Angola vs Senegal - OpenThread
Africa Cup of Nations Group D is still wide open after all four sides took a point from the first set of games. Most will fancy Senegal to win this, but it’s all to play for.
Angola 3-1 Senegal
Manucho 48′, 67′ - Faye 20′
Flavio 77′
Group D
Date: January 27
Kick-off: 1700 GMT
Venue: Tamale Stadium, Tamale
FULL-TIME Did anyonre predict 3-1 to Angola? Huge upset here with two goals from Manucho and another for the awesome little Flavio. Angola make Group D very very interesting and make Senegal very very worried.
90+ Ze Kalanga knocked down by Sall again. He’s going to be covered in bruises tomorrow.
90′ Four minutes of stoppage time to be played. Angola heading for a famous win. They’ve never made it out of the group stage and this would get them halfway there.
87′ Manucho off, Loko (with the silly hair from the World Cup, remember?) comes on.
78′ GOAL!!! 3-1 Angola. Flavio, little tiny Flavio, meets a cross with a perfect header.
75′ Manucho is still waiting on a work permit for his Man Utd move. Let’s hope someone from the British Home Office is watching this game…
72′ Angola bring off Maurito for Carvalho. They need to hand on for 20 minutes.
69′ Henri Camara comes in for Diomansy Kamara. Senegal need a goal.
-Sylva got a limp-wristed punch on a Gilberto corner, the ball dropped in the area, Senegal’s defenders were too panciked to clear and Manucho poked home. 2-1 to Angola.
67′ GOAL!!!!! Manucho again!
64′ Great skills by Maurito to go past Kamara. A stepover and one foot behind the other and he was away. Then he let go a thunderbolt, which Sylva did well to tip over. Great stuff.
62′ Mendy off and Guaye on for Senegal. Are we headed for another 1-1? Group D could get extremely complicated.
50′ Sall with a horror tackle on Ze Kalanga, like fying kick to the ankles. Ze Kalanga clearly paying for daring to provide Manucho with the equalizing goal.
48′ GOAL!!! Manucho powers a header into the far corner. Two games, two goals, two headers for the new Man Utd player. 1-1. Ze Kalanga with the cross
46′ Lama is back for the second half. What a trooper.
45′ We have second half.
HALF-TIME 1-0 at the break.
43′ Lama limping but takes a big goal kick. Angola will probably decide whether to keep him on or not during half-time.
41′ Lama takes a kick from his own player as they both scramble to deal with a low Senegal cross. Sub keeper warming up already.
39′ Ze Kalanga back and looking OK.
38′ Ze Kalanga stretchered off the pitch with quite a lot of blood coming out of him. Hope he’s OK. Didn’t see what happened to him but it can’t be good.
30′ Questionable yellow card for Flavio. The Senegal players all seem to be twice the size of the Angola players (Manucho aside.) It looks a bit like a lads againts dads match. Maybe Angola should be allowed to foul, to even things up a bit.
22′ So much for my 1-0 to Angola prediction.
20′ GOAL! Abdoulaye Faye shows Diouf how it should be done. His other central defender Diawara heads it across goal and Faye heads home at the far post. 1-0.
19′ El-Hadji Diouf was completely free at the far post, but heeaded it straight up in the air. Where I grew up we called that a “50 pence head.”
12′ Senegal keeper Tony Sylva has been asked to change his jersey. Apparently he looked a bit too similar to the outfield players so now he’s switched to dark blue. After the Tunisia game it was suggested Senegal should change their keeper altogether so he can’t complain too much.
10′ Angola looking good and Ze Kalanga looking quick, very very quick.
5′ El-Hadji Diouf bends one from outside the box with his left foot. He misses but it swerved dangerously. He means business today.
0′ We have kick-off.
Lineups:
Angola: 1-Lama; 2-Marco Airosa, 5-Kali, 6-Yamba Asha; 15-Rui Marques, 17-Ze Kalanga, 8-Andre, 10-Maurito, 11-Gilberto; 16-Flavio, 23-Manucho
Senegal: 1-Tony Sylva; 21-Habib Beye, 5-Souleymane Diawara, 20-Abdoulaye Faye, 3-Guirane Ndaw; 12-Moustapha Bayal Sall, 18-Frederic Mendy, 19-Papa Bouba Diop, 15-Diomansy Kamara; 11-El Hadji Diouf, 8-Mamadou Niang
-The team introductions have been done away with, because they take too long. So looks like we’ll be kicking off on time today.
Preview
Scout Report - Angola
Were arguably a little fortunate to get a point out of South Africa, but did score a nice goal through Manucho’s diving header. Bad news is that Figueiredo is injured, so word from the Angola blog is that Ze Kalanga will be replacing him. Coach Luis Oliveria Goncalves isn’t happy that the Black Antelopes are being written off, arguing that the Flavio-Manucho pairing has the potential to be the best on the continent. We’ll see.
Scout Report - Senegal
Conceded early to Tunisia in the opener, and then wasted more than a few chances to pull it back. Mamadou Niang should have put away at least one of the opportunities that came his way. Senegal eventually scored twice, but then threw it all away by conceding Traoui’s long range goal. Keeper Tony Sylva took a lot of the blame, but the defending could have been better too.

Let’s get the predictions going…I say 2-0 for Senegal.

I’m going to go against the odds and predict a 1-0 win for Angola. This tournament needs a good upset.

I’ll go with Daryl (but make it 2-1, now that Senegal have scored, obviously). But then, I’m both a romantic and an Angola fan.

I agree about the upset thing, but it ain’t gonna be 1-0 Angola. ![]()

Woohoo Angola! Looks like 1-1 could be a possibility.
Does anybody know if Massaer is in Ghana?

I say we should all be pulling for the first ever group that has every single game end in a draw…how in the world would they figure out who advances? I guess whoever scored the most goals. Or maybe on style points? ![]()

Another Angola goal. Looks like ManU will be getting their money’s worth.

Tony Sylva is looking pretty poor so far…isn’t he getting kind of old?

btw, we’ll know for sure after the second game today, but don’t you agree that this is the real group of death?

A couple things about Manucho, this is my first real exposure to him…
1) Reminds me a lot of my boy Adebayor…tall, lanky, great in the air, cleaning up the scrambles
2) How is he going to find a spot in the Man U. lineup behind rooney, Tevez, and Saha?Although I admit saha has looked prety ordinary and rooney is often injured.

I agree Brad. Group of Death usually means all four teams are dangerous. But Group B is really just three good teams plus Benin making up the numbers.

Fergie says that Manucho will give him something different, by which I guess he means height. But I’m worried Manucho will just be a player they bring on in the last ten minutes, which will get frustrating for him.

Brad, I was wondering the same thing about where Manucho will fit in at ManU. It makes me sick when rich teams stack the deck with quality players who will waste away on the bench.

Yeah, I know what you mean Daryl, but it was the same with Adebayor at the beginning but he kept getting better until they realized they didn’t need Thierry Henry anymore and now look where he is…in the top of league goal-scoring.

Unlike Adebeyor who is supremely skilled with the ball at his feet, What we have seen with Manucho is that he is skilled wit his head, it has yet to be seen what he can do witht he ball at his feet really.

yo i dont know if i remember his name correctly but muluenga on Angola had a ridiculous bit of skill followed by a vicious shot that if it went in would have easily been goal of the tournament so far in my opinion. that move just left me in awe.

And Yea Massaer is in fact in Ghana. I feel for the kid. He called me after the Tunisia Senegal game and I told him Senegal should have won that match and he appreciated my honesty. He’s not getting much internet time though so thats why the Senegal blog isn’t really up to date.

I was sorry to have missed this game. Ever since the WC, I’ve had a soft spot for Angola. Glad to see them do well.
Massaer is so lucky. I’d love to be in Ghana right now.

Good point Bman…time will tell about Manucho. There are similarities between the two but by far not equals yet.
