Big Question: Which team is this year’s France?

By: WC Bob | April 21st, 2006 | 16 Comments »

Four year ago France entered the World Cup as the tournament holders, European Champions and with the kind of expectations that would have made Charles Dickens proud. But like a tragic Dickens’ tale, Les Bleus crashed and burned in match play. Every World Cup, one or more of the favorites are ousted well before anyone could have predicted. Here is your chance to predict this year’s disaster team before anyone else.

Which of the contenders do you think will be pretenders in Germany this summer? To help you make your decision, here are the current ten teams that the oddmakers tap to win the World Cup.

Brazil
England
Germany
Argentina
Italy
France
Holland
Spain
Portugal
Czech Republic

England! It’s going to be England…frankly, Beckham the Emporer wears no clothes. The only time i’ve seen Mr. Posh Spice come through in the clutch was in a Pepsi commercial. Remember his textbook double choke in the England-France Euro Cup game? Brilliant, that. I’ll say England doesn’t get out of the pool.

Might be England. They might fall shot of expectations when dropping out of the tournament in the round of the last 16.

Might be Spain. They never played a World Cup that well.

I remember seeing Beckham playing very well in Real Madrid. Ok, it was a long time ago, but he has potential to display talent, if he focus his mind to the competition.

well spain never comes in with great expectations anyway, do they. So even if they do get eliminated early, it can’t be compared with france’s exit in 2002.

My guess: Brazil :) the law of averages is going to catch up with them this summer.

Think about it… In 2002, France and Argentina were the major favourites to win the WC – and both went out in the group stage. That’s an upset so huge that it is unlikely to be repeated in many years. The only thing that could come close this summer would be Brazil’s elimination in the group stage. Not too likely if you ask me. But then again…

People have had Argentina on their cards as mostly, but lately they were not named or reported about. Argentina will be a rather very positive or very negative surprise, too. Semi or our in the first.

I will go with argentina, BUT only if all things go wrong for them before the world cup such as messi not coming back, heinze not being healthy enough to play…. etc. other than that, if those two players come back for them then i would look towards france again for failing; after all, they did score the least amount of goals to qualify for the world cup. credit their goalie and defense… henry will have to step it up if they are going to get anywhere this time round.

Well, Argentina was the one in 2002 and partially in 1998. I’m praying for third time a charm. But if we screw things up again, I’m turning to Baseball.

France.

But the only team that could go out in the group stages that would rival France in 2002 would be Brazil. Remember, France weren’t just the defending world champions in 2002, they had also just won Euro 2000. There’s no team in the tournament with that kind of momentum right now. I say Brazil would be the only comparable team because of the strength of their attack and the quality that they have.

Tough one. based on last cup, i would say Portugal. Tight team, wrong state of mind. possibly the only team that can take down brazil if at their best

Anyone who says England is a fool. Have ya looked at their group? And besides, the dude who was critisizing Beckham must not know the ture value of that taem lies in the ability for Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney to connect and kick butt. Beckham could be left at home if those three can do what they are capable of.

England will do well – their biggest problem is team chemistry and the enormuos pressure they face from fans and the press in the UK.

I am hoping the choker turns out to be Italy – and i think their is a chance this will happen – nothing Italian has looked great this year. Of course I am from the US so i am hoping we can be the ones to deliver the present to everyone.

Yes, but can Gerrard and Lampard connect?

With Rooney on his game, I think England can beat anyone. But will Owen be there up front with him? If not, who will be there? Crouch?

I think England’s midfield is the big question mark.
