Angola 4-4 Mali: Is This The Greatest Comeback Ever?

A liitle tournament you might have heard of – The African Cup of Nations kicked off today (under a cloud, considering the last couple of days, understanably) and it couldn’t have got off to a more exciting start.

You’d usually think if you were 4-0 up with 15 minutes to go, that you’ve probably got the match won, right? Well Mali (a decent pick for Dark Horse at the tournament considering the talent they have in the side) fought back from 4 down, to finish 4-4, just to show that absolutely anything can happen, and it really is not over untill its over.

Mali’s goals were pretty scrappy, or the result of poor defending, but they probably aren’t going to be too worried. Its an incredible comeback, and it surely ranks up with the best of all time?

Wow, I really wish I could have seen this game live. Mali’s second goal was beautiful.

Incredible comeback. Surely after Mali’s 3rd goal Angola should have played a bit of keep ball, but as soon as they gave the possession away you just knew they were screwed. Lucky for them it didn’t last 1 minute more or they probably would have managed to lose!

I just hope Angola can recover psychologically from this and continue in the tournament. The hosts making it through the group is always good for the competition.

More collapse then comeback not to take anything away from the Malians. The first goal should never have happened as the goalie had an easy take but screwed it up magnificently. The second goal was pure class. The third and fourth were more a result of terrified defenders than anything else.

I agree with Aidan. If Angola don’t make it out of the group stage it will be bad for the tournaments as the crowds will not be there in the same way. Angola should still qualify though in my opinion as long as this doesn’t scar them. I think Flavio will be able to rally them. Class player.

In the 76th minute it was 4-0 and I turned to my husband and said, “Okay, this is over. I’m going to go do something else.”

    Stupidest. Decision. Ever.

    WOW!!

I told the people watching the game with me that Mali were capable of scoring 4 goals in 20 minutes and they laughed at the idea. They all left when mali scored the fourth!!!

When Mali scored the first, I just knew this would happen. And home advantage is not helping much since the fans are leaving the match before the final whistle.

Overall, probably one of the most frustrating matches I have ever watched!

‘Little tournament’. Are you talking of the African Cup of Nations? Really? In the year 2010? Dont make me laugh.

Angola looked tired in the end with all the running in the first half. But what a comeback. It must be the greatest ever in football I guess.

Gary and aaronarin, I believe he was being a bit facetious.

I guess sarcasm does not work well over the internet (or was that irony?)

WOW! It is as if the Angolan’s did not believe that they could win! 4-0, with 15 minutes to go? WOW!

Too bad, Angolan fans needed a boost, but hats off to Mali.

    Little tournament?

Did u really say all of mali’s goals were scrappy? Come on did u watch the match or excerpts? Admittedly the first goal was but did you see the rest? Especially kanoute’s?

How about Charlton v Huddersfield in the second division 1957-1958?
Charlton had a player injured after 20 minutes and since it was before substitutes were allowed, they played the rest of the game with 10 men.
Huddersfield took advantage and by the 70th minute were winning 1-5. Then Charlton decided it was time for the greatest comeback ever. Cue 7 goals in 20 minutes as Charlton won 7-6.

I’m soooo glad that I have free-to-air satellite here in USA to watch this match! RTS1 of Sénégal did a superb job of covering opening ceremonies. Great commentary in Français and good quality transmission. I watched with a group of guys on a 100 inch projection screen. It was a great Sunday! Mali made me proud now that they have 1 group point. They will advance along with World Cup finalist… Algeria. I luv the game!

yeah definately one of the greatest comebacks ever, if not THE greatest!

  • http://ivorycoast.worldcupblog.org Elliott

This is definitely up there, if only because scoring 4 goals against any opposition in any competition is impressive. Granted, Angola is no world beater, but they were the home side and had a huge lead.

Also, I’ve decided I need a Mali jersey. Mali always has the best jerseys.

  • arsvenal
