Big Question: Who are the World Cup XI Defenders?

Each day this week we’re asking for your position-by-position selections for this year’s World Cup all tournament team. By the end of the week we should have the 11 names that are going to end up making the all-star team. Before you rush to submit your vote, you’ll want to take into consideration not only the talent of an individual player, but also the likelihood that his team will advance past the first round in the tournament. We’re fielding a 4-4-2 for this team.

Today’s position is defender. Please submit no more than four names. We’ll tally the results and announce the selections on Friday so your choices must be made by the end of Thursday.

Select the goalkeeper

  • Milan

I recon Robert Kovac Juventus, Alessandro Neste AC Milan, John Terry Chelsea and Walter Samuel Inter Milan. To me these four defenders are unbelievably skill in all the areas needed to be a world class defender and to me this makes them the best in the world.

  • Martin

Ok I’ll vote for these as the top 4 defenders at each position in the upcoming World Cup:
    RB-Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy)
    CB-Alessandro Nesta (Italy)
    CB-Carles Puyol (Spain)
    LB-Mariano Pernia (Spain)

  • DT

    Right Back: Zanetti (Argentina).
Centre Backs: Nesta (Italy) and Carragher (England).
    Left Back: Zambrotta (Italy).

    Carles Puyol, Spain.
    Gianluca Zambrotta, Italy.
    Robert Kovac, Croatia.
    Rafael Marquez, Mexico.

hi i think i should go for..

    1. Roberto Carlos
    2.Phillipe senderos
    3. John Terry
    4. Alessandro Nesta

  • Reds

The current 4 best defenders in the world are Nesta, Carragher, Terry and Puyol

  • http://netherlands.worldcupblog.org Mike

Hmm, not Walter Samuel. I agree with Reds. But instead of playing a couple players out of position I would choose Heinze instead of Nesta for left-back and instead of Puyol, maybe Zanetti for right back.

  • Genesis Guanga

In no particular order or position: John Terry, Nesta, Gallas, and Rio Ferdinand

  • rogi32

trabelsi (tunisia), eboué (Ivory coast), Krstajic /serbia & MOntenegro), Marquez (Mexico)

I’d go with Senderos, Nesta, Lahm and Lucio.

At least one of the young german prospects will rise and shine, and I guess Lahm is the most advanced of these, but Huth might have his break-thru, too.

  • M

    I think:

    Zambrotta,Terry, Puyol, Gallas

  • http://netherlands.worldcupblog.org Mike

El Aclantista, Stam won’t be at the tournament. He retired from international football after Euro 2004.

    Gallas
    Puyol

  • http://footiegirl.blogspot.com Jen

Left back: Gabriel Heinze (assuming he’s fit in time)

Centre half: John Terry and Carles Puyol. Although I think there’s going to be a lot of competition for the best centre backs at this tournament.

Right back: Emmanuel Eboue. Just for the hell of it.

  • Bielsa, still loco after all these years

    Here’s my favoured Formation:
    3 CB’s + 2 WB’s

    Puyol Nesta Lucio

    Zanetti Sorin

    (Gallas) (Terry) (Cannavaro)

    (Zambrotta) (Cole?)

  • Luis Carlos

    Marquez (Mexico, go Barca)
    Terry (England)
