goes down and to the sideline with an injury. There goes Angola’s lone forward. Not that you’ll notice a difference.

49:14 Iran continues to play even though they should have been told by now that Angola needs to win. They are playing for the proverbial pride and so far Team Melli fans have to be moderately pleased.

48:02 Angola’s players also received 1,000 free roaming minutes on their mobile phones. I wonder if they budgeted to save some minutes for the next round.

47:12 Mendonca with a shot on the ground but it is just wide. Good start from the Palancas. Maybe this will be their half to record their first World Cup goal. Remember, each player gets a $5,000 for a goal. So far, no bonuses.

45:45 No changes in the second half but expect Mantorras to come on in the Angola attack soon.

45:01 We’re underway in the second half in Leipzig. The Portugal-Mexico match started about 6 minutes ago so Angola will know what they have to do by the end of the game. As it stands now, Portugal and Mexico would go through, but that could change if Angola somehow can figure out how to score in the next 45 minutes. Thanks for joining me. May your World Cup days be merry and bright.

Halftime After 2.5 games Angola has yet to score in the World Cup but they still could make the Round of 16. They’ll need to score and win in the second half and hope that Portugal can continue to beat Mexico. A lousy first half for both teams. I’m going to go scream in the hallway from 10 minutes and will be back for the second half. Go ahead and leave your thoughts on what you just saw (or didn’t see).

45+ Angola corner leads to a headache for the Iran keeper as he gets a tap on the head from Akwa in the air. Not a hard play but Ebrahim Mirzapour is looking like he got hit by a sledgehammer.

45+ Halftime in the Portugal-Mexico game. If only we were so lucky here. Finally a shot on goal from Angola. It is Love with the shot. My main man.

45+ Five minutes of injury time. Thank you, Loco and Mateus for delaying the restroom breaks for millions around the world. Maybe Angola’s offense will shine in added time.

45 Angola would score if those blasted horns would just shut up for a minute.

44:23 Mexico really turning it on against Portugal, but Iran and Angola are having a more peaceful affair. 2-1 Portugal and 0-0 in this game.

43:12 Iran showing that they are interested in winning. Not super interested, but interested enough to keep Angola from scoring.

42:31 Can Angola naturalize any forwards at halftime? They need some help. Brazil probably has a couple of players to spare.

41:12 Angola with its fifth corner kick. Maybe this time they will figure it all out. Maybe not.

39:45 Ricardo with another solid save. Say what you want about Angola, but Ricardo has been nothing short of great in this World Cup. He has faced a lot of shots and has only given up one goal.

38:34 Iran leads 62-38% in possession time yet Angola continues to keep the hope alive. Rasoul Paki Khatibi comes in for Hashemian for Iran as they decide not to score either.

37:36 If Angola can just get a goal before the half it will really put the pressure on Mexico. Suddenly the beer is talking and I’m not. Angola can’t score.

36:12 It is worth noting that Love is my favorite Angola player even though he never does much for the Palancas at forward. Yellow card shown to Mehrzad Madanchi, his second of the tournament. He will have to sit out the next game of his summer vacation.

35:12 If you are tuning into this game because you wanted to see goals, I suggest you flip over to the replay of the Argentina and Serbia match.

34:04 Angola has now gone all of my life without scoring a goal in the World Cup. Yet, they still are alive. Amazing.

32:57 Angola actually amounts an attack and Delgado wins the corner kick. Now is the time to work your magic but it is headed out by Iran. Seriously, now is the time to work your magic. And again it is headed out. Ok, last time guys. Work your magic. Headed out by Iran again. The magic needs to come right now. Punched away by the keeper. Can’t say we didn;t try.

31:12 Portugal beating Mexico 2-1 but no goals in this game as both teams fail to realize that one of the objects of the game is to put the ball in between those funny looking wooden things.

29:47 Akwa proving that just because you play forward doesn’t mean you have to shoot on goal. He needs some help out there. Angola should be allowed to play with a couple extra players.

28:32 Akwa misses from close in and Mexico just scored. Damn. Mexico +1 in goals and Angola -1.

27:45 Still shaking from that Iran corner. It just hit the Angola player who was guarding the post. Angola continues to show an ineptitude on offense that is now legendary.

26:45 Loco’s hair was not fixed by the medical team. Corner kick to Iran. My heart is pounding and my head hurts. Sweat pouring on the keyboard. Holy crap it is cleared off the line by Angola. Death flashed before my eyes.

25:34 Iran on the attack but called offside. Iran needs to read the memo that Angola has to win this game.

24:56 Loco back on for Angola. Mexico is now even on goals. Angola is -1. Angola still has some hope they just need to put the ball in the friggin’ net.

23:14 Terrible header by Iran. Portugal scores and Angola is getting oh so close to going through.

22:35 Hopefully the medical staff can do something about Loco’s hair while they work on his injury. Love on for Mateus. Love is the leading scorer in Angola’s league.

21:12 Loco carried off as well. Seriously guys, get your boots on. Angola is running out of players. Mateus and Loco both on stretchers and the horns blast on.

20:23 Loco down in pain. He needs to stand up so he can get his yellow card. The ref is like a fox looking at a hen.

19:42 Mateus taken off on a stretcher. That would be a big loss for Angola. He has played well on the wing. Maybe now they’ll put in a forward. Maybe now I’ll get another beer. My head is starting to hurt from all those bloody horns.

18:12 Starting to think that the Angola coach isn’t worthy of being called the Professor. His team needs a couple of goals and he sticks to a miserable 4-5-1. Corner to the Palancas as Mateus goes down hard.

17:17 Imagine the joy in Angola if they advance to the round of 16. For that reason alone I ask you to lace up your boots and play forward for the second half. Man it is painful watching their attack, or lack thereof.

15:59 If anyone wants to play forward for Angola, raise your hand. Akwa needs some help up front.

14:43 Figueriedo with a shot but it isn’t gonna happen. I’m more likely to score tonight in a German bar than the Palancas are in this game and I have no plans of going out tonight.

13:45 Ricardo does it again making a huge save against Zandi. His shot was straight on from close range but the Angola keeper was up to the task. Ricardo needs to find a club team. He is good.

12:34 Angola has only given up one goal in the tournament. Much like they did in qualifying, they have kept the ball out of the net. Today Iran hasn’t challenged. Masoud Shojaei on for the dude who hurt his groin.

11:23 If you ever want to go to the World Cup, I recommend showing up for the Iran vs. Angola match. Lots of empty seats. Mateus gets off a shot for Angola but you knew all along that wasn’t going in.

10:34 Angola in its offensive end but Iran’s defense is staying well organized. If I were to bet, these teams might play six games and never score.

9:03 Ok, I got a beer just to make those of you at work jealous. Thanks for talking some sense into me. Still no score or action.

8:20 I’ve seen enough groins to last me a lifetime. Can’t these players hurt something different? Crotch shots are so cliche.

8:04 Iran rolling the ball around and looking mildly interested in playing attack. Angola’s defense is up to the task. Mohamed Nosrati on the ground looking like death is near. He’ll be ok.

6:56 To win, you need to score and Angola has been unable to do this. I can’t figure out why they are sticking with a 4-5-1 with Akwa as the lone striker. This is not an offensive formation. So far no offense from either team.

5:35 The Angola bench is aware of the score in the other game. Angola still needs to win but now the goal difference has been cut. It is early but things could be breaking Angola’s way.

4:58 Portugal just scored so Angola gets a lot of hope. They need Mexico to lose.

3:56 There are a lot of empty seats in the stands but the people who are there are blowing horns like crazy. I might go mental if I have to hear this for 90 minutes. Another Angola foul. Not much action so far.

2:45 I am liveblogging this game without a beer. That is like walking into church with no clothes. Early foul on Angola gives Iran a free kick from the left side. It is headed away.

1:45 Aussie ref Mark Shield in charge of this game. Let’s hope he leaves the cards in the back pocket and lets the teams play.

1:02 Ricardo grabs a weak Iran shot. The shadow is really bad in this one so forgive me if my eyes go crazy during this match.

:12 Beckenbauer at the other game. Boy is he going to regret missing Angola play Iran.

Kickoff We are underway from Leipzig where Angola and Iran play the final match of Group D. Angola still has hopes of advancing. Iran is out to have a good game before flying home. Thanks for joining me. Your comments are always appreciated. Keep them clean, have fun and love one another. Remember you can also flip back and forth between liveblogs as Daryl is blogging the Portugal-Mexico match right now too.

4 minute countdown: Angola’s turn to sing and be proud. Simply a great story seeing this country make the World Cup. The players look nervous but are able to muster up the nerve to sing along. It is an upbeat anthem. Me like.

5 minute countdown: Iran’s anthem is played. The players sing. It is a nice tune and the Iran fans make some noise when it comes to an end.

6 minute countdown: I have both televisions set up and will be trying to keep an eye on the Portugal-Mexico game since it does hold a lot of importance to Angola. Iran is wearing white shirts and shorts. Angola is adorned in red, yellow and black.

8 minute countdown: The players from both teams are lined up in the tunnel. That means a game is going to be played soon. No wonder I like this moment so much. The little kids have their hands out and the players take a hold. Hand holding has never looked better. The Angola fans are on their feet. The Iran fans are singing. The flags are out on the pitch. We are close to the final clash in Group D.

10 minute countdown: Can’t quite tell from the camera angle but it looks like this game might see the return of the dreaded shadow. I’m guessing the majority of the world will be watching the Mexico-Portugal match anyway, but it will be unfortunate if the hearty souls who follow Iran and Angola have our retinas are fried trying to see the ball during this game.

15 minute countdown: It is a bit of a hazy summer day in Germany. The game is being played in Leipzig which isn’t too far from where I am in Berlin. It is warm but shouldn’t really impact either team since they are both used to playing in heat. It is nearly a perfect weather day to liveblog two games, so I think I will.

20 minute countdown: German television showing nothing but Portugal-Mexico previews. Hey guys, there is another game today :-)! On a bright note, Boris Becker continues to look great as a studio analyst. What a life that guy must lead these days.

25 minute countdown: Bad news for Angola fans. Portugal’s coach Big Phil is planning on resting a good number of his starters against Mexico. He seems less than concerned with Portugal getting a win, something Angola desperately needs. I can’t fault Big Phil for his decision but it would have been nice to see Mexico and Portugal go toe-to-toe.

30 minute countdown: I literally just received an email alerting me that my Angola jersey has been shipped to my home. Too bad my home is nowhere near my present location in Berlin. I guess I can wear it after the Palancas win the World Cup, but for now I must get by wearing an Angola flag.

35 minute countdown: Here are the starting lineups. Angola continuing to go with a 4-5-1. Can’t explain that considering they need goals more than I need a day off from typing non stop and, believe me, my fingers could use some rest. But alas, I will be liveblogging two games today. I got the short end of the straw again and will do the Ivory Coast – Serbia and Montengro farewell game tonight.

Angola: Ricardo, Jamaba, Kali, Miloy, Figeuriedo, Akwa, Mateus, Mendonca, Ze Kalanga, Loco Delgado

Iran: Mirzapour, Mahdavakia, Bakhtiarizadeh, Rezaei, Zandi, Hashemian, Daei, Kabei, Teymourian, Nosrati, Madanchi

40 minute countdown: Iran is a dangerous team today. They have been eliminated from the World Cup and have no pressure entering this game. In 1998, Iran was in a similiar position and defeated the United States in the third game of the first round. Iran has looked ok at times in this tournament but has shown a tendency to fade toward the end of matches.

50 minute countdown: This is the biggest game for Angola since I became a die hard supporter way back in December. They have gone two games without scoring a goal. They’ll need to score today if they want to keep their slim hopes alive for a spot in the round of 16. Angola needs to win and to have Portugal defeat Mexico. They also need to come up with a better goal differential. Currently they are -1 and Mexico is +2.

Pregame: Can Angola pull off the miracle and advance or will Iran ruin the party?

Another day, another four matches. That is what is known as World Cup bliss. We close out the action in Groups C & D. Three of the four spots in the round of 16 have been filled and the teams today will be jockeying to see who will play one another in the knockout stage. Here’s a rundown of what is at stake for each of the teams today.

Group C

Argentina and Netherlands are both through. The winner of their match will win Group C and play the second place finisher from Group D. Argentina has a clear goal differential advantage so a tie will also give them top billing in the group.

Serbia and Montenegro and Ivory Coast have both been eliminated and are playing for no other reason then because they have to. Poor Chris drew the short end of the stick and he will be liveblogging that one.

Group D

Portugal is through to the next round and there is nothing that can be done today to change that fact. Portugal will win the group with a win or draw against Mexico. Either way, they are going to play either Argentina or Netherlands next round.

Mexico can punch their ticket to the round of 16 with a win or draw against Portugal. El Tri can also advance if Angola loses or draws against Iran. With a win against Portugal they win the group and a case of Turtle Wax.

Angola is still mathematically alive but will need some help. First, the Palancas need to beat Iran. Next they need Portugal to beat Iran. Finally they need to have a better goal differential than Mexico. Currently they are -1 and Mexico is +2.

Iran is going home no matter what. Thanks for showing up. See you again in 2010.

Predictions

Group C
1. Argentina
2. Netherlands

Group D
1. Portugal
2. Mexico

Again, I am going with the favorites. I’ve learned my lessons.

What do you think will be the outcome from today’s matches?

Frequent readers of World Cup Blog know that Angola is my adopted team this competition. One of the reasons why I chose to back the Palancas Negras way back in December is because of the names of their players. I have a thing for names and this World Cup I have latched onto some favorites. Perhaps the reason why is because my own name is so dull. I have name envy.

Like many of you, I loved it when I heard that Brazil had a player named Fred. A classic, if understated name if there ever was one.

I also can’t get enough of Croatia’s Jerko Leko and Togo’s Razak Pimpong. These names might sound normal in their native languages but in English they are elicit a smile, if not a chuckle.

But it is the names of the Angola players that have really done it for me. Love, Loco, Jamaba, Flavio, Lama… the list goes on and one. This article does a nice job of explaining the origins of many of their nicknames.

My favorite is Love who was given his name because of his close relationship with his mother. I can’t think of too many athletes in too many countries who would willingly accept a nickname that acknowledges that they are a momma’s boy.

Of course, I also can’t think of too many bloggers who would willingly call themselves “Green Bean,” which is roughly how my name translates in Russian.

Portugal took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute after a goal by Deco, and a penalty kick by Cristiano Ronaldo put the game away in the 89th minute. Portugal is going through and Iran is headed home, and now we can all go about figuring out the various ways that Angola can still make it through to the second round.

Final: Portugal 2-0 Iran

95:15 A goal for Portugal called offsides a few seconds before time runs out.

94:05 Portugal almost gets another one off the goal kick is headed downfield and a portugal player takes a pass/shot that goes just wide.
93:00 Obligatory close up shot of the adidas ball disappearing on the goal kick.

92:12 Corner for Iran!

91:01 Corner for Portugal. Iran may go this entire game without one.

90:00 5 minutes of injury time.

87:55 Ronaldo just misses on a bending free kick.

87:32 He’s booked as he limps off the field.

85:04 GOLMOHAMMADI down with his hand on his face and the stretcher next to him. I can’t tell what is hurt after watching the replay.

83:48 The facial welt from Figo’s mid-air collision seems to be growing by the minute.

82:00 Good to see this kind of result after Portugal outplayed Iran all game long.

80:15 Looks like Iran won’t be heading through the first round.

79:32 Penalty’s good, goal Portugal.

78:21 Figo is tripped up in the goal box and Ronaldo is taking the Penalty kick

77:07 Cross from the right to an Iran forward looks good headed toward the goal but the goalie’s there.

75:47 Iran’s free kick is sent off the two man wall and after checking for a bloody nose play resumes.

73:57 Ronaldo breaks out of two defenders but can’t quite get the pass through.

72:38 Kaebi booked for tripping Ronaldo on the sideline. Good call.

71:25 “Ecken” means “corner” in German (I think) and Portugal is leading in that category 10-0.

70:20 Corner for portugal taken short and then taken away by Iran who again doesn’t get past midfield.

68:38 Iran’s Khatibi gets open about four feet in front of the net and beats the goalie but sends the ball wide. Iran may not get another chance like that.

67:11 Iran’s Hashemian with a nice shot from long distance, no goal.

65:31 Four or five subs between both teams, I can’t keep up with everyone but Petit for Portugal in for Maniche.

64:39 I just want to say that that was kind of a dive by Ronaldo and it was kind of late.

63:45 Deco connects from just outside the goal box, blowing the ball past the goalie on the left post.

62:31 Goal Portugal!

60:08 Figo gets a shot through but the save is a foregone conclusion. Iran counterattack gets tripped up and Portugal’s Costinha gets booked.

58:12 Portugal has run out of ideas. Iran really didn’t have any to begin with and everybody seems happy to hang around midfield.

55:45 Mahvadikia beats one guy all by himself but gets caught up in the remaining three. On the counterattack, Iran once again just kinds of runs out of ideas after midfield.

55:02 Ronaldo beats his man one on one and makes the goalie dive to the post. Solid shot.

52:45 Fancy behind the back, back heel pass goes out, but it wasn’t a terrible idea.

51:42 Portugal one touching around midfield, I’m still thinking they’re just trying to make Iran run and wear them out.

50:20 Irn on the counter attack can’t seem to get organized or any kind of spacing.

45:38 Portugal looks like they’ve got a more refined plan for the half. Yellow card for Deco after what looks like a replay of the Figo incident.

45:01 I’m going to (try to) lay off the Ronaldo comments for the half.

Halftime: 45 minutes, no goals, a foot to Figo’s face and a bunch of unnecessary dancing around the ball. Portugal should be thrashing this Iran team but can’t seem to get anything through.

47:04 Off the scale Ronaldo pout. That brings it up to like a 9.7 on the scale.

45:00 Ronaldo watches too many Nike commercials.

43:50 Miguel back on, makes a run for the goal on the right side and gets it under the goalie, who deflects it just wide of the goal. Miguel looks fine now.

41:45 Miguel gets a knock to the head and he’s down for a minute. He looks woozy and doesn’t sem to know where he is. Incidental contact.

40:30 Iran stays onsides in an attack but in doing so forfeits their advantage. They’re still looking for that first corner kick.

38:50 Ronaldo gets knocked down and the camera kindly cuts away. I will say, he’s always around the ball and making things happen.

37:50 Iran puts some passes together but at the end the attack just kind of runs out of gas.

36:11 Figo takes a boot to the nose and on the replay of Ronaldo’s barely missed shot we actually see more of a grimace. Amazing.

34:45 Ron. almost puts it in but misses by about 4 inches wide right. Figo catches a boot in the face a few seconds later and he’s still down.

34:05 Ronaldo’s header is nice to the far post but an Iran player is there with his chest.

33:24 Portugal’s leading on corner’s 7-0

32:18 Ronaldo’s dancing around the ball… superfluous or unnecessary?

31:11 The crowd cheers Madanchi knocking Ronaldo down but Madanchi still gets the yellow card.

30:00 Iran goes offsides then sends the ball off the left post.

29:07 Figo’s corner is sent in the direction of the goal after a header, stupid camera angles make it look like it went in but it was wide right.

27:01 Figo dancing around the ball on the sideline just looks so much more productive.

25:00 Portugal keeps pushing the ball up the right side, probably to avoid the locker room whining because you know who plays on that side.

24:07 That was reminiscent of the great Angola performance last night, and wouldn’t you know it, both keepers are named Ricardo.

23:30 Free kick for Iran is almost sent into the net off a header, goalie gets there first.

20:30 Deco sends a pass a little too far, brings the goalie out and it looked like prime time for a Portugal goal.

19:10 Iran yellow card for Nekounam. That’s his second of the first round, so he’s out against Angola.

18:28 Iran’s 20 minute fitness collapse may be coming up.

17:01 C Ronaldo on camera pout count: 3.

15:34 Maniche is going to score from outside of 30 m tonight, another deflected strike off a set piece.

13:20 Iran gets a perfect pass over the top of the defense and for a moment has a clear path. He has to slow up though and gets nothing.

11:44 Deco with a nice shot on goal that turns into a corner for Portugal.

10:28 Ok, nice play Cristiano, turned the corner around the defense and put it right in front of the goal. If only Portugal had better players to finish those godsent passes.

7:00 Ronaldo moves for position against a defender during a corner, throws his hands in the air because the guy is getting in his way. Ref comes over, “He spent over $90 on that haircut, don’t mess it up!”

6:40 Looks like Iran’s pacing themselves by abandoning the ball somewhere near midfield. Probably smart after the fitness levels demonstrated.

5:17 Long shot attempt by Maniche.

4:40 Mostly midfield play so far after that first Portugal chance about 3o seconds into the game.

3:07 We’ve gotten several games so far with a goal in the first four minutes, doesn’t look like this is going to me one of them. Iran keeping a slow pace.

01:00 Figo with some fancy sideline footwork, ends up kicking the ball out and falling down. He’s slow getting up, looks like he could have used that pregame carpet as a mat.

00:23 We’re back from commercial and it seems we missed the kick-off and the first few seconds. Almost missed Portugal goal too but it didn’t quite go through.

Iran somehow escaped from the last game with only one yellow card.

Iran wins the award for the best pre game gifts. Another Persian carpet.

First pout comes before the anthem: C. Ronaldo’s pouting because the kid walking him out is better looking than him.

So if you were Iran’s coach and your team had demonstrated an utter lack of fitness last game, how would you have reacted? Run your team into the ground between games? Let them rest?

All of the teams are still mathematically alive, but if Iran loses this game they’re done. Angola can still qualify if they can win a game and Mexico can lose… and there are about 100 different variations of this scenario that can still play out.

If anyone understands the possible outcomes of this group based on this game, I’d like to see you try to explain it in the comments.

45 minutes to kick off, it’s cloudy out, so I’m predicting at least a 9.5 on the C. Ronaldo pout meter today.

Pregame: Should be an interesting match. Who do you think will win?

Angola and Mexico went toe-to-toe and after 90 minutes of play neither side scored. It was a very good effort for the African debutants who keep their slim hopes alive for the second round. Read the play-by-play below and leave your thoughts about the match.

Final: Mexico 0-0 Angola

Full time That’s it. Angola comes away with a 0-0 win against Mexico. The game was not the best played of the tournament but playing a man down for the final 13 minutes Angola showed a lot of heart. Angola’s keeper Ricardo is today’s hero. He was outstanding for the Palancas Negras. Mexico is still in decent position to advance but will have some work left against Portugal.

90+ Angola pushes forward towards the corner. Time continues to tick in their favor. Angola crowd going nuts. I’m going nuts.

90:00 Can the minnows from Africa hold on for three minutes of added time or will Mexico make it happen? Don’t close your eyes.

89:00 Angola defense hurting themselves with turnovers. Mexico looking for the kill but are unable to get the job done. For a somewhat poorly played scoreless game this has turned out to be quite fun.

87:46 Marquez with a blast and Ricardo stretches out to save it. He is the hero of the match. Mexico with another great chance that goes just wide. Wow, this one is hurting my heart.

86:35 Angola running out of energy but trying to dig deep to hold on. Mexico preparing to make a few final pushes forward to steal a late game win.

85:19 Ricardo shown a yellow for wasting time. Angola counting down every last second trying to get a point.

84:45 Mexico corner kick after a nifty bit of footwork by Fonseca in the box. It is blown dead and Angola is spared for another few seconds.

84:02 This reminds me a lot of the Sweden and Trinidad game with a minnow trying to earn a 0-0 win.

82:43 Marcos Miloy on for Ze Kalanga. Angola making a defensive sub to try to hang on. My heart is racing.

82:15 Fonseca with the half volley but it is off the mark. He was in position but couldn’t get the job down. Mexico smells blood.

80:57 Angola holding onto the ball despite being a man down. Suddenly their offense has picked up but the question is whether they can withstand a final Mexico push.

80:00 Can Angola hold on a man down for the next ten minutes? Oh the drama of World Cup footie.

78:36 Ze Kalanga booked for a hand ball. His second yellow and he is sent off. That was a stupid play. Angola now down to 10 men.

78:15 Much discussion in the WCB headquarters about how pretty Rafa Marquez looks tonight. His ponytail is shiny and looking good. Morales in for Mexico.

76:45 Loco looks like he wasn’t built right. His arms and legs move out of place. He is having a decent game bad hair notwithstanding.

75:03 Mexico continues to attack as they have started to control the game the past 10 minutes.

73:57 Mexico corner caught by Ricardo. We will all name our kids after Ricardo if Angola wins this one.

73:05 Franco off and Fonseca in for Mexico as they try to beef up their frontline for the final 20.

72:03 Rui Marques in for Figueriedo. Another good sub from the Professor on the Angola bench.

71:00 Angola still managing to keep the clean sheet but needs more from its attack. Neutral fans starting to get behind Angola. Welcome to the bandwagon my friends. I’ve been driving it since December.

69:45 Mexico with a free kick after a silly fall from Figueriedo. The ball is spotting about 40 out. It chips away harmlessly. Angola still holds on.

68:17 Mexico with another great chance on a corner but no goal. Another corner for El Tri and it bounces away. Wow, this is getting to be dramatic.

67:28 Mantorras in for Mateus. Good sub for Angola as they look to get their first World Cup goal.

67:15 Maybe there is something to this Angola keeper not playing for a club team. He can expend all his energy for Angola.

65:57 Bravo with a point blank shot that Ricardo eats up. He should have scored on that one. Ricardo again proving to be a champion.

64:45 Are you people at work having fun? Tell me what you do for a living. It must be more entertaining then some of these matches. Ricardo with another neat grab.

62:57 Mexico shouldn’t be confused with Argentina in this match. They look pretty average.

61:46 If any of you own the same tie as the Mexico coach please do yourself a favor and burn it now. Still scoreless with both sides playing ping pong in the middle of the field.

60:34 Angola continuing to give Mexico a very good game. It could go either way at this point. Akwa needs more help at forward for Angola though. But I’m not a coach so what do I know?

59:56 Public service announcement: I’m never leaving my computer ever again and we’ll be liveblogging every game this tournament so please stop by again. Thank you.

58:45 Angola coach Goncalves looks like a thinner George Forman. I wonder if they have George Forman grills in Luanda.

57:35 Jamba down for Angola. He will live. Pretty amazing to watch this cat Ricardo in goal for Angola. he doesn’t even play for a club team but he should. He is having a great World Cup.

55:46 That was Franco with the chance for Mexico and Ricardo comes up huge in goal for Angola.

54:46 António Mendonca with a long shot on goal. On the other end Ricardo with a great save. Wow, excellent chances for both teams.

53:48 Whoever the fan is who brought the horn to the match and insists on blowing it non stop for 90 minutes need to be fed to the Polish hooligans.

52:43 Mexico coach looking more slovenly than ever on the bench. Still no sign of him smoking. Perhaps he took my advice and went on the nicotine patch.

51:04 Ricardo comes out to take in the cross. What would Jesus do? Will find out now that Jesus Arellano is in.

50:56 More rugged play from both sides. This one is a bit ugly but it is the World Cup and it is football so it is mandatory that we continue to watch.

49:34 Ze Kalanga gets a yellow for Marquez being a wimp.

49:04 Marquez slots it into the box and it is a Mexico corner. Headed away by the Palancas and Angola heads the other way where they will continue to do nothing.

47:04 Mexico missing Jared Borgetti in their attack. He wasn’t incredible versus Iran but he brings something that the rest of their forwards doesn’t have.

46:30 So if Angola ties would that be considered a win? I would think so, but we still have a lot of time left before we can really talk about that.

45:15 No changes for either side as we are stuck with same 22 that brought us that lackluster first half.

45:01 The second half is underway in Hanover. Angola is still looking for their first World Cup goal. Mexico looking to pick up an expected three points. I have decided to stick with Hefe for this half since it proved to be a decent luck charm for Angola in the first half. Thanks for stopping by and for making the World Cup so much fun for all of us. Let’s keep the vibes good and hopefully enjoy a more interesting display of football than we saw in the first half.

Halftime Mexico with the better chances but Angola played them fairly even for the first 45 minutes. I’m off to put some magic spray on my fingers. Go ahead and leave your thoughts on the first half and any predictions you might have for the next 45.

44:02 Franco with a point blank chance in the box and Ricardo makes a huge save to keep it scoreless.

43:19 André Macanga booked for dissent. Always respect the ref even when he is wrong.

43:15 For you halftime entertainment I will not be blogging but I will be sticking my fingers in ice. Thanks again for joining me. Your comments keep me going. Along with copious amounts of substances.

41:15 A noticeable absence of yellow cards in this game. This is a welcome change from the games earlier today. Unfortunately there is also a noticeable absence of goal scoring chances.

40:45 The name Gerardo Torrado rolls off your lips even if you are a German commentator.

39:45 Mexico can’t be too pleased with this half. Theu aren’t playing especially well and each passing minute gives Angola hope.

38:03 Sanchez has a failure to communicate and he gives the ball back to the Palancas. Loco getting more camera time. That is really unneccessary. Corner Angola and more of nothing.

36:45 The crowd sounds dead in Hanover. The teams have sucked the life out of this game faster than I am sucking down cold ones.

35:34 Franco falls down again. I hope both teams have fresh uniforms for the second half. They are accumulating grass stains.

34:02 Angola with the corner kick. Sanchez bats it away. This game has been fairly even to this point with Mexico having the better chances but the run of play about even.

32:56 Ricardo flies to knock the ball down and almost gives up a rebound to Mexico. Lucky to not give up a goal on that one. Still 0-0

31:02 Loco living up to his name with some funky moves. Angola gets a direct kick after António Mendonca hits the ground. 10 yards outside the area. Akwa gets a head on it but it goes too high.

30:00 Angola has now gone 120 minutes without a goal. I have now liveblogged a 120 straight minutes. Something has to give.

28:08 I think I got spoiled with all those goals earlier today. This one is losing my interest a bit and I am a die hard Angola fan.

27:03 Mexico keeper Oswaldo Sanchez hanging on the crossbar for no reason. I think he is bored. Good on him for playing after the death of his father last week.

25:35 Angola’s free kick is blasted over the goal by Mendoca and we remain scoreless. Mexico got off to a slow start against Iran but then turned it on. Will they do the same here?

24:45 Both teams playing a bit unsettled. Most of the play is in the middle of the field with the attacks breaking down. Loco down on the ground earning Angola a free kick.

23:15 Mateus gets a shot off for Angola but again there is nothing more that needs to be said. This Hefe does taste much better than the last beer.

22:32 Angola with the corner kick and it doesn’t happen. They control the ball and then lose it. Figueiredo gets off a shot and blasts it high. Good effort mate.

21:15 Figueiredo hurt and walks it off. I am sensing a pattern here. Both these teams need to suck it up and start playing a little football.

20:15 Angola brings it forward but you get the sense it is kind of pointless without more support up front for Akwa. Their coach is named the Professor so I can’t question his smarts. I have a few nicknames of my own but none are appropriate for a family friendly liveblog.

17:52 Franco is suddenly going to live again so Mr. and Mrs. Franco need not worry about their son’s health.

16:58 Angola still looking for their first ever World Cup goal. Franco on the ground for Mexico. The stretcher carriers are getting a workout in this match. Hope they have enough magic spray on hand for this one.

16:03 Mexico’s Mendez falls down and earns another direct kick from close in. Mexico getting plenty of opportunities to practice their set pieces. This one is knocked down by Ricardo and cleared away.

13:45 Angola dodging some bullets with Mexico looking very composed in the attack. Loco needs to spend more time worrying about his man than showing off his wonderful hair. Still no score.

13:08 Delgado shown a yellow by the ref from Singapore. Mexico with the direct kick that hits the post but does not go in.

12:18 Failed to mention I chose a Hefeweizen for this match. For those of you working, it is Friday so go ahead to crack one open at your desk.

11:17 Fairly evenly played game thus far with Mexico having the better chances. Mexico coach Lavolpe looks like a completely unkept beach bum on the sideline. I love that guy.

9:02 First shot of the Loco hair. I will never get tired of seeing the half shaved head with the flopping dreadlocks in the front. Franco down on the ground earning Mexico another free kick.

7:57 Ze Kalanga down again for Angola and decides to ride the stretcher this time. He looks worse than someone liveblogging back-to-back games.

7:46 I think I will permanately have the sound of horns in my brain after watching every game this World Cup. Beats having German music stuck in your head. I heard some German death metal today at a cafe and it was truly scary.

6:17 Angola looking more settled than they did last game. I can’t blame them for nerves. I was nervous for them too. Mexico playing some nice combination ball. Still no score.

4:21 Franco brought down by Figueriedo. Mexico spending most of the time on the ground. Free kick from far out goes harmlessly to Ricardo.

2:51 Ze Kalanga down on the pitch after getting elbowed in the midsection. The stretcher is declined as he walks that one off.

2:32 Franco brough down by Jamba whose name is also awesome. No yellow card shown yet which is a positive sign in this tournament.

0:48 I take that back. Carlos Salcido blasts a long shot that goes just over the bar. The fans are chanting “Mexico”.

0:25 Both keepers get a touch on the ball. Already a better start for Angola.

Kickoff: We are underway in Hanover as Angola takes on Mexico. El Tri is on top of the group with three points while Angola enters with no points. Thanks for stopping by and please leave your thoughts and comments as we move along through the 90. Keep it clean, have fun and love one another. Let’s hope this is a great game.

4 minute countdown: It is Angola’s turn to stand and sing. More pomp and circumstance. If I knew the words I would sing along. I’m fired up and ready to blog my fingers off. Thanks for joining us for this Group D match, the final game of the day.

6 minute countdown: The Mexico anthem is played. It is a long one. A bit dramatic but quality. The players have to hold their arms on their chests for a long time. That looks exhausting. Great moment for all of Mexico. I love the anthems.

8 minute countdown: Akwa having a nice converation with the kid whose hand he is holding. That was awfully cute.

9 minute countdown: The teams are getting set to lineup in the tunnel. Raf Marquez leads his men out of their locker room. Akwa does the same for Angola. Mexico wearing white tops and green shorts. Angola decked out in red shirts and black shorts. Love the yellow and red socks that Angola wears.

12 minute countdown: Anyone care to wager how many times we’ll see Mexico coach Lavolpe with a smoke on the sideline?

15 minute countdown: The best name on either roster belongs to Angola forward Love Cabungula. Every World Cup team needs a little love.

18 minute countdown: German television showing pictures of kids in Angola playing footie on the beach. I can only imagine the excitement they are feeling there as they watch their national team playing on the world’s largest stage. Win, lose or draw Angola’s presence in this tournament is a wonderful story.

20 minute countdown: The rain has cooled things down enough in Berlin for me to wear my Angola flag like a cape without sweating. For some reason I also have a Nigeria kit on. It is as close to Mexico colors as I could find in my closet. Here’s hoping that the Group D games are exciting this go around.

25 minute countdown: Just to prove that I am not a complete homer for Angola, I ate a burrito tonight. Not too bad considering it was from a shop in East Berlin. I hope your food is equally tasty wherever you may be in the world. Will provide a beer update closer to the game once I choose my brew of choice. It won’t be Bittburger. Not impressed. 30,000 Mexicans in Hanover. Very impressive showing considering the distance they must travel to come to Germany.

30 minute countdown: I wish Maradona was at every game instead of Beckenbauer. He is awesome to watch in the stands. One thing to watch in this upcoming game is the first 20 minutes. Angola was jumped on early against Portugal and will need to avoid falling behind against Mexico. The Palancas were one of the lowest scoring teams in African qualifying.

40 minute countdown: Hooray my food has arrived. I should have the energy now to LiveBlog back-to-back games. Worth noting that Mexico forward Jared Borgetti is not playing in this game and Angola coach Goncalves is sticking to his guns by playing a 4-5-1 despite calls for another forward to help out Akwa.

50 minute countdown: I look forward to having you join me for this one. We’ve seen nine goals thus far today and a couple of entertaining games. Let’s hope Mexico and Angola treat us to another good match.

Pregame: How much will my beloved Angola win by? 8-0? 27-0? Or will Mexico come out on top?

Indeed. It is great to see that FIFA has its priorities in order, well, as long as there isn’t a tobacco company sponsoring the tournament. If that were the case, FIFA would probably make the players smoke World Cup brand™ cigarettes while they play.

Final: Portugal 1-0 Angola

– Goal Pauleta (4 min)

Full time Portugal comes away with a victory after an early goal from Pauleta. It is three points for the favorites, but credit goes to Angola for hanging in there and making a game of it in their World Cup debut.

91:36 Maniche with a bomb that is deflected over the crossbar by Ricardo. Heck of a match for the Angola keeper.

90:50 One last shot of Ronaldo pouting on the bench. Unofficially we have him at 32 pouts for the game.

90:00 3 minutes extra time. My heart is pounding. Come on lads.

88:37 Mateus with a shot on goal for Angola. Crowd is on its feet imploring the underdog. The final two minutes are going to be something.

88:03 Portugal might come away with three points but should they be pleased with the way they played? Hard to say. They have been very inconsistent.

87:15 Angola on the attack. Mantorras is one big boy. Angola just can’t string it together in the final third.

85:03 When you say Palancas Negras with a German accent it sounds really, really funny. Don’t mention the war.

83:52 Just to be clear I meant Figo might not be able to get up from the ground. With Viagra these days the other thing is possible no matter your age.

83:03 Figo spends a lot of time on the ground. At his age he might not be able to get up. Portugal header goes over the bar.

81:35 Portugal sub. Thiago out and Viana in. Thiago has a serious farmer’s tan.

80:46 Angola needs to go balls out this final ten minutes. It does them no good to lose by a goal. Might as well push forward and try to get a point out of this.

79:04 Valente shown a yellow card for Portugal. Figueriedo comes off for Angola. Miloy on as Angola makes its last sub.

78:45 Big round of applause to Angola for keeping this one interesting. They could have been crushed early on but they still could come away with something here if Portugal isn’t careful.

77:03 I commented yesterday that Prince William doesn’t ever sweat. Figo, on the other hand, is always sweating. Might have some kind of disorder. Hell of a player, sweat and all.

75:48 Big Phil pacing on the Portugal sideline. He has one of the great faces in sport. It looks like he is made of plastic. Great coach. Mad love for Big Phil.

74:35 The rest of the World Cup Blog staff are laughing at me as I swear at the tv. Sorry Portugal fans, but I am pulling hard for an Angola goal.

72:45 A shot in the crowd of a dude wearing a condom on his head. This is Germany and there are lots of brothels, but you don’t need to wear protection at the stadium.

71:59 Figo loses a boot and Nike smiles. That will be in the next advert.

71:35 Reports from Angola say that people there are begging their team to score a goal. Petit out and Maniche in for Portugal.

70:03 Angola’s new strategy is to boot and chase.

68:50 Loco with a shot that lives up to his name. Edson in, Ze Kalanga out for Angola. Edson is one of the least likeable players on Angola’s roster. Watch him score.

68:29 I get the feeling Angola is only going to score off a Portugal mistake or a lucky goal. 20 more minutes for a hero to emerge. If a Palancas scores he’ll get $5,000. That goes a long way in Luanda.

65:56 Miguel is having a solid game on the wing for Portugal. Figo starting to show his age some in the midfield. I expect to see a few more subs soon. A lot of tired players out there.

64:35 Would never have guessed that Angola would still be in this one after the dreadful start. Still have hope that we might see a draw. I think the beer is going to my head.

62:40 Portugal crowd trying to lift their team. Both sides look a little winded. I can relate. This liveblogging is draining work.

60:57 Thiago with the shot and he is denied by Ricardo. The Angola keeper is keeping his team in the game. Amazing that he doesn’t play for any club teams. My men’s team could use him.

60:22 Great shot of Ronaldo pouting on the bench. The pouting meter is off the charts.

58:34 Mantorras comes on for Akwa. Mantorras is one of the classiest players on the Angola roster. This is a great move by the Professor. Costinha in for Ronaldo for Portugal. Defensive move from Scolari. Have fun pouting on the bench Ronnie.

57:46 Ricardo with the save on the Pauleta shot. Ricardo is the new Shaka Hislop. If Trini can do it, why not Angola?

56:15 Portugal playing ping pong with one corner kick after another. Hey, Angola has gone 53 minutes without giving up a goal. I feel good about that. We just need to put one in. Come on lads.

55:03 If Angola comes back to get a point I will cut my hair in the “Loco”.

53:45 The game is starting to get bogged down in the middle third of the pitch. Portugal looks content to be up by one. Angola looks like it is having a hard time in the attack.

52:14 Portugal has controlled this game but I would hardly say they have been impressive. What is impressive is the bandage over Andre’s eye for Angola. Looks like it is holding his head together.

50:58 Angola started to put the cleats in against Portugal. When in doubt, kick them in the shins. That’s what my dad always used to say. Yellow card to Andre.

49:02 Starting to wonder why I adopted Angola for this World Cup. Is it too late to say my favorite team is Brazil?

48:29 Figuerido in Angola’s midfield is truly abysmal. He spent the first three years living in Angola before moving to Portugal. I think he is confused what country he is playing for tonight.

46:33 Do you suppose that Angola player asked his barber to give him a “Loco” haircut. Looks like it is about half done. Kids, please don’t follow Loco’s lead. Get a full haircut.

45:01 The second half is underway in Cologne. Will Angola shock the world and get a result or will this be Portugal’s night? We shall see. We’ll also see C. Ronaldo pout for another 45 min. Can you imagine the look on his face if he gives up an own goal? Would be priceless.

End of Halftime I have shed the flag cape and re-filled the beer mug. I’m good to go for another 45 minutes. Thank you all for joining me and for your comments. You are all much more amusing than I could ever dream to be. Here’s hoping for a great second half.

Halftime After a fast start from Portugal, the Palancas Negras of Angola settled things down a bit. This game is still up in the air, although Portugal looks like the far superior team. I’m going to go refill the beer mug and will be back right before the second half. What are your thoughts thus far? Does my beloved Angola have a shot of coming away with a point or is this one already over?

44:21 Ronaldo fires another shot on goal but he won’t score as long as he has that kit on. Ricardo nice save for Angola. Good save from a guy who doesn’t even play for a club team. He shares that in common with me.

42:17 Andre drills a shot on the Portugal goal and earns Angola a corner. Nothing comes out of it but Angola has shown some signs of life. As long as it is a one goal game anything could happen, right?

41:45 Both teams look a little tired now. I can relate. Drinking beer and watching football all day long is exhausting. Hey kids, after tonight’s game we are 1/8 of the way through the World Cup. Going by too fast.

40:12 It must be fun to be in the Portugal midfield right now. They are getting no pressure on the ball and you get to be near the pretty boy C. Ronaldo. His mere presence makes everyone else beautiful.

37:47 I get the sense that Angola just wants to hold off until halftime. They could have been killed early but are hanging on. Do any of you think they can even this up? I still have faith but I am an atheist.

36:21 Crisis in Berlin. I’m out of beer and thirsty as hell. Can I make it another 10 minutes? 50-50 odds right now.

35:22 Ronaldo did not miss much with that header on the corner. He isn’t going to score as long as he wears a cut off jersey. How is he allowed to get away with that. I really don’t like that guy.

34:00 Angola concedes a corner. Ronaldo heads it off the crossbar. Angola races down to the other end and gets nothing. End to end action here.

33:21 Note to anyone else who liveblogs: don’t wear a hot flag as a cape when you are typing a million words a minute. Starting to sweat more than the players. Hot day here in Berlin.

32:17 After a dreadful start Angola has turned things around a bit. Just as I type that Pauleta barely misses a header to put Portugal up by a pair. Should have burried that one.

31:07 Angola captain Akwa with a shot that misses by about a mile. The cat isn’t afraid to shoot. I hear he has been quite a hit with the German ladies. My sources say the town of Celle, Germany is smitten with him. They must fancy guys who bicycle.

29:27 No sign of Beckenbauer in the crowd yet. Maybe his helicopter ran out of gas.

28:25 How would you describe the color of Portugal’s kits? Are they maroon, burngandy or something else?

27:40 Angola’s Jamba showed the yellow card for taking down Ronaldo.

26:47 Angola starting to play better and string together passes. This might be why they qualified for the World Cup. Beat out Nigeria in qualifying. Just spotted a tattoo on the back of a Portugal player. Isn’t that a chick thing?

25:35 Akwa with his second bicycle kick of the game. Flies it high and wide but boy is he getting on the highlight shows tonight. Must have watched the movie Victory! when he was little. Pele he is.

23:19 Angola discovers that there is another half of the field. Matteus gets off a bomb from outside but it flies over the crossbar. That’s what I’m talking about Angola!

22:09 Pretty much a one sided affair so far in this one. If Angola is this weak can you imagine how a coach-less Togo will be?

21:33 Shot of Scolari on the sideline. He is happy not to be coaching England tonight. Angola’s coach is nicknamed the Professor. He needs to come up with something smart to make this game more competitive.

20:22 Simao gets mugged by Delgado in the corner. Free kick Portugal. It runs over the other touchline and Portugal contines the attack. Angola fans have to be nervous anytime the ball is in their defensive third.

18:09 The Uruguay ref has a bit of a spare tire in his backside but so far hasn’t had to do much work. Still 1-0 Portugal. The game has settled after a frentic Portugal start.

17:35 The problem for Angola is that their pants are too tight. How can they move around in those things?

17:02 This is the 8th game I have watched on German tv and I still don’t understand a friggin’ word they are saying. Something about Angola playing like arse. My translation might be off though.

15:48 Angola keeper Ricardo down on the turf being attended to by the training staff. He might be wise to get off the pitch now the way his defense is playing. He’s up and alive.

14:34 Let’s hear it for night time! No shadows in this game. Can’t Germany do something about the sun? Like hide it during televised games.

13:12 Portugal with tons of space to operate in the midfield. Pauleta has been criticized a lot in the past but that opening goal has to be a good confidence booster for him.

12:26 Portugal free kick from 40 yards out. Cleared away by Angola but controlled by Portugal. Angola looked like it was going to get crushed in this one but things have settled down a bit. Only a matter of time before Portugal scored again though.

10:23 Akwa with a huge bicycle effort but he is unable to connect. That will be on the highlight reels after the game.

9:14 Any time the ball is near the Angola fullbacks you have to be nervous. They look completely scared and outclassed. The forwards are playing ok, but the midfield is nowhere to be seen. .

8:24 Angola has gone 5 minutes without giving up another goal. Small accomplishments.

7:07 Angola corner kick smothered by Portugal’s keeper Ricardo. Why do both keepers have to been named Ricardo? That is confusing. They should have co-ordinated better.

6:16 Angola has no answer for Ronaldo and Figo in the midfield. Figueriedo tries a shot from the outside. Settle down boys. The game isn’t over.

5:04 Absolutely the worst possible start for Angola. I’m afraid this one could turn into a blowout unless the Palancas settle down. Are they even playing with a backline? Doesn’t look like it.

3:47 GOAALLLLL> Figo feeds a cross to Pauleta. Terrible defending by Angola. 1-0 Portugal.

3:15 Figo dancing around in the midfield like a dancer. He has such grace. Too bad his hair is so greasy this time around.

2:27 Angola kicks it over the Portugal endline. A minor accomplishment!

1:21 Portugal on the attack again. Figo crosses it in but it is smothered by Angola keeper Ricardo. This one could get ugly early if the Palancas aren’t better in the back.

:06 Portugal races down the field and Pauleta almost scores. That would have been the fastest World Cup goals ever. Bad sign for Angola.

Kickoff We’re underway in Cologne as Angola makes its World Cup debut against the heavily favored team from Portugal. I’m pumped. Thanks for joining me for the next 90 minutes of football fun.

Pregame:
3 minute countdown: The players from both sides shake hands and the captains exchange gifts. Angola will play a 4-1-3-2.

5 minute countdown: Portugal’s national anthem is played. The players are standing shoulder to shoulder and singing loud and proud. This is such a great World Cup tradition.

6 minute countdown: Angola wearing white kits with red, black and yellow strip. Portugal wearing its purple Nike shirts. Both teams appear relaxed as the Angola national anthem is played. What a special moment it is for a war-torn African country. Goose bumps.

8 minute countdown: A beautiful evening in Cologne. No shadows on the pitch for a change. The referees from Uruguay lead both teams onto the pitch. The crowd is decidedly pro-Portugal but there are pockets of Angola support in the stands. What an exciting moment as their team makes its World Cup debut.

10 minute countdown: To set the scene here, I am wearing an Angola flag as a cape. I have a nice pilsner sitting next to me and nervous butterflies in my stomach. Angola is a team I adopted back in Novemeber. I apologize in advance to fans of Portugal. I’ll try to keep the LiveBlog neutral but it might be tough. This is one game where I have a rooting interest.

15 minute countdown: Angola is getting paid $5,000 per goal in the World Cup. I’m going to dig deep into my pockets and throw in an extra 2 Euros for each goal they score. I’m prepared to go broke if that is what it takes to see them win.

20 minute countdown: German television is showing where Angola is located on the world map. After tonight’s game everyone will know where it is located!

30 minute countdown: The German television shows both teams getting off the team buses. Angola looking good in some stylish Puma tracksuits. Portugal looking shabby in Nike gear. Advantage: Angola.

40 minute countdown: There is an Angola flag hanging out a window of the building next to the World Cup Blog Berlin HQ. A good luck sign if I have ever seen one.

50 minute countdown: I am ready for this one. My beloved Angola makes its World Cup debut against a very good Portugal team. I hope the lads are as fired up as I am!

It has been a hot day here in Germany but should be ideal football weather come kick off. What are your predictions?

Mexico wins it! After dragging for the first few minutes and looking a step slow against a pumped up Iran, Mexico came back to score first and took a 1-1 tie to the half. The second half was all Mexico as Iran looked like they were either gassed or playing for a tie. Goals by Omar Bravo and Antonio Naelson in the second half put Iran away. We’ve got 90 minutes of liveblogging and plenty of comments to read through for more information.

Full: Good result for Mexico in a game that could have turned ugly for them. It looked like Iran might run away with it until Mexico took over, scored first, settled down and then came out of the half in complete control.

87:21 Looks like John, our team blogger for Mexico called it. He predicted a 1-1 tie at the half and a 3-1 victory for Mexico. Check it out here.

83:46 The celebration has started for Mexico’s fans.

81:35 Iran seems to have regained a little spunk but I don’t think Mexico is going to let them anywhere near a goal.

78:45 Antonio Naelson heads in a cross to the left corner. Playing to tie is not working out for Iran.

78:40 GOAL MEXICO!

77:00 I am learning the German words for “huge mistake” watching these replays.

75:35 An Iran defender fails to clear the ball and loses control. Bravo with the goal. Mexico 2 Iran 1.

75:29 GOAL MEXICO!

72:11 Blogger Chris says this game reminds him of the siege of Carthage, where both sides tried to wait the other out. Correct his history if you can.

70:40 The shadow is 3/4 of the way across the field and both teams look like they’ve settled into a midfield game. I guess this is what happen when two teams from the sun have to play in the shade.

65:05 1-1 still but Iran doesn’t look like the same team. I’ve seen more inspiration at a cricket match in Nebraska.

64:07 A Mexico corner after the Iran goalie apparently just didn’t feel like going to get the ball. It was right in front of him.

61:11 Iran spends 30 consecutive seconds within striking distance but resorts to launching the ball into the stands instead of kicking it anywhere near the goal.

59:35 Omar Bravo with a decent acting job gets a (suprise!) free kick!

57:41 Iran resorts to taking down Rafael Marquez as he approaches the goal. Judges are split on whether it was a flop or not.

55:30 And I mean like Long Gone.

55:29 The assertion and confidence that Iran showed for the first few minutes of the game has disappeared.

54:05 Yellowcard for Javad Nekounam. I didn’t see anything. Score still 1-1.

53:26 Corner for Mexico. Corners are the new free kicks.

51:00 Francisco Fonseca in for Borgetti. The German kommentator is throwing around words like “superstar” that I can understand.

49:00 Replay of Iran losing the ball, I guess so they don’t have to show the major soul-patch of the Mexico coach. Looks like Borgetti is about to come off.

47:00 Iran loses the ball in the far corner, Mexico fails doesn’t get much of an advantage out of it.

45:40 World Cup Blog is watching the game on a different channel now, the shadow is just as bad despite better camera angles.

45:00 Couple of half-time subs for Mexico and we’re underway.

Half Time: Iran came out looking like they were going to run all over Mexico, keeping the ball at their end of the field for most of the first 10 minutes. Mexico came to life about 18 minutes in and scored first. Iran answered with a goal in the 35th minute.

44:59 The half ends one second early and both teams are off the field. Great half. Fast and furious action with fun to watch football.

43:28 Apparently this game is being played in Nurnberg. I feel like an idiot, ignore all that Wikipedia nonsense below.

40:52 Mexico is leading Iran 13-9 in fouls. If only it could be used as a tie breaker.

38:40 31.3 m free kick for Mexico. The shadow is slowly encroaching on midfield and suddenly that’s the most exciting action on the field. Both teams hoping to head into the half with a tie.

37:44 Looks like Mexico’s trying to slow the game down, holding back in their own territory.

35:10 Yahya Golmohammadi follows a header that would have been in if not for a spectacular save. 1-1.

35:02 GOAL IRAN!

33:00 Unnecesarily long slow motion replay of goal celebration, I’m not sure why it’s up there, I missed a bunch of the game looking for a follow up to the Wikipedia mexican stand-off information.

31:00 Ball possession shown to be at exactly 50-50. Not quite a Mexican stand-off but similar. Still 1-0.

29:58 Another Beckanbauer sighting. It’s really admirable of him to make the effort to travel to every game in his personal helicopter.

27:30 A Franco header to Bravo off a(nother) set piece. Iran defenders MIA.

27:00 GOAL MEXICO!

26:20 Another Mexico free kick with a camera angle that had me convinced the ball was headed toward the goal.

24:30 A Mexico corner in a game with more free kicks than corners so far.

23:16 Important game time information: according wikipedia, a Mexican stand off is when both sides are at an impasse, a dilemna that neither side can win. Why this information is included in the liveblog: the movie Munich is referenced as an example of a Mexican stand-off and this game is being played in Munich.

21:00 Mexico seems to be getting over their jet-lag and coming back to life. With the frantic pace this game is going to see some goals VERY soon.

18:00 I knew the first flop of the game wasn’t far behind. Classic plant and dive results in a Mexico free kick.

17:50 First yellowcard of the game. Gerardo Torrado makes gets solid contact with an Iran body. Suprising that the Card Count is outpacing the Flop Count.

16:01 The speed of this game is refreshing. Bravo gets undercut and lobs his free kick to the goalie. Even he didn’t think it had a chance.

14:45 An anonymous forward hiding in the shadow takes three Iran defenders but doesn’t really get a good look at the goal.

13:00 Free kick for Mexico. Honest effort but not really close.

10:50 Two CLOSE calls for Mexico, Iran gets a cross through and then a header goes wide right. I’m sticking by my Iran 3 Mexico 0 prediction.

8:00 Reports coming in that Mexico is significantly shorter than Iran as a team, they also seem to be significantly slower.

6:50 A phantom offsides call against Iran. They look strong, moving the ball more quickly than Mexico.

5:33 Rafael Marquez with the commanding tackle in the box. He got the ball first but I still yelled at the TV for a few seconds.

2:45 Mahdavikia with a long range shot, suprisingly close off the right post.

1:25 Iran’s keeping the ball in Mexico territory, play is hugging the close sideline in the shadow. Both teams look strong.

00:00 Iran looks sharp in their all red unis with white shoes. Mexico is invisible in the shadows.

Awkward exchange at midfield, Iran’s giving Mexico a hand-made rug, Mexico’s giving Iran a flag from a street vendor.

Beckanbauer sighting. He was at the Leipzig game an hour ago, the guy is amazing.

Very little shadow on the pitch, this IS a state of the art stadium.

Based on our pre-game comments, Mexico is actually the underdog. Any Mexico fans out there? From the looks of the pre game stadium shots they’ve got a major advantage in crowd support. A solid band of green is ringing the stadium.

We’re debating the art of the flop at World Cup Blog HQ and we’d like your thoughts. What would be the most effective dive deterrent? Video replays with post-game yellowcards? On field review? Backhanded slaps from a large woman?

Pregame: It is a hot day in Germany. Any predictions?

Instead of debating something silly like military reform, the lawmakers will be joining the rest of the conscious world in watching a game that could very well determine the winner of Group D. A true war it will be.

“What wouldn’t be acceptable would be for there to be no work that day. What we did was alter the schedule to allow the work scheduled for that day to take place by adapting it to the time of the game,” said Communist lawmaker Bernardino Soares.

There are still people who call themselves Communists. Ah, those were the days. But I digress.

Not everyone is pleased with this move, however.

“This sends a very bad signal. I don’t see how employers can now turn down employees who also propose changes in timetables when they want to watch football,” said Francisco van Zeller, president of the Confederation of Portuguese Industry.

Oh contraire. This sends exactly the right message. The World Cup holiday movement is growing. We will not be stopped until every man, woman and child can waste away an entire month watching football. Well done, Portugal!
