Big Question: Who is the World Cup XI Goalkeeper?

Hey kids, this week you are going to have a lot of fun. Each day we’ll be asking for your position-by-position selections for this year’s World Cup all tournament team. By the end of the week we should have the 11 names that are going to end up making the all-star team. Before you rush to submit your vote, you’ll want to take into consideration not only the talent of an individual player, but also the likelihood that his team will advance past the first round in the tournament. We’re going to field a 4-4-2 for this team.

Today’s position is goalkeeper. Who do you think is going to be the top keeper in Germany?

You can vote with your head or with your heart, but please vote for one name only and please vote only for a keeper. We’ll tally the results and announce the winner on Friday so your selection must be made by the end of Thursday.

Thanks for playing along.

Jens Lehmann. He’s going to be fired up for Germany. Who wouldn’t after being left on the bench for the past two World Cups?

  • http://incadenza.typepad.com/soccer_thoughts/ Evan

Without taking advancement into consideration, Kasey Keller.

But seeing as the US might not make it far, Iker Casillas or Petr Cech…I’ll go with Casillas.

  • footyor

Right now, its Casillas, Buffon or Chec. Keller is great but not in the league of these guys.

  • Ahmad

It is Van Der Sar’s last appearance at a world cup stage and because the netherlands are not facing easy oponents, his responsibility will be great for the team.

  • Milan

Kalac for Austrlia, if he is in form at the world cup as he has been when he has played for AC Milan he will be a test even for the best of strikers.

  • Reds

everyone has forgotten Van Der Sar. Holland is a quality team and he’ll do well

  • http://www.viuasfotos.com/euler.htm Euler

Dida is a monster! I saw him playing and his game is back!!!

  • Dido

Lehmann will be the top keeper.

  • http://www.viuasfotos.com/euler.htm Euler

My vote is still for Dida, but I agree Lehmann is amazing.

  • Alastair

in terms of raw talent it will be Buffon, but I really don’t know who the most impressive performer will be.

  • mightie

portugal is in upbeat mood & i think ricardo will excel at the worldcup, he was fabulous at euro 2004.

  • DT

    Mark Schwarzer!

  • http://www.worldcup2006news.net/ Knut Karnapp

I would have said Oliver Kahn, but now I have to say Jens Lehmann.

  • PeterG

    I’ll guess Casillas.

  • Qstel

Dida or Lehmann. Possibly Cech, but I don’t see the Czechs going past the quarter-finals.

  • http://australia.worldcupblog.org vlado

    Definitely Casillas.

  • El Aclantista

Cech hands down I got a feeling the Czexh republic is going to surprise a lot of people this summer.

  • pinaki de

i think it is going to be coupet.
    casillas a close second.

  • http://www.bensefels.de Bense

Lehmann, Buffon, Dida, Cech, Casillas… who knows.

A good defense can make their goalie shine, too.

  • http://portugal.worldcupblog.org Luis Paulo

Buffon will drive Italy far in this tournament

  • POLSKA

    artur boruc and jerzy dudek

  • soze

If Lothar Matthaus’ prediction comes true, and Japan makes it out of the first round. I think Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi has a chance.

  • http://- mario linares

El Pato Abbondanzieri ja! ja! ja!

  • http://footiegirl.blogspot.com Jen

I think it’s going to be Lehmann (all the best keepers are a little bit crazy), but Casillas, Cech and Buffon are all contenders. Dida will flub a couple of key saves, but his team will score enough to make up for it.

  • Martin

Buffon of Italy will be the top goalie in this World Cup.

  • http://penaltyspot.blogspot.com James

    Osvaldo Sanchez, Mexico.

  • http://www.google.com Sunil C

I think i would go for Cech ,
    Dida, Van der sar, Lehmann

  • Luis Carlos

I have to give a second vote to:

    Oswaldo Sanchez, Mexico.

  • http://www.aresthetics.ch/trav Adrian Wagner

Ahm, Dida, sorry, I don’t think he’s that great. He’s ok, but not great. I think Van Der Saar is currently the best keeper around. Typical Ajax school: a keeper who can actually kick a ball as well, which unfortunately is still not the case with the majority of the keepers. He might not be the very best on the line (where I’d probably go for Buffon), but overall I think he’s the best keeper.

However, there is one that is usually forgotton, because he’s in the shadow of a much weaker keeper: Gregory Coupet. If they have the guts to leave Bartez on the bench (I personally wouldn’t even take him to the cup), I think Coupet is one of the contenders for best keeper.

  • Massimo

Buffon is definitely the best goal keeper in the world, also the most expensive I think. He will do well again, he always does.

  • http://www.kooora.com Habib jaafar

    first choice is Buffon
    second is Lehmann

  • http://www.originalrudeboy.com7 Tomislav Chagall

the germans will exit soon, so coupet.

  • Daniel

    Buffon

  • Ahmad

Van der Sar , second choice Buffon

  • xolaris

    Casillas, Keller

  • Coolio

Cassilas hands down has shoddy defence at real madrid but is the man who kept dem in top 4 dis season

  • Min

    1. van der sar
    2. lehmann
    3. buffon
    4. cassilas
    5. dida

  • http://notesfromanangryisland.blogspot.com/ peter mitchell

Jens Lehmann for sure, he’s the best around (unless a stupid ref sends him off near the start of a big game) and was vital to Arsenals champions league (near) success.

  • Clayton

This is rediculious, with all do respect, Casillas is the only one who comes off his line for crosses, Cech and Buffon are brilliant shot stoppers but Casillas is just as good, and buffon and cech are really only shot stoppers (if Buffon is leader of his defence why is he not captain, instead his defender is) Casillas also has the best footwork in the world (he takes short quick steps not long slow ones) plus he’s captaining spain
(Van der Sar is HIGHLY over-rated)

  • Goss190

Has anyone ever heard of Oliver Khan??? Goalkeeper extrodinare from Germany that helps led Bayer Munich to the champions league every year. I know that he is old but look at others like Beckham. He will still be able to keep up with them. Argentina will win it all.

  • André

Absolutely Andreas Isaksson and petr Cech.

  • http://www.myspace.com/prostoy_patsan ivan

you guys say whatever you want, but Oleksander Shovkovskiy, from Ukraine is the best goalkeeper :-)

  • daloola

casillas is the best first of all he is small, talented nice and is an amazing goal keeper..Buffon is good but not like casillas no one can beat him!!!! believe me

  • daloola

love ya casillas and believe you are better than buffon, dida kahn

  • joana

ricardo is the best goalkeeper in the world!

  • angela

Buffon is definately the best goalkeeper. He has made fantastic saves throughout the World Cup.

  • eddie

    its got to be barthez

  • kris

Jens Lehmann is the best penalty saver in the world by far. Those saves he made in the Argentina quarter final were fantastic, he made an amazing save in the Champions Lg semi final and was great in the FA cup final 2004/05. Here are my top five.

    1. Jens Lehmann
    2. Gigi Buffon
    3. Ricardo
    4. Dida
    5. Fabien Barthez

Van der Sar and Cech aren’t far behind but Casillas is probably 9 or 10 because he is dropping by the minute. Pepe Reina is also high up in the goalie ranks.

  • jake

1.van der sar (a penalty killer)
    2.dida
    3.barthez
    4.hislop
    5.buffon

  • Nils

    1. Gianluigi Buffon, who keeped Italy in the World Cup
    2. Osvaldo Sanchez, 2 wonderfull save’s
    3. Lehmann, who saved wondefull penalties
    4. Ricardo, penalty-king
    5. Casillas.

But not in the world cup is the number one place voor Iker Casillas en Buffon.

The worst keeper on this world cup? Barthez

  • adam

    top 5

    1.petr cech
    2.gianlugi buffon
    3.jens leahmann
    4.dida
    5.iker cassias

  • Said Salem

I think that at the moment Jens Lehmann is the best and has been consitently on top form throughout last season and the world cup, and has also carried it into the begining of this years season.

    1.Jens Lehmann
    2.casillas
    3.Buffon
    4.Van der sar
    5.Dudek

  • Luke

Petr Cech is definitely the best keeper. He is so good even at a young age and already holds an unbroken cleansheet record. Most keepers like Buffon and Casillas have the best team in the world to back them up but Cech still can show he can pull it off even with a bad czech defence.

  • jordan

buffon rulezz nobody can catch him pownage!!!!

  • Graciano

Ricardo for sure, hes way better then cech buffon and dida! BOFFON SAVES NO SHOTS IN THE SHOOTOUT!! RICARDO IS THE KING!

  • Shkodran

Petr Cech is the best goalkeeper in the world .he is amazing.buffon comes behind him.van der last year has a great season.however i think that cech is the best keeper in the world
