Mohamed Aboutreika’s Africa Cup of Nations Winning Goal

Today’s Africa Cup of Nations Final was a well-contested game between two well-drilled teams, and in the end it all came down to one mistake. Poor old Rigobert Song has been a man mountain of a central defender all tournament, the rock on which Cameroon have built their counterattacks. The Cameroon captain made his first mistake in three weeks when he let that long ball bounce under his foot.

A mad dash for the ball between Song and Mohamed Zidan followed, and then a sort of wrestling match in the area with neither man having full possession. Zidan just about won and managed to poke the ball into the path of the onrushing (and criminally unmarked) Mohamed Aboutreika who beat Carlos Kameni by finding the corner. 1-0 to Egypt and that’s how it stayed.

A real shame. I supported Cameroon, unbelievable how a player can make a mistake like that at such a crucial time.

My congratulations to Egypt, 6 African Cups! My best wishes for World Cup 2010 to this surprising team!
