Big Question: Is A Default Championship Worth Celebrating?

Looks like Inter Milan will be awarded the Scudetto once the match-fixing appeals process is complete. With Juve relegated and stripped of the title, and 2nd placed AC Milan deducted 44 points from their total, 3rd placed Inter will be awarded the Serie A title by default.

Inter’s last title was back in 1989 (when Phil Collins and Milli Vanilli were popular) and the club have spent money left, right and centre to try and win it back. After all that time, do they want to win the Scudetto this way? Seems Inter coach Roberto Mancini does (as does Homer Simpson).

On one hand, Inter deserve the title. They were the highest placed team that didn’t indulge in match-fixing. But with the 2005/6 Scudetto being so tainted, will Inter fans be celebrating their default championship?

    yes.

  • Rain

Why not? if they were third but the first and second were involved in match-fixing, the real champions are Inter Milan.

    yup. they deserve it.

  • dietmar

look man, cheaters shall inheirat their own earth…

  • gina

Haha. The only way Inter wins a scudetto is through this! It doesn’t even come at full worth…it’s like half a scudetto!

  • dietmar

here’s the thing, the guys that, well cheated will once again be on a pitch where it’s rainin’ like hell…

  • Adam Rupolo

Yes they deserve it I suppose. They were the best non-cheating team, that simple. That being said, it no longer matters and I dont think they will care much anymore receiving it.

an argument can be made as to why they shouldn’t get it: basically near the end of the season certain teams will have played more agressively or more defensively depending on their positions and expectations (eg. a team which only needs one point for a champions league entry would play different from a team that needs 3 points) – this does affect the last few weeks of the league, so its possible that Inter could be next placed without being next best.

but I gotta say its a pretty low chance in a sport like football (in something like cycling for example its quite different). Apart from this I can’t think of any reason why Inter shouldn’t get it and celebrate it.

Sure, why shouldn’t they lay claim to the title? At least they didn’t win in the final match thanks to a crummy call by the referee…

O, and Daryl, minus points for the elicitation of Milli Vanilli. Aaaahhhh! 80s flashback! Feathered haircuts! Michael Jackson everywhere! Maradona at the height of his vanity! Save me! Save me!

I don’t think Inter would refuse it. Reminds me of Australia’s first ever Winter Olympic gold won by Steven Bradbury in 2002 in the 1000m short track speed skating. He didn’t win because others had cheated but he was so much off the pace in the final, when all four other competitors crashed out at the final corner, leaving a shocked Bradbury to gentle pass them by and take the gold medal. He’s still smiling after four years.

WELL LET ME REMIND EVERYONE THAT THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN QUESTION IS NOT THE ONE SUPPOSEDLY TAINTED BY FIXING GAMES ..THAT ONE WILL NEVER BE ASSIGNED.. NOW AS FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE GAME INVESTIGATED INTER MILAN HAS BEEN BEATEN BY JUVE TWICE AND AC MILAN ONCE ..IN TOTALLY REGULAR GAMES ..SO ONLY A DESPERATE, AWFULLY MANAGED TEAM LIKE INTER MAY WANT TITLES WHICH THEY WERE NOT IN THE FIRST PLACE ABLE TO WIN BECAUSE OF MISMANAGEMENT ….ONCE AGAIN WHEN YOU LOSE YOU SHOULD LOOK IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD FIRST BEFORE GOING AROUND WHINING!!

    rescorpione17:
    Hey dude:
If your TEAM’s maybe kicked out of Serie A Or got their points deducted then if the one that is not fixing games and still manage to get the 3rd place deserves to win… then ones that cheat should look in their own backyard as why would they need a favour/do some1 else a favour to be in better position for whatever, plz joe dont be a sorry loser……..ANYWAYS WE DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW MANY YEARS HAS THIS BEEN GOIN ON, So it may be that sort of info may be classified as to not destroy the legacy and credability of Italian Football…

Hey maybe an Investigation has to be conducted for this WC as well, because an Italian NT won it………..so the Administrators have picked up an IRREGULARITY from Juve and AC Milan…….How much has 06WC paid for this CUP????
Come on guys, they are the least TEAM that could’ve won it!!!
They dont have a thorn upfront!!!
Their best players are BUFFON & CANNAVARO and we all know they dont know where the opposition’s poles are, they just worry in keeping the ball away from their own!!!

  • kasets

futebolblinger ..your lost..Italy dont know where opposition poles are?

As the Germans, Ukrainians, Ghanians ect….2nd most goals of tournement and 10 different players scored (well balanced I’d say)….so please dont talk stupid…though it is your right to.

Hey Futebollinger..: how do you know my team ?
i am very much a supporter of my home town team AC Perugia wich paid a huge toll to OWN mistakes and league officials (Carraro+Galliani ) wrongdoings..for the rest i think (unless you are an Inter supporter therefore not elegible for discussion because you will only see your side )..you don’t know enough about the manipulation of media and power struggles going on in the world of soccer of italy …juventus already paid (in terms of losses in stock market ) will pay more but that doesn’t mean that the team had not legitimate chances to win over Inter milan which is ultimately a joke in the picture of club since bought overpayed players who did nothing and gave away the ones who became world champions (Pirlo,Cannavaro ..) and Seedorf..at the end they are the only reason they did not win…as much as i know almost everyone i know of the Inter supporters wants no title that did not got earned on the field ..and again there is no evidence whatsoever that 9 players featured in the final of the WC had to use external help to kick Inter’s ass 5 times in the past 3 seasons…whatever is going on now is so much italian where first we glorify winners in a very corrupted system and then we put them in jail there is no balance whatsoever in the judgment ..my hope is the the temptation of judges to rewrite history will stop at one poit..Justice has to be served not the proliferation of a political struggle …no part has to prevail in this one in order to have a clean start…so i welcome juve being relegated ,i welcome lazio and fiorentina being punished ,i strongly hope that Galliani and Carraro will eventually by paying for they wrong doings during long years of running the Calcio in italy and i think that no one should carry the Scudetto on their jersey next season in sign of MOURNING over the near death of a beautiful game….and you how nothing but ridicoulously prejudiced when you are trying to include Buffon (investigated for Poker Gambling on Internet with all of this )..being investigated is not a sign of guilt !! GET SOME REAL INFORMATION PLEASE !
