CAN QuarterFinal Liveblog: Angola vs. Ghana

jabulaniThe group stages in the African Cup of Nations are finished, and now it’s time for the knockouts. We’re going to liveblogging all of the remaining matches here at World Cup Blog, so be sure to stop by and keep us company.

I’ll be handling Angola vs. Ghana right now, and later Rob will be covering Cote d’Ivoire vs Algeria (8:30pm Angola time, 8:30 pm CET, 7:30pm UK, 2:30 Eastern US, 1:30 Central US, 11:30am, Pacific US.)

The big question for this match: Will a Ghana without the injured Michael Essien be able to overcome the home advantage that propelled the Angolan team to top of group A in the group stage?

Interesting news of the weekend: Ghana is claiming “disgraceful intimidatory tactics” on the part of Angolan security. More on this at our Ghana blog. (Remember in the group stages, when Angola’s fellow group A teams Malawi and Mali had “scheduling difficulties” that left them unable to get training time before matches? But I’m sure this is all coincidence.)

Fun pre-match reading:

This is goalkeeper Carlos Fernandes’ second trip to Angola. His team? Angola.

Michael Essien: Villain or Victim? (I think “failing to jubilate” is my newest favorite accusation. “Darling, you failed to jubilate over the spaghetti. It’s over.”)

Thank you for confirming that this site is still shite.

  • Drabik

Wren – whats all that about?

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

Drabik, thanks for the support. I’ll cheerfully admit that this was NOT the best liveblog. Or even my own best. All I can say is that I had a 45-second lag between audio and video and a feed that froze every two minutes, which makes it hard to follow the action. Apologies. Next time will be better.

We’ve learned, though, that it’s best to ignore these kinds of people. Either they’re dealing with their own personal issues (this could be someone upset that I mentioned the Ghana complaints about Angola security) or they come to us via a site like NewsNow that’s often trolled by chronic malcontents looking for a fight.

The best part of this site is that we get a lot of regular readers/commenters who are fantastic, which makes it easy to not pay attention to the others. :-)

    At least it rhymed?

Laurie, have you seen my preview of the Angola game? These beatings are things that happened. There are TOO MANY witnesses for me to claim otherwise and i know both assaulted people personally. There are pix that we’ve been told not to publish cos the guys feel it aint important now. Anyway, our team – which is officially the youngest team ever to be fielded by Ghana to any CAN – has done the job. And in some style so i’ll just let all the insinuations in your post slide. Dont wanna go into a fact-correcting mission, i’m too happy for that. Cheerio!

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

Gary apologies — that should have been the first place I looked for a preview, but it was very early this morning. I’ll go in and add a link right now after the fact.

  • http://angola.worldcupblog.org/ Kiko

I encourage you to publish the pics Gary.

“the guys feel it aint important now”- They were beaten and they think its not important??

I think it is very important. Not publishing it will raise question marks over the veracity of the claims.

With all kinds of stories flying around, what people really want is the truth.

Afterall, if the claims are true, wrongdoing has to be punished in some way

  • Drabik

    Don’t worry about it laurie.

Many people would have given up on commentary in your situation. Ignore the critics, you did the best you could really!

  • http://ghana.worldcupblog.com Gary

Kiko the guys who were beaten have asked that it be not published for ‘the greater good’, quote unquote. And to Laurie, thanks for the heads up.

African Cup of Nations Quarter Finals Angola vs Ghana The animosity and ill-feeling between these two teams in the buildup to the game ensures that this should be an intriguing contest.

  • Gary

Buy dsi r4 seems you are 24 hours late! Game ended already. Anyway you can be early for the review and the video here:
