Big Question: Who are the World Cup Blog Readers’ XI?

By: WC Bob | May 5th, 2006 | 12 Comments »

All this week you kids have played along with our little game to select the 11 names we will see on the all-tournament roster at the World Cup. A big thank you to everyone for participating and for casting your votes. We think you did a pretty good job and we’re even willing to overlook the submission of a few players who have retired from international football. We’ll make sure to compare the results when the actual tournament team is announced so we can tell you how smart you really are. For now, here is the World Cup XI.

All election results have been verified by a monitoring team from the United Nations and have been certified by the accounting firm of Kellett and Sons. Each player selected will receive a fake Rolex courtesy of the guy standing on my street corner.

Keeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)

Defenders: Alessandro Nesta (Italy), John Terry (England), Carlos Puyol (Spain), Rafael Marquez (Mexico)

Midfielders: Ronaldinho (Brazil), Kaka (Brazil), Frank Lampard (England); Tie between Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Juan Roman Riquelme (Argentina)

Forwards: Thierry Henry (France), Andriy Schevchenko (Ukraine)

No defensive midfielders in this team. No full backs either.

I would like to see this team playing. Too bad Zidane, Adriano and Ronaldo didn’t make it.

There is only central defenders. No RB or LB, hehe. There is no defensive midfielder too.

I don’t want to bitch or anything, but it would’ve been better to do it by position:

GK, CD (x2), LB, RB, DM, OM, LW, RW, F (x2)

… just my 2 cents

This is how the midfield should have looked like: Ronaldinho, makelele, Gerrard, Ballack. The forwards seem to be perfect.

Lampard? surely the most overated midfielder in the english premiership let alone the world. Only looks good because he never has to defend for Chelsea. His place in this team should’ve gone to Gerrard to provide balance as well as the fact that he is a way better player

Terry, Puyol, and Marquez? Are you kidding me? Try Cannavaro, Thuram, and Lahm.

All five of your midfielders are wrong, too. Try Zidane, Ribery, Pirlo, Maxi Rodriguez, and Schweinsteiger.

I’ll go for Henry as a striker, but Sheva? Please. Try Klose.

Thanks for the laughs!
