Blogging the African Cup of Nations

By: Daryl | December 7th, 2007 | 8 Comments »

Ghana 2008 logoThe African Cup of Nations is coming soon (January 20th to February 10th 2008, in Ghana) and World Cup Blog is excited. Plenty of big name players will be competing for the trophy and we want to give the tournament the attention it deserves. To do this we need bloggers to captain the national team blogs of the countries involved. Here’s a quick list of the qualified nations:

Ghana, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Nigeria, Sudan, Cameroon, Angola, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Namibia, Zambia, Morocco, Tunisia, Benin, South Africa

If you’re interested in blogging about one of these teams for ACN 2008 and beyond, then shoot an email to daryl [at] worldcupblog.org and let us know 1) which team you’re interested in and 2) why you’d be excellent.

Not sure where to post the following question, so I am doing it here (forgive if inappropriate):

Do we know if Setanta will be broadcasting ANC games?

It hasn’t been announced anywhere yet, as far as I’m aware. But will keep looking and will let everyone know as soon as there’s news.

Just read that BBC will be broadcasting, so I think Sky and/or Setanta will be up there as well. Hopefully, anyway.

i don’t understand why they host ANC in January. we know that most of african players play in Europe. In January, the leagues in European nations reach it’s peak. i feel sorry for European clubs that have so many african players on their team. it’s a gonna be a big miss for them.

Sooz,

Doesn’t look like Setanta will be showing the tournament. Here’s the latest information I’ve managed to piece together for viewing the African Cup of Nations in the UK and North America…

In the UK: Live on BBCi. If you have Sky or freeview in the UK the BBC will be showing the ACN on their digital interactive channel.

Many of the games will also be shown on the British Eurosport channel (and Eurosport Germany.)

In the USA and Canada: It currently looks like the only network broadcasting the ACN is the French language 3Atelesud. I’ve done a bit of research, and it’s only available in North America as an international channel on Dish Network, at a cost of $15 per month. It also requires the installation of an extra satelite dish, though Tony from Dish customer service assures me there’s no extra charge for the installation of the second dish.

Alternatively, there’s still a chance that 3Atelesud will be broadcasting the ACN live online for a small fee. I spoke to a nice lady in their US/Canada office today who told me that a decision will be made over the weekend and that if I called back on Monday she would have a definite answer for me.

So I’ll call back on Monday and then let you know what’s happening there.

Sooz,

Seems TELESUD will now definitely be showing the African Cup of Nations online in the US and Canada. Some details here, but more to follow.
