(Kind of) Big Question: Which Team will win the Third Place Game?

By: WC Bob | June 6th, 2006 | 24 Comments »

You’ve established the final four teams in the World Cup and you’ve determined the two teams that will battle for the trophy on July 9. Just like the real tournament you have to one more day to tell us who is going to win it all. Today you get to put your pride and courage on the line by predicting the winner of the tournament’s least meaningful, yet always entertaining match.

Which team will walk away from Germany wearing the title of third place finisher? Admit it, you’ve been thinking a lot about this one.

Everyone has been picking favourites:

Last World Cup it was Turkey vs South Korea(Hosts). Why would things be too different this time Tunisia vs Germany with Tunisia coming 3rd.

I think, it will be Brazil: http://fo.reca.st/wm.php?u=kickitlikeme

But it should be some of surprise teams such as Ukraine, Switzerland or Cote d’Ivoir

I don`t want Serbia to play in the 3rd play match, as there is definitely a course over this match.

Since it is staged, look what happened, especially in recent torunaments:

Examples:
Portugal 66 -> 30 years absence
France 86 -> 12 years absence
England 90 -> missed 94
Sweden 94 -> missed 98
Netherlands 98 -> missed 02
Turkey 02 -> misses 06

Given the recent inability of the 3rd place game winner to qualify for the following World Cup, I hope that it isn’t Germany.

I can’t believe it. That’s exactly what I came up with as well!

Just out of curiosity, what do your quarter-finals look like?

Everyone seems to have forgotten the underdogs. My pick – Japan will be a major achiever this world cup. Greece was my pick for the Euro 2004. People laughed but then we all know the result.
