Egypt vs Sudan - OpenThread

By: Daryl | January 26th, 2008 | 16 Comments »

Egypt started with a bang in Africa Cup of Nations Group C, beating Cameroon 4-2. Sudan started with a whimper, losing 3-0 to Zambia. Another defeat for the Desert Hawks and it’s curtains.

Mo Zidan blows kisses

Egypt 3-0 Sudan

Hosny (pen) 29′
Aboutreika 75′, 81′

Group C
Date: January 26
Kick-off time: 1930 GMT
Venue: Baba Yari Stadium, Kumasi

FULL-TIME It’s all over. 3-0 to Egypt. Decent effort by Sudan but Egypt’s class shows. Mohamed Aboutreika emerged from the bench to make sure for The Pharaohs and Egypt now sit on top of Group C with six points. Sudan are bottom with zero points.

83′ GOAL! Aboutreika again. He ran down the left hand side of the box, shaped as if to cross but then cheekily tucked it inside the near post. Doesn’t lift his shirt to celebrate this time as he got a yellow for it the first time.

81′ Sudan bring in big Faisil Agab.

77′ GOAL! Aboutreika scores for Egypt after some patient build up. Aboutreika had played Zaki through, buts after failing to get a shot away Zaki squared it back to Aboutreika to finish. Two nil. Now if I’m a Sudan fan I’m thinking this is no longer possible.

73′ On the other hand, if I’m a Sudan fan I’m thinking this is still possible.

69′ If I’m an Egypt fan, I’m starting to worry about the lack of a cushion here.

- looks like Hassan replaced Fathalla.

56′ Ahmed Hassan is also coming on and will play on the right. Not sure who he’s replacing but I’m glad to see him anyway.

55′ Egypt decide not to risk Zidan any further and switch him for Mohamed Aboutreika. Replay shows Zidan’s shoulder injury was caused by a Sudan defender stepping on him after he fell. Looked pretty nasty and not altogether gentlemanly.

54′ Zidan gets away and shoots hard but Elmuiz Abdalla gets down well to save. Zidan is clutching his shoulder in pain.

45′ And so the second half begins.

HALF-TIME Egypt lead 1-0 with a Hosny penalty. He score it twice but they only get one. Not the best game of football I’ve ever seen and Egypt not as impressive as expected. I’m hoping they finally unveil Ahmed Hassan for the second half.

Here’s a sneak peak of what the guy can do…

36′ Alaa Eldin Yousif hits a swervy rocket with the outside of his right boot from what looks like about 40 yards out. Only just over. THAT would have been the goal of the tournament. But it’s just a goal-kick instead.

29′ GOAL! Hosny scores the retake by putting it low to the other side. That’s the second time he’s retaken and re-scored a pen in two games.

28′ He scores… but has to retake it. Not sure why. Anyone?

-Hosny to take the pen. This would make him joint top scorer with Alloudi and Eto’o.

27′ PENALTY! Hosny brought down by Elmuiz Abdalla. Yellow for the keeper.

24′ Mohamed Ali (not that one) gets a yellow. Sudan matching Egypt so far.

12′ Egypt forced to clear off the line. This isn’t the Egyptian rout we were expecting so far is it?

10′ Zidan was away but got the ball caught under his feet. D’oh!

6′ Egypt appealing for a penalty after the ball Lado appeared to control the ball with his arm. Not given though. Replays show that it probably should have been given. Unless there’s been some drastic rule change that no-one told me about.

-Have found the line ups and stolen copied and pasted them below:

EGYPT: El Hadari, Fathallah, Hany Said, Fathi, Moawad, Gomaa, Abd Rabou, Shawky, Zidan, Moteab, Zaki

SUDAN: Elmuiz Abdalla, El Tayeb, Ali Elkhidir, Eldin Ahmed Gibril, Kuku, Yousif Hado, Lado, Karar, Bader Eldin Abdalla, Kamal Tambal, Babiker

0′ And we’re off.

-Faisal Agab has been left out of the Sudan team. Egypt have Hassan available, but he’s on the bench.

Preview

Scout Report - Egypt

The Pharaohs looked magnificent while crushing Cameroon. Strike Mohamed Zidan made an instant name for himself, while defensive mid Hosny also impressed with two goals. Mohamed Aboutreika made a late entance to the Cameroon game and looked classy, while captain and star of the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations victory Ahmed Hassan is back after being suspended for the opening game.

Scout Report - Sudan

The Desert Hawks weren’t horrible in the 3-0 loss to Zambia, but they still lost 3-0. A defeat here means not only booking a flight home, but facing Cameroon in the final game with nothing to play for. Suand will need ancient but influential Faisal Agab to justify Mohamed Abdallah’s u-turn in eventually selecting him. [update: Abdallah has u-turned again and left Agab on the bench.]

With the way Cameroon is killing Zambia, Cameroon and Egypt certainly look like the ones coming out of the group. I’ll be shocked if Sudan can pull anything off, but I like being shocked as a neutral, so let’s see a good match.

I wondered the same Bman. I guess the Egyptian league pays pretty well though, so it’s not as if he has to leave just to earn some money.

man i can’t believe we only scored 3. Abu treka should have been in the game since the start. Oh by the way Abu Treka is probably the only egyptian player that is loved by all the fans from all the teams. and he is the highest paid player in egypt. plus he is 28 years old so he is not really looking for anything more. he got all what he needs.

anyway, the game wasn’t as i expected at all I thought we would have won 10-1, but its okay. I think the egyptian players were scared from the Sudanese violence they pretty much were fighting not playing soccer. and the Referee was almost their 12th player! he let them break our players and ignore it as if it was nothing and of course as every one saw he let 2 penalties go.
