Kit vs Kit: Ghana vs Guinea

By: Daryl | January 19th, 2008 | 6 Comments »

Ghana jerseyThe host nation’s Africa Cup of Nations jersey was only recently revealed by Puma, and big thanks to Inara from the Ghana blog for spotting it. Manufacturers Puma have done the smart thing and moved their big cat from the center of the shirt (where it was a bit obtrusive) over to the side. Not sure how I feel about the cats on the shoulders though. Looks OK in the image, but we’ll see how it looks in action when the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off later.

The black trim around the collar and sleeves is definitely a nice addition though. Very classy, and brings to mind the German team of the ’70s that Beckenbauer captained. Also, though you can’t really tell from this image, the Ghanaian FA press release informs us that their crest on the left upper chest is actually in 3D (!)

Guinea jerseyI’d never heard of kit manufacturers Airness before seeing this Guinea kit, but if you visit the company’s website you’ll see a little video filling you in on Airness’s history. It was founded by former amateur boxer Malamine Koné, a Frenchman originally from Mali. He only founded the company in 1999, but is apparently having a good go at taking on the big manufacturers. And with this Guinea jersey it’s easy to see why.

I like the bold shade of red, but love the way the flag of Guinea is incorporated as a long stripe down the left hand side. It’s interrupted by the FA crest, but in a way that doesn’t ruin the three colour pattern. The extra bit of flag pattern on the right sleeve is also pretty sharp.

So there you have it, Kit vs Kit: Ghana vs Guinea. Which would you rather wear?

That video was interesting. It mentioned that Airness is now the main supplier for was it 6 or 7 African national clubs? Guinea and Mali being the 2 we are aware of…anyone know the others?

Airness sounds like a Jordan Brand offshoot, and anything which can possibly be associated with Jordan is as good as gold. (Except the Chicago White Sox…and the Wizards…and the Bobcats.) Guinea for the (kit) win.

Airness also has a few French clubs under contract, and they also did Fulham FC a few years ago. One of the interesting features of their LS shirts was thumb holes in the sleeves.

After watching the Ghana vs Guinea game today it seems guinea have ditched this kit for something not quite as exciting. Still Airness, but the long strip of flag pattern on one side has been replaced by a simple yellow strip on both sides. Still nice enough but nowhere near as good as the kit above.
