Senegal vs South Africa – LiveBlog
Senegal 1-1 South Africa FINAL
36′ Camara — 13′ Van Heerden
Group D
Date: Thursday, 31 January
Kick-off: 1700 GMT
Location: Kumasi Sports Stadium
Okay, the whistle blows and that’s the game. 1-1. Both teams are out of the tournament, because Tunisia and Angola drew as well. S. Africa was the better team, and got moreso as the game went on. They look like they might threaten in 2010.
90 + 7 Senegal gets off one last shot, but it goes high.
90 + 6 Again, the big Senegalese defenders can’t keep up with the S. Africans, but Fanteni shoots wide.
90 + 5′ Gueye booked for dissent.
90 + 4′ S. Africa charges forward again, but Coundoul and the post keep it from going in.
90 + 1 Zuma coming off, Fanteni on for S. Africa.
90′ SEVEN minutes of stoppage time! Mostly due to Josephs’ knees.
89′ Zuma gets another opportunity, but Senegal defends well. Zuma goes down with leg cramps.
86′ Chabangu goes forward, but sends a soft shot straight to Coundoul.
84′ Zuma has numbers up front in a S. African surge, but he passes to Masilela (probably not his best option) who shoots wide.
83′ Senegal gets a chance. Sougou sends in a good cross in front of goal, but it’s headed wide.
82′ Kamara out, and uh… somebody dame in. Sorry, again!
81′ Davids in, Moon off for S. Africa. And Chabangu was the sub i missed earlier.
80′ Corner from S. Africa ends in a questionable handball call against S. Africa.
79′ Another brilliant save by Coundoul. He’s going for a return engagement with the team.
78′ Beautiful long-distance shot by Chabangu is saved by Coundoul
76′ S. Africa charges to the goal, but the ball goes back and forth and nobody shoots. They wait too long, and Senegal is able to get numbers back and clear.
72′ Josephs is down again with an injury to the other leg after a late challenge. Khune is warming up.
Moriri off… And I was typing and didn’t see who came on. (This is my first tournament to liveblog. I’m still figuring things out.)
70′ Gueye sends a shot high.
69′ Senegal look threatening in front of the box, but S. Africa clears before they can get a shot off.
68′ Senegal goes on the attack at last, but the ball is headed over the crossbar.
64′ Josephs is down again for S. Africa. The knee again. Looks like it’s still bleeding.
61′ Coundoul makes an amazing save of a Zuma shot after a defensive collapse from Senegal.
60′ Niang off, Ndiaye on for Senegal.
59′ All of the play is going on in the Senegalese final third. S. Africa sends a beautiful string of passes back and forth in front of goal, but in the end Tshabalala shoots wide.
56′ S. Africa charges up the field. Beautiful play and passing leads to Zuma to Tshabalala, who shoots just wide.
55′ Ack. I’m back. My labrador just dropped a toy on my keyboard. Stupid dog.
52′ Diop is off, Babakar Gueye is on for Senegal. They have to go for lots of goals to get a shot at advancing.
51′ Josephs is down with a bloody knee from a collision with the ground. Play stops while he’s bandaged up.
50′ Tshabalal sees yellow for a dive in the box.
48′ Zuma to Tshabalala in front of goal. They shoot twice, but Senegal’s defense blocks both.
47′ The commentator says Morris is late out of the changing room. ???
46′ We’re underway. And Senegal’s back line is HUGE. In case you didnt’ know.
Okay, I found the scoop on the suspended players. El Hadji Diouf, goalkeeper Tony Sylva, and midfielder Ousmane Ndoye. Yeesh, guys. If you’re going to party the night before a game, don’t do it in a nightclub where you’ll get photographed!
Apparently Tony Sylva was one of the others caught partying, which is why our Bouna is in goal.
45 + 1 That’s the half. 1-1. The score for Tunisia and Angola is 0-0. Tell me you didn’t see that coming — if they get a draw, both go through.
One minute of stoppage time.
45′ Senegal are fired up after the goal and dominating possession.
44′ The ball heads immediately to the other end, and Zuma shoots into the side netting.
43′ Niang beats all defenders, but shoots soft, straight to the keeper.
41′ Moon has a gorgeous run up the right side… and then my screen freezes up. All I know is it didn’t end in a score. (I love liveblogging via computer.)
39′ Malick Ba sees yellow for a tackle I didn’t see. The free kick goes straight to Senegal.
36′ GOAL!!! Senegal by Henri Camara. Defensive lapses by S. Africa give Camara a fairly easy shot.
35′ Niang gives Diop a great pass just outside the box, but Diop shoots high.
30′ The names of the partying players were apparently given before I got English commentary, but one seems to be El Hadji Diouf, who is not here. Is anybody surprised?
32′ Sall sees yellow for a tackle that was nowhere near the ball. Seriously, he missed by about two feet.
27′ Niang gets a shot, but it goes wide.
25′ This is a very fast-paced, hard-tackling game, with play taking place mostly in the midfield and posession going back and forth frequently.
22′ Coundoul makes a good save on a hard, on-target Zuma shot.
20′ S. Africa calls for a handball, but the ref didn’t see it. He should have.
19′ Diop has a good chance but sends the cross over the line.
18′ Posession is going back and forth in the midfield, with not a lot happening.
14′ S. Africa are dominating play, and also possession at 67%
13′ GOAL!! South Africa. Van Heerden takes a perfect cross and slots it home.
11′ South Africa makes a great run up the right wing, but Van Heerden is tackled in the box. This could have been a penalty, but the ref says no. That doesn’t make it any less painful for Van Heerden, who gets up very slowly.
10′ Malick Ba sends a long shot very high.
9′ Free kick goes high.
8′ Zuma (S. Africa) is shoved down right outside the box. Dangerous free kick.
5′ Apparently three Senegal players were photographed at a nightclub last night and are not playing today.
4′ Bouna Coundoul , our Colorado Rapids guy is playing for Senegal. Woohoo!
3′ Yea, I have English commentary!!
2′ Senegal takes a short corner, which leads to a shot that is easily stopped by the S. African keepe
1′ We’re off
-1′ Senegal in white, S. Africa in yellow.
-3′ No English commentary that I can find. I do speak French, but we’ll see how fluently. Forgive me for what I get wrong here.
-8′ I’m getting French on both the French and English stream sites. This could make life interesting.
-9 Okay, I am getting the French stream. I don’t think I want to try liveblogging and figuring out French at the same time, so I’m off to find the English stream.
-10′ Okay, the streams up, and I don’t think the guy knows he’s on the air. Is everybody else getting a guy clearing his throat and speaking French on the phone? Or did I click on the wrong language box?
Preview:
It’s the game between the two Group D bottom dwellers. Both Senegal and South Africa are sitting on one point. And both still have a chance to advance, provided the Tunisia-Angola game doesn’t end in a draw. And both Tunisia and Angola say they’re playing for the win.
Senegal need to beat South Africa and hope Tunisia lose to Angola. They then need to finish with a better goal difference than Tunisia. South Africa need to beat Senegal and hope Angola lose to Tunisia. They then need to finish with a better goal difference than Angola.
Scouting report:
Senegal: Senegal will be playing under a new coach after the surprise resignation of Henri Kasperczak. Lamine Ndiaye will be taking over for the game.
The team drew 2-2 to Tunisia in the first game, but were then beaten 1-3 by Angola. Midfielder Pape Waigo Ndiate may be returning from injury.
South Africa: The Bafana Bafana drew with Angola 1-1 in the first game, then got soundly pounded by Tunisia 1-3 in the second. They’re looking to recover with a win over Senegal. The team may be without Steven Pienaar, (ankle) and defender Tsepo Masilela (hamstring.) Rowan Fernandez, the first choice goalkeeper, will probably be back in goal for the game.

Team Blogs: Magnusson is covering Senegal for our Senegal blog. He’s actually in Ghana and probably at the game, but word is that internet coverage is sketchy, so most of the reports may have to wait till he gets back. In the meantime, check out Andreas and Naeem on the South Africa blog.

The commentator on the other game is saying it was Diouf and keeper Sylva who were out partying. Sylva deserved to be dropped anyway though. Is Bouna Comoule Condoul (of Colorado Rapids) in goal for Senegal now?

Diouf is not playing? (I am at work and can’t watch)

Diouf is not playing, and Condoul is in goal. Aside from the goal he looks good.

Found the story:

Big decision from the new coach. And wasn’t El-Hadji Diouf supposed to be all grown up and responsible now???

I agree Daryl…Sylva looks old and past his prime as far as I’m concerned. And Senegal is doing their best to prove me right when I said a couple weeks ago that they are overrated and won’t do good in this tournament. I loved them on WC 2002 but they have been less than ordinary since then.
