Ghana 2-1 Guinea: Muntari’s Stunning Winner

Here’s how Sulley Muntari won the opening game of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations for Ghana. It was the 89th minute and the hosts looked to be heading for a for frustrating 1-1 draw after more or less dominating the Group A game. But then Muntari let rip with his left foot and the Accra crowd had reason to celebrate. Video of the two earlier goals after the jump.

[seems the powers that be don’t want football fans watching Africa Cup of Nations highlights. We’ve replaced the video above, but if they get to that one too then try clicking here.

I think a draw would have been a disaster for Ghana. Good they got a last minute winner and its three points on the board for them.

Tristan, just checked and it’s playing fine on the site. But you could try going direct to the Daily Motion site instead. The links are:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x443es_ghana-guinee-10-a-gyan_sport
for Gyan’s penalty 1-0

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x443mu_ghana-guinee-11-kalabane_sport
for Kalabane’s equalizer 1-1

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x443vr_ghana-guinee-21-muntari_sport
for the Muntari goal 2-1

You could also try 101GreatGoals, who have different links (via the d1g website) available here:

A deflection isn’t an own goal. It’s Kalabane’s goal. And Ghana ain’t ghana win!

But wasn’t Kalabane’s header technically off target if it hit the bar first?

That’s why I think it might be an own goal, but I’m prepared to be wrong.

No problem Tristan. Can you tell me which of those links worked for you? Just in case anyone else has the same problem so I’ll know where to send them.

My thought is that it won’t be an own goal but I could be wrong. For instance, if a shot from 20 yards slams the post then bounces off the keepers back and then dribbles in that is not considered an own goal, is it? Highly unfortunate yes, but I don’t think an own goal…Like I said though I could be wrong.

So far I’ve seen The Guardian list it as a Kingson own goal and the BBC list it as Kalabane’s goal. So I’m officially confused. I think most people will agree that Kalabane deserves the goal so let’s hope it gets awarded to him.
