Big Question: Who are the World Cup XI Defenders?

By: WC Bob | May 2nd, 2006 | 35 Comments »

Each day this week we’re asking for your position-by-position selections for this year’s World Cup all tournament team. By the end of the week we should have the 11 names that are going to end up making the all-star team. Before you rush to submit your vote, you’ll want to take into consideration not only the talent of an individual player, but also the likelihood that his team will advance past the first round in the tournament. We’re fielding a 4-4-2 for this team.

Today’s position is defender. Please submit no more than four names. We’ll tally the results and announce the selections on Friday so your choices must be made by the end of Thursday.

Select the goalkeeper

I’d go with Senderos, Nesta, Lahm and Lucio.

At least one of the young german prospects will rise and shine, and I guess Lahm is the most advanced of these, but Huth might have his break-thru, too.

El Aclantista, Stam won’t be at the tournament. He retired from international football after Euro 2004.

Left back: Gabriel Heinze (assuming he’s fit in time)

Centre half: John Terry and Carles Puyol. Although I think there’s going to be a lot of competition for the best centre backs at this tournament.

Right back: Emmanuel Eboue. Just for the hell of it.

Carlos Gamarra (Par)
He is one of the best in the back… Still kills me seen that images of the match against France in ‘98…
