Big Question: What New Rules Would You Introduce?

By: Daryl | July 31st, 2006 | 21 Comments »

UEFA have announced some new legislation to tackle racism and diving.

The main points are as follows:

Racist behaviour from players could earn them a five match ban.

Racist behavior by fans will result in minimum 30,000 Swiss Francs fine for clubs.

Racist incidents could also result in matches being played behind closed doors, ground closure, matches awarded by default, point deductions and disqualification from competitions.

Divers and injury fakers could get two match bans.

While new anti-racism, anti-diving legislation is always welcome, this smells like too-little, too-late.

For example, 30,000 Swiss francs is pocket change to a big club (it’s about £13,000/€19,000/$24,300) and the five match ban for racist players is a maximum not a minimum. The new legislation also states “Only the legal consequences of a disciplinary decision taken by the referee may be reviewed by the disciplinary bodies in cases where such a decision has involved an obvious error - for example, a case of mistaken identity,” meaning divers can’t be punished retro-actively. For the complete regulations click here.

If you were in charge at UEFA what new laws would you have introduced for 2006/7?

Two changes I would make that I don’t think would be to controversial are;

1. If a player leaves the field by stretcher or on his own he must stay off the field for 3 - minutes mandatory. Something along that line could be 2 minutes or 4 minutes im flexible.

2. No more guessing by the referee about how much injury time. Have a time keeper to stop and start the clock. as the play goes. That would elimiate injury time.

post-match video review of the game with the power to suspend players for diving or dangerous play.

Any rule that will deter the diving and cheating is welcome.

Also the match should have video ref, the cameras always seem to catch the incident. The ref watching video link should have direct access to the ref on the field. Then hopefully we will get some correct decisions by the refs.

Off Koosh’s comment, I think that should extend also to players who stop play.

Basically, if play is stopped for a player (either by the ref or by the ball being sent out of play), the mandatory period of sitting out is linked to the amount of time on the ground.

So either you go off and stay off for x minutes, or you “recover”, and spend a minute off for every 10 seconds you were on the ground (or whatever).

Video review: brilliant. Then Henry’s bald piece of fakery against Spain would be punished, as it should have been.

Greater punishment for consistent deliberate fouling in midfield to stop play. Greater and more consistent punishment for the practice of several squad members of one team singling out one player of the opposing team to deliberately foul him (often ending in injury or fights on the pitch).

Why all these rules about racism?

What is all this sudden interest in racism? Don’t tell me it’s because of the Zidane-Materazzi affair. (”Shoot,” the FIFA Officials said, “we don’t have regulations about racism and that’s what everyone is talking about!”

I mean, if there was racism before, how was it addressed? Don’t tell me this is a new phenomenon…

Video-ref sitting on the edges of the field with button-ready access to different takes: YES!

Diving: Only if it’s an obvious acting feat. I said it before, players sometimes see that someone is putting their legs in danger and they will throw themselves down to avoid injury to their most prized body part. If there is a foul, it’s a foul, even if the player dives to avoid it or to call the referee’s attention to it.

I agree with Nicko. Post-match reviews of diving and other incidents would be great. Regardless of whether the ref sees it or calls it, in those cases in which video review shows very clearly that there was a dive, the player should be harshly penalized after the fact. Give him a five-match ban. It’s harsh, but after a couple players get banned, the diving would just stop.

I dont think there should be post match reviewing, that can cause a lot of problems.

But there should be video review. Ive heard that there IS a fifth official with a TV but he cant talk to anybody. What’s the point of that?
Soccer needs to get with the times. Video review is needed. Look at hockey. They need to go to video review for goals many times to see if they’re in and fans cant imagine what it’d be like if the opinion of one ref who is only human is the only factor considered

I also like the first suggestion about people being carried off in stretchers. I mean i simply dont understand how u can be too injured to walk at one point and then get up and play soccer less than 30 seconds later. Perhaps they’re just going for the ride at this point…

Only ITALY is allowed to wear blue in their uniforms. So Argentina, France and every other lower tier country would no long be allowed to wear any shade of blue.

Would make the game better and show proper respect to the AZZURRI
