Where: Baba Yara Sports Stadium Ground, Kumasi
That’s the game. Egypt will face Cote d’Ivoire in the semis. Angola gets to go home with heads held high, looking forward to 2010.
90 + 4 Game over. Egypt is lucky that Angola didn’t manage to get the equalizer. They threatened mightily in the last few minutes, but just couldn’t get it past the Egyptian defenders.
90 + 2 Fathy commits a foul just outside the box. Even he stops playing, but the ref didn’t see it and Egypt takes the ball back down the field, where there is nobody to do anything.
90 + 1 Four minutes of stoppage time. Aboutreika out, Said in for Egypt. Angola delivers several dangerous passes and even a couple of shots, but somehow Egypt survives.
90′ Egypt are all back to defend, which means a lot of the play is in their final third. Angola is giving them some tense moments.
88′ Angola delivers a dangerous-looking corner that Egypt eventually clears.
86′ Hassan takes a Gomaa pass and delivers a strong shot, which Lama is lucky to save.
85′ Edson in, Flavio out for Angola
79′ Angola puts together a lovely string of possession in the midfield, but in the end a cross goes out for an Egyptian throw-in.
78′ Despite being up a goal, Egypt is still playing a strongly attacking game. They continue to look threatening, but Angola’s defense is mostly up to it.
74′ Fathy comes up the right side but has nobody to pass to. He takes the shot himself and a startled Lama has to make the save.
73′ Flavio is booked for a high kick to Shawky’s face. Flavio seems shocked by the call.
72′ Mateus on, Ze Kalanga going off for Angola.
71′ Zaky goes off, Hassan comes on.
69′ Zaky is carried off the field with cramps.
68′ Aboutreika and Moteab move up the field beautifully, but Moteab’s strike is saved by Lama.
66′ Fathallah in for Moawad for Egypt. Fathallah is normally a central defender, so this may be a formation switch.
63′ Aboutreika to Zaky, who backheels it to Moteab. Moteab gets off a nice strike, but Lama saves it. Lama stays down with some kind of leg injury. He gets up after application of magic spray, but he’s limping and wincing.
61′ Great interplay between Flavio and Manucho at the top of the box. Manucho takes the shot, which El-Hadary does well to save.
59′ Angola finally gets another opportunity, getting the ball to Ze Kalanga who takes a long shot, but it goes high.
56′ Airosa takes down Zaky just outside the box. Hosny sends the free kick toward goal, but it goes over the bar.
50′ Al-Hadary sends a goal kick nearly into the Angola box. Lama has to punch it high.
49′ Egypt has an opportunity in front of the goal, but in the end Angola defends well and Hosny shoots wide.
Egypt has 292 passes vs 174 passes for Angola.
48′ Aboutreika gets a yellow for diving just outside the box. Nice try, though. Angola is looking more threatening this half so far.
46′ Manucho goes over the top of the keeper, but alas, shoots wide of an open goal.
46′ We’re off again. Mendonca is in, Maurito is out for Angola.
45+ 3 That’s the half. Egypt is dominating possession, but Angola is putting up a strong fight. This game is far from over.
45 + 2′ Another lovely string of possession for Angola, but Ze Kalanga shoots it into the stands.
45′ Two minutes of stoppage time
44′ Maurito sends a long distance shot just wide for Angola.
43′ Angola puts together a pretty string of connected passes, but in the end Maurito sends it to the keeper.
41′ Moteab sends a shot high.
38′ GOAL!! Egypt. Fathy delivers a cross right directly in front of the goal, and Zaky knocks it in with his belly. No joke.
36′ Gilberto takes the free kick. It goes into the wall, but the rebound is almost headed in by Ze Kalanga. Egypt responds immediately with a strong counter-attack, but in the end Angola is able to clear the ball.
35′ Gomaa gets booked for knocking Flavio’s legs out from under him just outside the box.
33′ Flavio takes studs to the kneecap and needs to be carried off the field. Not good for Angola. He limps on the sidelines but comes back in.
32′ Shawky delivers a dangerous cross, but there’s nobody to get on the end of it.
30′ Did he just say the teams have scored 80 goals in the tournament so far? Amazing.
29′ Another dangerous free kick awarded to Angola. I was busy typing and didn’t see the foul, but the announcer says it was questionable. The free kick is low and goes straight into the feet of the wall.
26′ GOAL!!! Angola. Manucho equalizes with an unexpected high, long-distance strike that El-Hadary didn’t even see coming.
25′ Flavio is taken down a couple of yards outside the box with what looks like a legit challenge. The ref awards the free kick, which goes straight to a leaping Hosny in the wall.
22′GOAL!!! Hosny scores for Egypt from the spot.
20′ Aboutreika goes down easily just outside the box. Free kick from a dangerous position goes into the wall, but the ref gives a penalty for handball! Pushing ensues. Yellow to Andre.
18′ Fathy puts in a great cross for Moteab in front of the goal, but he’s beaten by Angolan defenders.
17′ The ball moves end to end several times, with both teams going on the attack whenever possible and neither able to capitalize. Egypt is looking more threatening.
14′ Lama grabs the ball on the ground. Looks like he’s out of the box, but there’s no call.
13′ Ze Kalanga goes down after an elbow to the chest. Egypt is dominating possession 64-36%
11′ Moteab gets a great chance, beating the keeper, but the ball goes across the face of the goal and nobody is there to tap it in.
9′ Sayed Moawad gets booked for tripping Ze Kalanga. The free kick goes over the goal.
8′ Shawky gets a shot off, but it goes straight to Lama.
7′ Egypt takes a free kick from the left side, but it goes to an Angolan head. Egypt retakes posession quickly but doesn’t really threaten.
5′ The game is moving back and forth quickly. Looks like a fast, rough game. Egypt is playing European-style football, very possession-oriented with short, on-the-ground passing.
1′ We’re off
-2′ As expected, Flavio and Manucho are playing up front for Angola.
-3′ Zidan is in the stands? What’s the deal here?
Starting lineups:
Angola: Lama; Airosa, Kali, Yamba Asha, Rui Marques; Ze Kalanga, Andre, Gilberto, Maurito; Flavio Amado, Manucho
Egypt: Al Hadari; Mohamed, Said, Gomaa, Moawad; Abd Rabou, Fathi, Shawky; Zaki, Aboutrika, Moteab
-5′ National anthems are playing, and the stadium is 3/4 empty.
-8′ No place for Zidan in the starting lineup, and Egypt may be moving from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 to contain Angola.
The powerful Pharaohs of Egypt meet the gutsy Palancas Negras (Black Antelopes) of Angola. Egypt finished at the top of Group C with two wins and a draw. Angola finished a surprise second in Group D, unexpectedly beating out Senegal. Egypt outscored opponents in the group stages by 8-3. Angola by 4-2. In a pre-tournament friendly, the two teams battled to a 3-3 draw.

Scouting Report
Egypt: The Pharaohs started out with a beautiful win 4-2 against Cameroon. Most of the teams in the first round were struggling to find a cohesive style as they connected players from multiple leagues across the world. The Egyptians, many of whom played for the same Egyptian teams, Al-Ahly and Al-Zamalek, already had that cohesive style. This gave them a huge advantage in the opening games. The Cameroon win was followed by a 3-0 win over Sudan, but in the final game they managed only a 1-1 draw with Zambia. They’ll need a higher degree of focus in this game to take out Angola.
Egypt should have a full-strength squad. Forward Mohamed Zidan, who was fantastic in the first game, is expected to start.
Angola: Show of hands from everybody who thought Angola would advance to the quarterfinals and Senegal wouldn’t? Not many, are there? The Palancas Negras proved here that making the 2006 World Cup in 2006 was not a fluke, despite the fact that they had never advanced beyond the ACN group stages before this tournament.
In this game, Angola will be working to take advantage of the fact that two of their players, Gilberto and Flavio, play at Al-Ahly with a number of the Egyptian players. Coach Luís Oliveira Gonçalves will be pushing his side to maintain the discipline and teamwork they showed in the group stages.
Captain Paulo Figueredo will be returning from injury.

Egypt’s been getting a good beating in each match starting from the Sudan match

Does anybody know why Zidan wasn’t even on the bench? If it wasn’t an injury or discipline thing, it seems like an odd choice.

YES, we did it Alhamdu Lellah. We really deserved the win, Angola did great but we deserve it and probably we should have gotten a wider lead.

Good match! It would have been interesting if manucho scored when he got the chance in the 46 minute.
I was expecting a high scoring match like the 3-3 draw a couple of weeks ago, but this match was still good.
Well done to Egypt!

I am not understanding how the teams in this competition qualify for 2010. For instance Angola – are they now qualified to play? Call me stupid, but this is not clear to me. Thanks if anyone can straighten this out for me.

Sooz, do you mean qualified for World Cup 2010 or for Africa Cup of Nations 2010?
Both have separate qualifying groups that teams have to get through to get to the tournament. But Angola are hosting Africa Cup of Nations 2010 and so qualify automatically.
great egypt….we are through!!…nice match by angola …sorry kiko..lol
Daryl: I mean World Cup 2010. But I get that now about Angola and ACN 2010. Thanks.

I so much wanted to comment on this game, however my mobile was playing games with me.
First of all well done to the palancas negras, you have made me extremely proud to be associated with this greater nation on the rise; Now that we have produced our bit, my hope is that some of these agents will flock to Angola and see that there are many more Manuchos and Flavios, talking about him I think he deserves better than His current team and that is no disrepect to Al Ahly, Airosa you are a beauty of a thing certainly you can do better than portuguese 2nd/3rd division and the as for the rest well I will have to write a whole blog to express how I feel.
As for the game itself, I think it had its momemts though I think the referee had a major hand in the final outcome of the game. The free kick preceding the penalty it simply wasnt a free kick and most 50/50 decisions were all given Egypt’s ways. However well done to the Pharaos
